My pig rig is now on order and Terry has me on the list for the needed crystals .

Normally I don't do a lot of kits , but do build daily on perf board and point to point wiring . I literally have so much homebrew stuff that I am running out of room :)

HOWEVER this group is what made me decide to order a kit and of course knowing Diz and his products helped push me along .

This is reminding me of my old days as a Novice in 1965 (WN0NTU) and I hope he sells MANY more to members of this group . Should always be able to find a person to chat with .

Since it reminds me so much of my Novice days I am going to dig out the old original J-38 that I started ham radio with to use just with this rig . I am out to chat , not set any speed records :)

I may need to build up a code practice oscillator to practice with the J-38 to learn to send good CW with it again .

VERY NICE THAT THIS IS TURNING INTO A CLUB PROJECT !!

If the Group is interested, I'll organize a group purchase of 7122 crystals.  They will probably cost between $1 and $2 each.  I'll take the bulk delivery and mail your 4 xtals to you.  The postage will be on my nickel.

If at least 10 members sign up, I'll go ahead and place the order.  Wanna do it?

Hi All,

I believe it was Diz’s intent to use the Pig Rig for clubs, nets, etc.  Each club (such as 4sqrp) could have their very own frequency setup.  That way, the club members could stay in contact with one another.  It is not necessary to stick with 7030.7KHz but rather the club could pick a different frequency.  Once the club had picked a frequency then the club would buy the required crystals from whomever they like to put their pig rigs on that frequency.  The radio was never intended to be a general purpose 40 meter radio but was intended for single frequency use by clubs or nets.  I remember when I was about 16 years old, the one of the local AM radio stations was giving away am radios as a promotion.  Of course, the radios only received the single am station that was giving them away!  They had a single knob – on/off and volume.

Hi,

To be crystal clear (pun intended) the crystal filter is in the front
end of the receiver and NOT at some IF or "shifted frequency". A VXO
won't help much. It sounds like a lot of fun. But it's not my cup of tea
being so restricted, either. Unless..I have some *other* radios I can
use when the Pig Rig frequency is in use. Like the radios that surround
me when I'm typing emails (evil grin).

Wayne:

If you read the instructions for the Pigrig, you'll see the 3 crystals used in the filter are "highly matched and quality checked" (instruction 9).  In the transmitter alignment section (instruction 15), Diz claims the filter frequency is within 30 Hz of the operating frequency.  Any set of 3 crystals, unless similarly matched, won't work as well.

When Terry orders the crystals for the 7.122 watering hole, Diz will have to similarly match three of the four crystals for each order.  I don't think any group of three crystals marked 7.122 will work.

No, those won't work in a pig rig to get to 7.122 MHz. Those SS-40 crystal sets are actually 16+ MHz crystals used in a hetrodyning receiver environment. The pig rig is direct conversion, so needs crystals on 40 Meters. I hope all of that makes sense.

Hi,

To be crystal clear (pun intended) the crystal filter is in the front
end of the receiver and NOT at some IF or "shifted frequency". A VXO
won't help much. It sounds like a lot of fun. But it's not my cup of tea
being so restricted, either. Unless..I have some *other* radios I can
use when the Pig Rig frequency is in use. Like the radios that surround
me when I'm typing emails (evil grin).

Terry,

Please put me down for a set of crystals.

I don’t have the rig yet, but better get the crystals while I can … that will be all the more incentive to get the rig!

FYI Diz only has 60 PigRigs left.

btw usual disclaimers apply both on the crystals and the rigs.
