Terry, for the computer hash coming out of the USB port, you can try shielded USB cables.  Amazon's got some for pretty cheap - but a lot also depends on what you're hooking them up to.  I've got USB cables going to my signalink and my winkeyer, so I've got a couple of em on order from Amazon.

I need to go on a noise hunt here at home myself.  Would really like to figure out why I have an S7-9 noise level all across 80&40 meters - oh the joys of living in an urban environment!

Tonight's 40m nets

Wayne Dillon

Good evening all, the early net was much better than I had hoped for when I checked the solar numbers earlier in the day. The signals weren't huge but for once the noise level here on 40 was reasonably low (S5-7) so I was able to pull a couple of stations out, always a pleasure.
The late net, only Chas made it through but at about 02:45 there was one but I just couldn't make it out - sorry.

Re: SSB...trying

Jeremy Utley

For the sideband net, you're probably going to want NVIS - Dipole or Inverted-V can be NVIS - it depends on the height.  For 40m, if you keep it under about 15-20 feet, you should be doing NVIS just fine.

Honestly, Monday nights are starting to get difficult for me lately.  The XYL has started dog training classes on Mon nights, and I've also been working some longer hours lately doing security patches on servers at work.

Michael, why don't we try to hook up some evening and see if you can even get here, and get above my noise level at all.  Right now I've got a pretty constant S7-S9 noise level on 40m day or night.  If you got a better noise floor, maybe you should even act as net control for the sideband net - it's easy to do, I could help if you'd be willing - you might actually have better luck than I do!

Fw: SSS this coming Sunday

John Lonigro <johnlon@...>

This coming Sunday is the 2nd Sunday of the month, which means it's time

for the "SECOND SUNDAY SPRINT".  It's early in the season.  You can
still catch up with the leaders and get into the thick of the
competition for use of the coveted WQ5RP callsign for the 4x4 sprint in
October.

Here are the details, which should be familiar to all by now:

Date/time: Sunday, 8 Feb, 2015, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm CST (0100 - 0300Z
Monday).
Bands: 160M through 10M, no WARC bands or 60M.
Frequencies: The usual QRP watering holes - don't forget 7122 kHz and
3564 kHz.
Power: 5 Watts maximum.
Mode: CW or sideband (no sideband on 7122 or 3564 of course).
Exchange: RST, SPC, and member number (members) or RST, SPC, power
(non-members).
Calling CQ: "CQ 4S" recommended.

Note: Contacts with the same station on different bands are allowed. The
sideband and CW portions of a band count as the same band (change from
last year, to better align with the 4x4 contest rules).

Reporting:
Add up your QSOs for each band/mode and send them to me.

With that in mind, a typical report would be:

Name: Sparky
Call: K9MUT
QTH: Branson, MO
4SQRP number: 5280
Results:
40M: 3 QSOs
80M: 6 QSOs
Total: 9 QSOs

You do not need to list the stations contacted or mode. But if you make
an exotic contact, you might as well brag about it in an optional
bragging section at the bottom of your submittal. I'll include comments
when I report the scores (no extra credit).

When you've totaled your score, please send it to:
secondsundaysprint@.... Put "Sprint" in the subject line. Send the
results by Monday evening. I'll tally everything and publish them on
this reflector as soon as possible. I suggest you send them in shortly
after 9:00 pm Sunday so you don't forget. If you see a mistake or
omission when I publish the results, let me know and I'll fix it.

Keep this email until after you've submitted your score for Sunday.
Remember, the person with the most SSS contacts between November, 2014
and September, 2015 will be allowed to use the club's callsign, WQ5RP,
for the 4X4 sprint in October, 2015.

The SSS rules are posted on the 4SQRP website, under "4SQRP On Air
Activities", just in case you delete this email.

72 and good luck in the contest,

John AA0VE
SSS Coordinator
