Our friends in the UK seem to like the term 'battery' better. Although 'piles' is understood in Britain, one must be specific to call it a Voltaic Pile otherwise the conversation gets a mite

There's a very interesting museum dedicated to Volta in Como, Italy - on the shore of the lake. You can see many of the materials he used in his experiments and information about his life.
