RUFZ CALL SIGN DRILL PRACTICE

Phil Anderson

Anybody using the RUFZ program for drilling on copying call signs?

Recall that 'Amateurfunkrufzeichen' translates roughly to 'amateur radio call signal.' Breaking it down Amateurfunk translates to amateur radio; ruf is roughly call and zeichen is roughly signs.

Anyway, I have been using this to try to improve my foreign call sign copying and would like to reduce the number of more complicated calls it automatically generates. That is I want to keep the calls simply, like AB1ED and not AB1ED/etc.

Anybody know how to reduce the call sign set in that program as per above to single calls?

NJQRP Skeeter Hunt is a go!

Larry Makoski <w2lj@...>

Thanks to all who signed up to be Skeeters in the 2015 NJQRP Skeeter Hunt. The roster is set and there are 166 of you who signed up for numbers. My deepest thanks to all of you. Remember, you do not have to have a Skeeter number to play, so if you didn't sign up for one, don't feel left out or neglected. All QRPers, whether they be SSB or CW operators are invited to join in on the fun. Anyone who needs a last minute refresher on the rules can find them at www.qsl.net/w2lj

Be safe, have a great time and enjoy yourself and the great outdoors.

Please remember, all Log Summaries (actual logs are NOT needed) are due to be mailed to w2lj@... no later than Midnight, Monday August 24th.

SSS Reminder

John Lonigro

Remember, the SSS is Sunday night (tomorrow) from 7:00 - 9:00 pm CDT. Three certificates are awarded at the end of the SSS season, which is after the September SSS. So if you are in the running for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place, you are within reach of one of the coveted awards, suitable for framing.

It was a dark and stormy night. No - wait - that was last night.
It was the best of times - it was the worst of times. There - now that's better.
Joe (KF0XV the hero of our story) listened intently on his long wire through the QRN for any sign of a radio signal.
And there it was! KV6Z calling frantically for net QNIs.
Joe tried his best to get through but his signal strength just wasn't enough to do the job.
Trouble at the Old Mill, Lassie!
Then Joe, a resourceful and seasoned operator, switched to his dipole to save the day!
The message got through and the net was a success with 0.09746% of the membership checking in.

SSS is this Sunday!!!!

John Lonigro

This coming Sunday is the "SECOND SUNDAY SPRINT". The October 4x4 sprint is only 2 months away. If you are still in the running for the privilege of using the club's WQ5RP callsign, don't stop now. If you are hopelessly behind, jump in there anyway to sharpen your skills for next year. I'm thinking of making changes to this sprint for the next year, as well as to the 4x4 contest, assuming I have time to put the new rules together. They won't be much different from the current rules, and there aren't any changes yet.

Here are the details, which should be familiar to all by now:

Date/time: Sunday, 9 August, 2015, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm CDT (0000 - 0200Z Monday).
Bands: 160M through 10M, no WARC bands or 60M.
Frequencies: The usual QRP CW watering holes: 7122 kHz and 3564 kHz.
Also check out these QRP SB watering holes: 3985 kHz, 7285 kHz, 14285 kHz, 21385 kHz, and 28385 kHz
Power: 5 Watts maximum (even on sideband).
Mode: CW or sideband (see above for recommended frequencies).
Exchange: RST, SPC, and member number (members) or RST, SPC, power (non-members).
Calling CQ: "CQ 4S" recommended.

Note: Contacts with the same station on different bands are allowed. Beware: The
sideband and CW portions of a band count as the same band.

Reporting is easy:
Add up your QSOs for each band/mode and send that number to me.

With that in mind, a typical report would be:

Name: Sparky
Call: K9MUT
QTH: Branson, MO
4SQRP number: 5280
Results:
40M: 3 QSOs
80M: 6 QSOs
Total: 9 QSOs

You do not need to list the stations contacted or mode. But if you make
an exotic contact, you might as well brag about it in an optional
bragging section at the bottom of your submittal. I'll include any soapbox comments
when I report the scores (no extra credit).

When you've totaled your score, please send it to:
secondsundaysprint@4sqrp.com. Put "Sprint" in the subject line. Send the
results by Monday evening if at all possible. I'll tally everything and publish them on
this reflector as soon as possible. I suggest you send them in shortly
after 9:00 pm Sunday so you don't forget. If you see a mistake or
omission when I publish the results, let me know and I'll fix it.

Keep this email until after you've submitted your score for Sunday.
Remember, the 4SQRP member with the most SSS contacts between November, 2014
and September, 2015 will be allowed to use the club's callsign, WQ5RP,
for the 4X4 sprint in October, 2015.

The SSS rules are posted on the 4SQRP website, under "4SQRP On Air
Activities", just in case you delete this email.

72 and good luck in the contest,

John AA0VE
SSS Coordinator

Shooting trouble in fresh-built cyclone 40

Kenneth Ketner

Greetings:

I am a newbie to this list, although not to qrp or kit building or to following the history of the excellent 4sqrp club.

Recently I acquired a cyc 40 unbuilt kit from the web, built same, on first test, heard a few cw sigs, but then it went down from there. Didn't complete the tx alignment steps because unable to make rx align steps work. My kit is serial number 10, and and it has a number of mods required .... for first 100 boards. Because this kit sat around before I got it, there could be some component issues. It is a promising rig that I want to see in good shape. Don't trust my diagnosis skills, being more of a tube dude than solid state (especially those SS components with more than 3 leads), so hoping I can locate an ace trouble shooter who can get it going. It is a promising xcvr. Can send rig and papers, etc. if you are willing. Would want to pay for this service.

Wayne Dillon

Good evening assembled gentlefolk,
It looks like I'll be your MC for the 80m net this evening, We'll be kicking off at 20:30 CDT (01:30z) and cruising at a frequency of 3.564 Mhz (+/- QRM/N). I look forward to working y'all this evening. If it stays fine I'll be in the front deck with the KX3, if it's inclemment I'll be in the shack with the FT920 @ <5 watts.
Antenna will be the W3EDP orientated E-W at an average of 20' AGL (on 80 that's a cloud warmer!).
See y'll later
