Re: Morse Code wins again

Read that early this morning.  At least it got "Morse code" in the news.  Guessing he memorized tones as the lock was used. I am curious how he was allowed time, unauthorized time, to play with the key pad and figure out the actual code.  All this presumes the lock/keys emitted tones during operation.

Also, wondering why he was in the place if he had that much cognitive ability.

Hobby Lobby Boxes for Crystal Spotter

Jim, N5IB

Here's some info passed along from Dave, W3BJG ....

"When I went to Hobby Lobby and entered the part number for the wooden box,SKU 288743S, I too found that it was no longer available. In snooping around their (Hobby Lobby) web site, I found a "nest" of three (3) wooden boxes but no dimensions were given. I took a chance and ordered the set, SKU 299743. @ $7.47.

They arrived today and the smallest in the set is exactly the one for the Crystal Spotter Kit.
These three (3) boxes measure (outside dimensions) L X W X H:

Small 3 1/2" X 2 3/8" X 1 3/4"
Med 5" X 3 5/8" X 2 1/2"
Large 5 7/8" X 5" X 3 3/8"
So I got the right box plus I have two (2) spares for other projects."

Thanks for the suggestion Gene. It was very interesting - so much so that I watched the whole thing start to finish, like a good book that couldn't be put down.

I’ve checked with Bletchley Park. As long as it fits inside your suitcase and doesn’t tip off the Gestapo, it’s bloody good show.

Yes, you can only use one on days that end in Y.

Roger that. One of my first QSOs with my first Green Panel Bayou Jumper was with a station in Normandy, France, commemorating D-Day, the 6th of June. That daylight QSO was on 7.030 MHz using a bent and shortened 80/40 Dipole in my attic. The antenna is more important than adding an additional 5 or more Watts. However, do use a tuner in between the BJ and the antenna if the antenna is not resonant. Try it and have fun. 73. Griff NE3I

Thanks, Gene.  I'll definitely check that out.

The spy-radio genre is kind of cool, and one has to appreciate the guts it took to be in a position to use them.

Mike

Each time we increase power 4X the impact is roughly 1 S unit at the receive end. So going up to 10w is a pretty small change. Also, to drive a typical 10w RF amp you will likely need to modify the paraset to output less than 1w.  A lot of effort for little gain.

If antenna space is scarce, evaluate if you erect something at least partly vertical. A UK ham has a small garden vertical antenna on line that looks rather nice.

Re: Tuner LEDs

Edited

I did some more testing tonight.  After getting a good green I dialed it in a little more with a meter and the tuner on out.  I switched it back to in and the red was even dimmer.  I practiced this quite a while and got pretty good at getting things right.  This posting was helpful.

The tuner really is amazing.  I tuned my resonate 20 meter wire to 40 and 80.  I did some ft8 at 1 and 5 watts with great results.

Thanks for the input.  Bryan KJ7PRS
