Re: Spook Light

Phil Anderson

Is this the same thing as the "lights" often seen over time in the north east corner of Arkansas?
When I first brought out my ultrasound receiver with dish to hunt for RF interference, got several
calls from some CA spook guys wondering if it would hear ghosts? Ha. I told them I didn't think so
and they should use a whistler receiver like for Sferics at 2 to 10 kHz RF. You might try that Johnny.

We have an old farm house nearby that all of the locals say is haunted
with a "good ghost"
It is supposed to be a lady that appears now and then but does no
harm, just glowing lights in the house late at night?
I am not one to second guess, so I am going to take their word for it!

We did see the light and found as most would say, when you think
your getting close to it, it's gone and appears some distance behind
you. Pretty strange !

Want to operate as HP3/(yourcall) ?

Don Jackson

A couple months ago I sent an email to this reflector without any positive results, so I'm repeating it.

If you ever had a desire to become a DX station for a few weeks, here is something you may be interested in. It won't be real rare DX, but not that common either.

I'm talking about Panama (HP).

I'd like to return there for about 3 weeks with opportunity to operate from the very temperate climate of the western Panamanian mountains, namely the Chiriqui Province and the Boquete area in particular (HP3). I have some things pretty well lined up, but not confirmed yet -- for instance a casita with a ham-friendly ex-Canadian landlord.

I am seeking one ham traveling companion, age is not important, but being a "nice guy" and a non-smoker is. The tentative dates (not cast in concrete yet) are Oct. 21 to Nov. 14. I've got a lot of details and information, so if you can get away for that period and share the expenses, please email me directly and let me know of your possible interest and give your phone number and best times to call. I'll respond with a website URL along with additional information, then phone you so you can ask additional questions. Please don't hesitate, as this offer/solicitation will go out to other groups within a few days if I don't find anyone in the 4sqrp group -- time is of essence especially for reservations and passport application (if you don't have one).

I am intending to operate QRP with 5 watts and also 100 watt power when needed. I'm not a DXer nor contester, so my own operating will be more at a leisurely pace for the fun of it. I plan to visit some places of interest while there on this 3 week trip -- such as highest point in Central America (11,000+ ft) where if conditions are right, one can see both the Pacific and Atlantic (Caribbean) from the same place (Maybe even operate there -- SOTA?). A trip to the beach on the Pacific coast is well within a days jaunt. Broadband internet, cell phones, main roadways good, ATMs, McDonald's and Pizza Hut, you can drink the water, etc. Very friendly people in general. No money exchange, they use US paper money. Spanish speaking not necessary, but it wouldn't hurt.

The "temperate climate" means a high of around 76-80 F in daytime and low of around 60 at night with moderately high humidity at around 4,000 ft. above sea level, about 40 miles from the Pacific Ocean and like Florida, typically rains in the afternoons during this season. A beautiful area where some $100+ per pound coffee is grown and quite a few U.S. ex-pats have settled there permanently.

Cheapest flights plus a new passport will run about $600 round trip with early reservations. If you already have a passport, you save $135.

My direct email address is donj at ae5k dot us

PS - If you are not interested but do know someone who may be (and he qualifies as one of those "nice guys" and non-smoker), please feel free to pass this on to him. I would be flying from Dallas/Ft.Worth (DFW) via Ft. Lauderdale (FLL) to Panama City (PTY), and I plan to drive to DFW.

Re: [cwops] RMRc net changes

Dale Putnam

The RMRC net met twice today, with AA7CU -AZ, KC0PMH - KS, NE5DL -T X, KE6OIO - CA, and K6MGO - CA
the first net at 2045z. Second net to test the time change props had N9RLO - IN with a good signal.
The effects of Momma Nature, and her Prop Princess with one short test is difficult to analyze.
Next Tuesday, expect to hear me call the net at 2045 and at 2245, or 2:45pm and 4:45 pm.
Maybe by then I will get the parts for the K2.

Was fun to have Wayne from Ks check in... maybe the repair of my feedline helped more than I thought.
Will be fun to see if he can hear us next week too.
John in In had a good signal, I should have continued talking with him, one never knows if there are others waiting.
Sorry John, will be longer next Tuesday, for the second net.
See you all then.
Have a great weekend,

Thank you all for checking in..

Have a great day,

The RMRC net has been effectively blown off the air, by Momma Nature two days of two weeks now.
I am not real happy with that, and as a result, the next net THURSDAY ONLY,
will be a two net day... so to test the props and find out what to expect, we will have two nets...
One at the regular time.. of 2045 start or 2:45pm MT, 14.0625 the next or
SECOND NET - will be called at 2345z or 5:45 pm MT this Thursday ONLY.

I still haven't gotten the parts needed to repair the effects of the last spark event, and am reluctant to
offer the prop princess any more burnt offerings, I would dislike to be perceived as "hogging" the offerings.
So the radio in use will be interesting to note.

New antenna plans are in the making for the station, with many hours being applied to modeling with NEC.
Hopefully the results will pay off, in a couple weeks.

Hope to see you tomorrow.. either net. OR Both.!!

thank you for the bandwidth

Have a great day,

When I was a Scoutmaster, I took our Boy Scout troop camping at Childress, the scout camp between Neosho and Joplin and we went looking for the spook lights on two nights.  Saw a lot of people looking with us, but never saw the lights.  We were all so disappointed.

Yep, first and only contact on the early net. Quality not quantity right :)
The SSB expirement was a good one Dan, let's try it again. My NCS duties will resume normally the first week of September. I have enjoyed the break but I'm looking forward to being back in the hot seat. Johnny has done an outstanding job as the 40m NCS, thank you sir, you are a gentleman and a scholar (as we used to say in the UK).

Wednesday evening 40m nets

Wayne Dillon

Good morning all,
Not a spectacular evening, I'm guessing the WX had a lot to do with that but nonetheless contacts were made.
early net:
KB9JLO - Dan - IL
Dan was the only station I heard although I called until about 00:55. I did go up to the proposed SSB frequency but heard not a murmer. Dan's CW signal was good 'n' strong, proof positive if we needed it that CW wins over SSB most of the time.
late net:
KD0SZS - Daniel - MO
KU4GW - Floyd - NC
W4QO - Jim - GA
All the late net signals were weak but copyable with much QSB.
Thanks to all and if you were in there and I didn't pull you out, thanks for trying. Your efforts are always much appreciated.

I had 1 contact tonight - John N9RLO in IN. He was running 10 watts to a NVIS dipole and I was running the FT-817 and full steam (5 watts) and the W3EDP EFW.

Hey it was a good experiment right?
And I believe I was Wayne's first contact on 7.122!

Tough net tonight in Radar's hometown.   I couldn't here Wayne at all on 40, and only had 2 checkins on 80.  Thanx to all who tried and to Steve and John for making it in.  I won't be able to make it next week, so someone pse step in and  handle it, thank you.
