Brings back font memories(not) of growing up in North Dakota back in the early 50's.  40 miles South of the Canadian border and 80 miles East of Montana, little town called Tioga in the Williston Basin oil fields.  Exact same Spring conditions - snow one day, muddy dirt roads the next from around mid March until at least the first week in May.  20 foot snow drifts during the winter, etc.

Do I miss it?  Not even close!

QRPme Contact Us 'issues'...

Rex Harper

Gangue,

I have kept an eye on my QRPme Contact Us email folder lately and have suspected something was wrong. I have emails from exactly THREE people since the end of January. Lately, people have mentioned that I have been unresponsive to their emails and I keep searching my folders for their emails and I keep coming up empty! Something is definitely wrong with my website email link!

If you have sent me emails via my website and have not received a reply from me, PLEASE use my personal email address: w1rex '--at--' megalink.net. This was my first email address and it has worked fine for me for as long as I've had email!

I DO want to hear about ANY problems you have about any of my kits, QRPme or just plain me. I work hard to keep 'fans of the can' happy.

I'm only a one-man operation and many things have conspired against me in the last few months so back orders have climbed. I've worked through most of the issues and things are looking much better now. Check my website homepage for more detailed info on kit status. The big news is that I have engaged a kitter for Rockmite ][ kits and have had several fans offer to kit other kits in my line. Once I get everyone on-board and actually getting kits kitted, QRPme will be shipping orders in a VERY timely manner.

problems reviving an old SW40

moshecontra

Hello group.  I'm new here.  Recently came back into ham radio, and bought an old SW40 (prequel to the SW40+) on ebay.  Nicely built in a larger-than-normal (still small!) enclosure with a multi-turn mechanical drive for the tuning pot.  But, I get very weak audio from the headphone jack.  Tried both low and high impedance headphones.  Can barely hear any difference between the antenna being connected or not.  If I touch the input of U3 (the product detector) with a screwdriver I get loud noises.  Much less so with the input of U1 (the first mixer), or its output (at the top of the RFC there).  And no noise at all touching the antenna input, even at the RF gain pot.  Any ideas?  Thanks.

Hi Chip, nice to meet u.  Real dollar value aside, radio love is strange, like beauty, it resides in the eye of the beholder.  Yes, the HW-8 is a simple, build-it-yourself radio with real control knobs and modern radios can perform circles around it, but for me it has charm.  I shake at the key when I work DX with it, just like when I made my first QSO so many years ago, and Ham Radio never grows old.  The HW-8 is a fun machine and maybe that's why it goes for $512 on ebay.  That's a nice photo of u with the K2.

According to the government, $1 in 1980 bought what $2.83 buys now, so an unbuilt HW-8 carries a bit of a premium on Ebay, but not really outrageous. Now if we look at radio performance per dollar, well that would be a very different story!

Yes, boxed, unbuilt Heathkits are like gold.  Recently, on ebay,  a HW-8 kit went for $515 and another went for $497, almost 4 times the original price.  I'm a Heathkit nut but I wasn't the buyer.  I purchased my spare kit back in 1980.

Greetings fellow QRPers,    My name is George Bailey WA5HRC and I'm on the same wavelength with you as I operate QRP with a HW-8 that I built in 1980 and, just to make you drool, I also have an unbuilt  HW-8 still in the sealed factory box that I hold as a spare.  I'm new to the newsgroup and mainly I enjoy reading and learning from the different postings.    But now I have a burning question that cannot be found with a google and I need to pick at the collective brain of the group.   At a hamfest recently, it was my good fortune to find and purchase a mint condition WWII Navy Flameproof Key # CMI-26003A.  It is such a nice key to send with that I've shelved my trusty ole J-38.   Between the adjustment screws is what looks to be a 6/32 screw and when removed it is only about 3/16 of a inch long.  When I shine a light down into the screw hole I see only a void area.  As to the function of this screw, I would guess it is acting as a cap for the void and further that some compound, lube and/or contact cleaner,  is supposed to be sprayed into the key through the screw hole.  Can anyone expand on this?
