Love the cool WX, but it's cool enough!!

Send in your scores

John Lonigro

The 4x4 sprint is now history. Hope it was fun and enjoyable for all. All that remains is to send me your score (4x4@4SQRP.COM). Remember to put SPRINT or 4X4 in the subject line, just so I know it's related to the sprint. I will try to tabulate the scores on Tuesday, before my bike ride. Please send your score to me by Monday night at the latest.

If the sprint wasn't fun and enjoyable and if you can think of rule changes that would make it so, please send me those suggestions. Replying to me at this email is best, as I only check the other email when tabulating scores. I've more or less inherited the sprint rules (4x4 and SSS) and have made small changes along the way, but let me know if you have a better idea. Just remember that the more complicated you make the scoring, the less amenable to the change I will be. I've got the SSS down to a science, but it still takes about 2 hours to tabulate everything, format the soapbox comments, etc, plus several more hours making the certificates. This 4x4 Sprint, being an annual event, could have slightly more complicated rules that I wouldn't mind adding. The goal is to make it a fun event while not requiring me to spend days putting together the report.

Was at two sites today for the Sprint. The first was a on a "hill" in TX and only worked one Q, a 6 station not in the sprint, and he was using a KW. Mostly on 20M. That was for 3 hours. Then, went to a park on a lower "hill" and made one Q on 40M in the last 1/2 hour.....guess who....?, well of course .......WA0ITP. Thanks Terry, but where was everybody else ? Will post some pictures later.

4x4 score calculator

John Lonigro

Folks:

It has been brought to my attention that the 4x4 score calculator spreadsheet I uploaded to the 4SQRP website has an error in it (thanks Bill, KV6Z). The error only seems to be in the cell which computes your total score. Here's what you need to do:

1) Whenever you enter a number in a cell, please press the "tab" key to enter it and go to the next cell. That will prevent input errors, especially when you try to enter the last number. I believe if you do that, you'll see it computes all of the points correctly, other than the total. Also make sure you fill in the "Field Operation" (enter Y or N), as well as the info at the top of the spreadsheet (name, call, etc)

2) You can simply add the two subtotals (member-to-member and member-to-non-member), add an additional 80 points if you operated from the field, then save the spreadsheet with your callsign as its name. Send the spreadsheet to me (4x4@4SQRP.COM). You can mention the correct total score in the body of the email if you wish, but I will compute it myself anyway. I will ignore the "Total Score" cell in the spreadsheet, manually compute your total, and tally the results.

Sorry for the error. As they say, "To err is human." I must be one heck of a human (hi).

72,

John AA0VE

2015 Oceania DX Contest - 3/4 October (PHONE) and 10/11 October (CW)

James Rodenkirch

I entered the CW contest last year and enjoyed the challenge of working OC entrants with QRP power -- they added a QRP category in 2014 so, if time permits, get on and participate.....72 de Jim R. K9JWV

Subject: 2015 Oceania DX Contest - 3/4 October (PHONE) and 10/11 October (CW)
Date: Fri, 2 Oct 2015 13:17:47 +1000

Dear entrant in the 2014 OCDX contest

A reminder that the 2015 Oceania DX contest (OCDX) is running over the next
two weekends.

As always, this will be a great opportunity to work a lot of DX stations in
the Oceania region, as well as giving your station a test drive for the new
contest season and CQ WW contest events later in the year. We are expecting
another good turn out from VK, ZL and YB stations, as well as stations from
some of the rarer Pacific entities.

Hopefully you will be able to join us again and let's see see if we can
make it the biggest and best Oceania DX contest party ever!

Anything you can do to publicise the contest and encourage other contesters
and DXers to get on the air in the 2015 OCDX contest would also be greatly
appreciated. More information about the 2015 contest is provided below.

We look forward to seeing you in the pileups!

2015 OCEANIA DX (OCDX) CONTEST

The main aim of the contest is to promote HF contacts with stations in the
Oceania region. Oceania stations can work other Oceania and non-Oceania
stations. Non-Oceania stations can only work Oceania stations.

We are pleased to announce that the 2015 contest includes two new plaques
aimed at Indonesian entrants - Karsono Suyanto YB0NDT is sponsoring a plaque
for the highest scoring entrant from Indonesia in the PHONE Single Operator
All Band category, and the YB Land DX Club is sponsoring a plaque for the
highest scoring entrant from INDONESIA with a General Licence (YD/YG prefix)
in the PHONE Single Operator 40M Band category

The OCDX Contest Committee is sad to report the passing of Mirek Rozbicki
VK6DXI earlier this year. Mirek was the sponsor of the Frank Vander Drift
VK3COF Memorial Plaque that was awarded to the highest scoring station from
Europe in the CW Single Operator ALL Band category. Slawek Barciuk VK3CTN
has kindly offered to pick up the ongoing sponsorship of this plaque. This
will now be known as the VK6DXI Memorial Plaque - in recognition and memory
of Mirek’s significant contribution to the OCDX contest and amateur radio
 contesting more generally.

Here is an abbreviated summary of the rules for the 2015 contest:

PHONE: 08:00 UTC Saturday 3 October to 08:00 UTC Sunday 4 October
CW: 08:00 UTC Saturday 10 October to 08:00 UTC Sunday 11 October

Bands: 160M to 10M (excluding WARC bands).
Exchange: RS(T) + serial number.
QSO points: 20 points per QSO on 160M; 10 points on 80M; 5 points on
40M; 1 point on 20M; 2 points on 15M; and 3 points on 10M.

Final Score: The sum of the QSO points multiplied by the number of
prefixes worked (the same prefix can be counted once on each band).

Entry Categories:
Single Operator All Band QRP (max 5W)
Single Operator All Band Low Power (max 100W)
Single Operator All Band High Power
Single Operator Single Band QRP (max 5W)
Single Operator Single Band Low Power (max 100W)
Single Operator Single Band High Power
M1 - Multiple Operators and Single Transmitter (only one transmitted signal at any time)
M2 - Multiple Operators and Two Transmitters (no more than two transmitted
signals at any time and on different bands)
MM - Multiple Operators and Multiple Transmitters (no more than one
transmitted signal at any time on each band)
Shortwave Listener (receive only) All Band

Trophies and plaques will be awarded as listed on the web site at
 http://www.oceaniadxcontest.com/trophies.htm. Certificates will be awarded
to the winning stations in each of the categories above - for each continent
and country. A participation certificate will also be awarded to every
station that makes at least one valid QSO.

Log Submission Deadline: All logs must be emailed (or postmarked) NO LATER
than 31 October 2015. Logs are to be sent as an e-mail attachment to

Re: 80M CW Net Checkins [1 Attachment]

Wayne Dillon

Thanks for checking me in Terry,
Nice to be able to get into the net on 80 again. The usual 80m set-up, KX3 and the W3EDP antenna via a 4:1 balun from the front deck. Yes I heard Chas, when I did hear him he was a good 559 to 569 then he disappeared. On 40 Bill was 579 when I checked in but disappeared on the final exchange. Still good to be able to check into both nets. Thanks to Bill and Terry for a sterling job.

Hello 4SQRPers,

This is the first time this season that I've heard the 80m net, though only bits and pieces of Terry and the other guys.  Just for giggles I dropped my callsign twice.  Terry, you rascal, you actually heard me!

It's pretty obvious that I won't be able to get serious about a 80m QNI until I can get another vertical up to replace the 76' up and 90' out inverted L.  That  was a 160m design that fixed the point of maximum current--a quarter wavelength (128') back from the open end as in ALL antennas--to occur at a point half way up the 76' vertical section, thus concentrating maximum current in the vertical section.  The ash tree support died, as all our ash trees are dying from two separate diseases gifted us by the wooden packing crates we get that contain the crapola we buy from China.

I hope a replacement antenna will happen this autumn; there's 1.5 miles of 12-gauge wire in the ground waiting to help the radiation.

72,

Charles (aka Chas), W2SH

Nice net tonight, 80 was pretty good and seems to get better each week.  Deep QSB at times, but not a problem.  At the beginning I thought I heard Bill KV6Z call, but he didn't come back.  I also thought I heard Chas W2SH, but lost him also.  I've been know to make a whole QSO out of band noise when I'm desperate so they might not have been there. :o)  Bart was using his new KX3 which was delivered the day before Brutus.

Bart and Johnny struck up a QSO after net,  good to hear them having a nice chat.  Bill used to work new contacts after net while chasing the W25 certificate.  This is a good use of the net freq, keep at it everyone.  Hope to see you tmrrw on 7122 at 8AM

Hello,

I moved the propane tank to outside the yard and was deep in aluminum paint at
net time. See you next week - maybe I can have all the paint off of me by
then!
