Thanks for the info about cutting the mat. Based on Dale's comment, I'm thinking maybe I should not cut it. I'll see if I can fold it or make it fit the work space somehow..

Martin, I sold my 817 for three reasons: weight incl external batt, complicated menues, and small display...it was a great radio in the shack, but not what I was looking for "in the field". KX-3

PAC-12 antenna works reasonably well. Small vertical, which can either be commercially purchased or homebrewed. I used the homebrewed version for years.

Michael, Some good suggestions from others.
QRPMEkits has a nice small ant tuner as a kit if you decide to use one.
I have used both a full sized dipole as inverted Vee- requires at least 40 foot

With the mats I'm familiar with the only downside to cutting it is the piece you remove may not have a snap to attach the ground connection. That's a minor detail and you may not even care about the
