I meant to include this in my previous post, sorry.

KD1JV already designed a 160M Ft. Tuthill kit for Mr. Hendricks.  However, with the sale of the business, I just don't know if it will still be available when it re-opens.  KD1JV also designed a 160/80M dual band rig for qrpkits.com.  James and Kathy are supposed to re-open in a few days so I am crossing my fingers it isn't delayed and neither kit is retired.

I'll check and see what I have in storage.  I know I've got several piezo elements as well as a junk telephone or two in my junk box.

If anyone has a junker telephone (or know of anyone that is discarding one) that has a built-in speaker/mic for recording and playing back messages (not the handset elements) I want it. The piezo element makes a terrific earpiece for the 1-transistor transceiver. The one I salvaged is black, has 2 wires, is about 1.25 inches in diameter, has 3 mounting tabs around the perimeter, and is marked '1006-T' in white ink. The classic crystal earphones I ordered do not work.

Phil - you're the crystal radio guy - what kind of element do you think this is?

Indeed the ft tut is a nice rig for 80m, and its devices would be a bit tough to homebrew.  I sense a ft tut for another band could be used to build a lower band rig with reasonable mods.  Battery?  80 and 160 tend to be winter bands so indoors I would think current drain is less an issue.

With kits we are at mercy of scarce suppliers.  Could someone create a value oriented multiband rig similar to a sierra or hw8?  Seems like an undertaking for an enterprise vs a club.  But maybe a club could kit a rig with a core containing vfo and IF and audio section snd transmit chain, that could be tailored with choose your band front ends.  Ideas are worth exploring to enable a return to homebuilt pride.

Bill,

The crystal radio "crystal earphones" do indeed work. Not sure what you are thinking there. Perhaps you did not add a 47K to 100K resistor in parallel with the crystal earpiece? The crystal earpieces are actually a capacitor for the most part. Go to www.midnightscience.com and there  on the download pages, you'll find a number of articles. If you don't find what you are looking for, give me an email shout.

I recall that I gave a report at 4SQRP Oz-con some five or more years back on a one- transistor-rig, can't remember the name of the report. Was it the hermorphrodite rig, not sure on spelling.

see you at Oz-con soon!

OM's

Could I get some advice on what to build for 160M and 80M CW?  I was initially looking at KD1JV's 160M Ft. Tuthill or his 160/80 MBDC kit but I am not sure if they will still be available  or not when qrpkits.com's new owners open back up.  I was leaning towards the Ft. Tuthill for 160 as it seems like it would be more battery friendly.

Any advice would be appreciated.  I'd rather build my own new gear vs. going out and buying a KX3, K3 or some Japanese rig.  Building is half the reason I've returned to radio.

Thanks de N1ESE

I guess the old rule needs to be rewritten, perhaps as: "i before e, except after c whenever c is not silent" (as it is in "science").

Ed Meyer, WG5F has stepped up up to the plate as prize chairman this
year and hit a home run. The prize list is at an all time high, both
for quantity and value. More than $1200 has been spent this year by Four
State, and many, many great members have donated prizes to raise the
total. The prize list so far is 102 (!) individual prizes, with an
estimated total value of $4,988 !! In the interest of time this year we
will pre-draw many of the prizes. Attendees can check their ticket
numbers against the list of winners and claim their prize at the prize
table. The top prizes will still be drawn at the end of the
presentations on Saturday. The prize list (so far) is here
http://www.ozarkcon.com/prizes.php Members donating prizes are noted,
as well as their contributions.

We have116 pre-registrants so far While this is an all time high, we
are still hoping for more attendees. There is plenty of room, so please
don't hesitate to register and join the fun.

The speaker lineup is terrific, I know I say this every year, but every
year it's completely true. Check 'em out here along with their topics
