Hope to work you, Bill! Happy paddling!
If you have a chance to get pictures, your adventures would sure
make a fine article for the Ozark QRP Banner.

Re: Sealed lead Acid Battery caution
For myself, I just take advantage of the trickle-charge function of my KI0BK PwrGate I picked up at Ozarkcon this year. This allows me to trickle-charge/float my bank of 4 17Ah batteries direct

Sealed lead Acid Battery and Smart Charger
I've wasted a number of batteries that were probably recoverable... :-)
The smart charger with the desulfating feature I have has a Black and Decker label and was sold by Walmart at the time.

Hi Wayne,
I use a Powerstream # 3P10-A1015 and love it. Its good for 12VSLA batteries from 0.8 to 20 Ah ratings. I got mine from Morse Express for about $18. See it at

All good advice, once again I was nearly a victim of my own dumb-ass actions. I was really embarrassed to admit to but I really wanted others, who may not be a experienced with SLA's to be aware of

With that battery voltage, it sounds to me like it was badly sulfated.
I've recovered some batteries with voltages that low by running them through a couple or sometimes several desulfating cycles of

I think your first clue was you said the battery was "dead". Even when discharged, it shouldn't be too far from 12 volts (I'm assuming it was a 12 volt battery that read 5.65 volts). I

Re: Sealed lead Acid Battery caution
Great idea using a constant current source as a charger.
A really simple LM78xx constant current source circuit can be added to the
output of your normal charger. Check the data sheets for details.

Hi Wayne,
This is one of the reasons I use a constant current source to charge all of my batteries. In a case like yours with a shorted cell (or more likely two cells) the current limit will not
