QRP-Lers,

Completed a QSO with Jim, N5IB, this morning (3 Aug 3015) on 5.373 MHz with 559 sigs both ways.

Jim is 380 miles from me. Rig here is Rockmite-80 conversion to 60 meters. Feeding Topper-60 amplifier for about 5 Watts output to a z-match tuner and via 100 ft feedline to 88 ft EDZ up 40 ft.

First QSO for me on 60 meters first QRP QSO on the band also.

The sliest sounds like it has the summer doldrums. Not much traffic. I ordered a MTR and matching MTR end fed antenna from LNR Precision. I can't wait to play with it. To my memory I have never bought an end fed antenna. This 20-30-40 antenna reads like it should be good. Anyhow I will enjoy playing with it. Other than that I have been getting my walks early and gardening when the sun goes down. My tomatoes are slowing down their production... I have even canned several pints.....I have Sunday work to get done CUL

Hey Paul and the Group
Well it's been quiet around here as well.
I haven't spent hardly any time at all on the bench or on the air this summer.
Work and weekend projects around the house have been consuming all my energy.
If it wasn't for the Wednesday night nets, I'm note sure I would even be radio active!!
When I sit down and tune up on Wednesday night, I remember why I love this hobby.
Even if it is on Tuesday night when I tried to call the nets!!
Wayne, I wanna work u and the bug, but I need to warm mine up first!!
Hope you guys have had a great summer.

Re: Has anyone tried the Battery Tender LiFePo battery?

I built a 25ah pack that weighs about 7 lbs. Allbattery.com sells 3.7 v cells that you wire in series and a battery control module to balance the four cells during charge. The cells are about 3/8" thick and 5-1/2"x10" and make a nice flat pack. It cost about $200 but will hold a voltage above 12 v for a long time. It starts out at about 13.4 volts. Tested with my FT-857 on receive (650ma) and it ran for 37 hours before it hit 11.9 v.   The 857 gets funky at about 11.9 v on xmit,  so a normal 12v deep cycle battery doesn't last long.  Can operate qrp for a looong time and 100 watts for most of a day or more.

Alas it is not a 7.9AH battery.  It is claimed to be an OK replacement for a lead acid battery of between 7 and 9 AH, in the particular use pattern of a motorcycle battery.  I.e., it can crank a starter like a lead acid battery of that size.  But judging by the weight, it's probably about 2.5 AH in actual capacity if used as a deep-cycle power source without an engine to constantly charge it.

That said, LiFePO4 tech batteries are great, but still expensive for the capacity.  If weight is far more important than price then go for it.  These are far less likely to burst into flames than the Lithium Ion batteries.  Be careful to only buy packs that have an internal circuit to protect against over- and under-charge and to balance the charge among the cells.  I have no idea if this brand has it, but if it is really suitable as a drop-in replacement for a lead-acid battery then it better have it!

Hello Dave,

Not that particular one, but I have one of similar size.  I can recommend the LiFePO4 technology, they're superb batteries.  That price seems high, altho I haven't bought one for several years.

Hi Paul,
Sounds like the perfect Sunday. I have some "stuff" to do but nothing drastic. For those of you who may have copied my call with some questionable CW yes it was me, on the vibreplex bug. This beast takes some getting used to, a paddle it aint! Thanks to the super generosity of one of our 4SQRP family I have some extra weight to slow it down to where I can cope with it, But that said, it's fun. I'm using the RBN as a meter of my proficiency, if the skimmers copy my call and CQ then maybe I'm getting better :) ???

I'm not aware of any posting problems that I've
had from any of the several Yahoo groups I belong
to including the ones I started.

That includes sending original messages and
replying. Also posting to Files with various formats and Pictures.

I'm using Eudora for messages, PDF24, MS Internet
Explorer, MS Office Professional Plus and Canvas for most everything.

It appears that my problem is when I reply to
Yahoo. If I enter the
