Tonight an expirement, maybe...

Wayne Dillon

Good morning all,
Several weeks ago I got to put up a 128' wahr, East West, at an average of 20' AGL. The upside is its a 128' wahr which terminates at the front deck, the down side is its a 128' wahr that terminates at the front deck! Well last evening it was warm enough to go outside with my coffee and begin to play with this beast. I originally planned to use it on 80m but wanted to know if it would go on 40 as well.
So here we are, on the front deck, FT817, ZM-2 ASTU and a counterpoise for 80 and another for 40, joined at the ASTU feedpoint. I gotta tell ya, tuning this monster is a bit ticklish but with care I got it resonant on 3.564, about a 1.2:1 VSWR. This was now about 18:15 local (00:15z) so I checked the frequency and threw out a couple of "QRL?", nothing heard. So I proceeded to call "CQ".
One of the best tools out there to see how well any antenna is radiating is the Reverse Beacon Network, http://www.reversebeacon.net/ if you've not used it yet do give it a try, its really an eye opener to how your set-up is performing.
Well I got no takers on my CQs but the RBN skimmers reported me in OH (784.1 mi), WV (927.4 mi), WI (479.4 mi), and UT (1024.6 mi). remember 4.5 watts from my front deck. I then went on up to 40 (7.122, what other frequency is there???) also at about 1.2:1 VSWR and repeated the process. RBN skimmers reported me in OH (664 mi), and VA (942.9 mi) when N4API popped up and answered my CQ. That's Brian in GA (703 mi) who rewarded my efforts with a 559. For 4.5 watts into what is really a marginal antenna i'll take it.
So, this evening I will be on the front deck, this time with my KX3 into the ZM-2 et al. to call the nets on 40. I'll be really interested to get real RST reports to see how this beastie performs over various paths. Who knows, I may even make it into Terry's 80m net!

January SSS Results - finally

John Lonigro

Sorry for the delay. I was in Michigan the last couple of weeks, tending to my son who had shoulder surgery. He seems to be recovering nicely, but has a long road ahead before it's almost as good as new.

Hopefully my summary of the January results didn't indicate any errors or omissions because I don't plan to revisit this again until February. The enclosure is the latest and greatest, including this month's soapbox comments. I remembered to save the file as a Windows file instead of Unix, in hopes that everyone will be able to read it and the columns will be straight. Let me know if there are any problems.

John AA0VE
