Certificates from the MailBox

Dale Putnam <daleputnam@...>

WOW...  I am blown away...
I know about "contest season" but this is the first time that
it has become "Certificate Season".. for me.

Just received:

First Place - Wa and Wy Single Op QRP Indiana QSO Party 2014
1st place SO QRP SSB #10 NA #10 US CQ WW 160 DX contest
1st place SO QRP CW WY #18 US

I am humbled by the scores.. especially since the "other" guy does all the work,
during the contest.

The Indiana QP occurs at the same time as the 7QP... look for you all in just a couple weeks!!!!
And I will have a new antenna for 160 ready to go for the next CQ 160 DX. This one was a simple BOW TIE.
See you in the next "test"... !!!!
I'll be the itsy signal under the 10 gal hat.

Have a great day,

LCR Meters

JT Croteau <jt.tobit@...>

Can anyone recommend an L/C meter?  I'd really like to add one to my bench primarily for measuring wound toroid inductors.

I know many have used the AADE meters for decades but it seems like there are a bunch of other alternatives on the market these days as well.  Is it still the best option for HF work?  Would any of the cheaper alternatives work just as well?  I don't mean to sound like a cheap tightwad, it's just that money is tight these days and I have a bunch of stuff I'd like to build this year before I move to the Ozarks.

Thanks and 72 de N1ESE

SS-40RX/TX

Jim Sheldon

Just finished the TX portion of this lovely little combo.  Had the SS-40RX built previously and bought the new TX board kit at OzarkCon.  Went together nicely with a couple of warts.  The problem I ran into consists of two little brown variable trimmer capacitors that are totally intermittent.  The tuning disk pivot seems to be flaky internally on 2 of the 5 included trimmers.  I got it to put out about 3 watts with the bad trimmers, and the PA is quite stable.  It looks great on my Elecraft P3 using the P3 as a spectrum analyzer.  Everything fit nicely into the Circuit Specialists LA-5 enclosure which is a good replacement for the Ten-Tec one that's no longer available.  The LA-5 is available from Circuit Specialists, Tempe, AZ (www.circuitspecialists.com) for $16.95 plus shipping (I don't remember just how much the shipping was).

I'll email Wayne, KC0PMH directly and see if he may have some replacement capacitors held back from kitting.

Memo to NSA, DHS, FBI, CIA, DIA, DEA, ATF, KGB, MI5, and any other alphabet soup agencies that might be listening/reading/tracking my email content,  I share this computer with an old lady, an ex-con, a priest, a used car salesman, a military veteran, a pacifist, a vegetarian, a hunter, a circus midget, a local politician, a doberman and a demented cat...so any data you collect from me will be meaningless, random and therefore useless...good luck.

FOXTRAVAGANZA!!!!!

Dale Putnam <daleputnam@...>

The Game Warden... who so graciously invited all to have so much fun in the
just past WINTER season.. has, after much cajoling, and arm twisting.. agreed
to allow us one.. just one.. more shot at getting our FOX this year.. WITH the addition
of each member of the COMMITTEE also allowed to call CQ FOX..
The just past season of FOX and the Committee will be on.. Thursday evening, 7pm MT local...
or at 0100z Friday, the Warden said we can utilize both 80 and 40 acre wood...
(I don't think he will care if we stand very very close to the edges... )
For a whole 90 minutes, we will be allowed to grab all the pelts we can.. that allows
for nearly 1.5 minutes per FOX to find, and obtain a pelt... on each band.

That.. just might be a whole bunch of fun.

Just ONE itsy thing.. since the scorekeeper will NOT be scoring this.. he has requested (and even said "Please")
Please post on the reflector, the number of pelts per woods... each of the FOX pass out.
FOX are this just past season's FOX, and the Committee
FOX may pelt HOUNDS and FOX..
Hounds may grab pelts from FOX

The exchange is the normal - RST-SPC-name-pwr

BEWARE- the names may be changed to protect the guil.....er... innocent... sure.. the innocent.

I wouldn't be too surprised to hear 5 "beasts".... 5 "HICO"  or 5 "Cheese"....
Or maybe... even a "WY Lee"..
See you Thursday the 23rd!!
Have a great day,

SSS is this coming Sunday!

John Lonigro

This coming Sunday is the "SECOND SUNDAY SPRINT". Just pretend April 19th is the 2nd Sunday of the month, this one time only. Ozarkcon always trumps the SSS. There is a partial conflict with the Flying Pigs Run for the bacon contest Sunday night. It might make for lots of activity during the 2nd hour of the contest. Remember, contacts with non-members count the same as contacts with members. They simply need to send their power instead of 4SQRP member number. And, of course, I don't keep track of non-member scores.

Here are the details, which should be familiar to all by now:

Date/time: Sunday, 19 Apr, 2015, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm CDT (0000 - 0200Z Monday).
Bands: 160M through 10M, no WARC bands or 60M.
Frequencies: The usual QRP CW watering holes: 7122 kHz and 3564 kHz.
Also check out these QRP SB watering holes: 3985 kHz, 7285 kHz, 14285 kHz, 21385 kHz, and 28385 kHz
Power: 5 Watts maximum (even on sideband).
Mode: CW or sideband (see above for recommended frequencies).
Exchange: RST, SPC, and member number (members) or RST, SPC, power (non-members).
Calling CQ: "CQ 4S" recommended.

Note: Contacts with the same station on different bands are allowed. Beware: The
sideband and CW portions of a band count as the same band.

Reporting is easy:
Add up your QSOs for each band/mode and send that number to me.

With that in mind, a typical report would be:

Name: Sparky
Call: K9MUT
QTH: Branson, MO
4SQRP number: 5280
Results:
40M: 3 QSOs
80M: 6 QSOs
Total: 9 QSOs

You do not need to list the stations contacted or mode. But if you make
an exotic contact, you might as well brag about it in an optional
bragging section at the bottom of your submittal. I'll include any soapbox comments
when I report the scores (no extra credit).

When you've totaled your score, please send it to:
secondsundaysprint@.... <mailto:secondsundaysprint@....> Put "Sprint" in the subject line. Send the
results by Monday evening if at all possible. I'll tally everything and publish them on
this reflector as soon as possible. I suggest you send them in shortly
after 9:00 pm Sunday so you don't forget. If you see a mistake or
omission when I publish the results, let me know and I'll fix it.

Keep this email until after you've submitted your score for Sunday.
Remember, the 4SQRP member with the most SSS contacts between November, 2014
and September, 2015 will be allowed to use the club's callsign, WQ5RP,
for the 4X4 sprint in October, 2015.

The SSS rules are posted on the 4SQRP website, under "4SQRP On Air
Activities", just in case you delete this email.

72 and good luck in the contest,

John AA0VE
SSS Coordinator

Ozarkcon

David Deitrick

As a first timer, I wish to express my gratitude and appreciation to all who helped make Ozarkcon the great event that it is.

All of the effort of the organizers made for a smooth, glitch free experience.

The helpfulness of everyone whenever a question came up generates a spirit of camaraderie rarely seen in organizations.

The discussions were timely and informative, even if I didn’t quite get everything in the technical sessions.  That just means I have more to learn, and that’s a good thing.

Since I am not very good at remembering names and call signs the first time I run into them, I will just say thanks to everyone who was there for making a very enjoyable weekend.
