It has been exciting to see all the chatter on
the reflector about the Pig Rigs and using 7122. It's great to see so
much enthusiasm.
I ordered the crystals today and they will be
delivered mid to late April. Sri that it will take so long but they
are a special ordered frequency (7122.3) to accommodate the heavy loading
in the filter. Meanwhile you can get the PigRigs up and running on the
crystals that Diz sends in the kit.
The 7122 crystals came in a little higher than
expected, but $2 each will still cover them. As mentioned below, I'm
covering the mailing costs myself, no club money is being spent on this
project. Lets wait until they arrive to pay for them. With Ozarkcon coming
on plus some new kits in the works, I really don't have the time
to manage a list right now.
Additionally the filter crystals will need to be
sorted to be close enough to each other in frequency to produce a
narrow filter bandwith. I'm guessing that
sorting to 20-30 cycles will be adequate, it will take an oscillator and a
counter as a minimum. We will have to 'spearmint with some sorted sets to
make sure.
Anyone volunteer to sort a few and try them
in their rig to check the opposite
sideband suppression?
Its easy: Try it on your pigrig when you
get up and running to get a feel for it.
. Unhook the antenna to the pigrig
. Switch your big rig to a dummy load and turn
down the power
. Then sweep the big rig past the pigrig and
see if you can hear the opposite sideband as the big rig goes past.
. If it's almost non existent, it's good
enough.

Hi
All,
I believe it was Diz’s intent to use the Pig Rig for clubs, nets, etc.
Each club (such as 4sqrp) could have their very own frequency setup.
That way, the club members could stay in contact with one another. It
is not necessary to stick with 7030.7KHz but rather the club could pick a
different frequency. Once the club had picked a frequency then the
club would buy the required crystals from whomever they like to put their
pig rigs on that frequency. The radio was never intended to be a
general purpose 40 meter radio but was intended for single frequency use by
clubs or nets. I remember when I was about 16 years old, the one of
the local AM radio stations was giving away am radios as a promotion.
Of course, the radios only received the single am station that was giving
them away! They had a single knob – on/off and
volume.

Hi,
To be crystal clear (pun intended)
the crystal filter is in the front end of the receiver and NOT at some IF
or "shifted frequency". A VXO won't help much. It sounds like a lot of
fun. But it's not my cup of tea being so restricted, either. Unless..I
have some *other* radios I can use when the Pig Rig frequency is in use.
Like the radios that surround me when I'm typing emails (evil
grin).

Re: Fixing a broken toroid

Todd K7TFC
I, too, have heard of the changes (AsubL?) introduced by gaps in toroids. Instead of glue, I think I might be inclined to use either tape or a zip tie around the circumference of the toroid to hold it back together. I think the right-sized zip tie would be easier because it would allow for more-careful adjustment of the two halves (by cinching the tie to the point of snuggness) before cinching it up tight.
Now I'm sure there would be changes in the number of windings required since the wire would also be wound over the zip tie. It might be, though, that the way to do that would be to use tape to hold the two halves together while winding the toroid, but then to cinch it up tight afterwards with a tie.

In my experience, if it is an iron powder toroid, the effect of gluing a broken part will be minimal. There will be some minor drift of its value over time as oxygen and humidity enter at the break, but if the toroid is part of an output filter network, it is not a major problem. If it is part of a VFO, you might want to consider replacing it.
If the part is a ferrite, there will be a more significant change in its inductance from the small gap that is introduced in the magnetic circuit, especially if the part is a high permeability material like 72 or 77. For an RF transformer, where the open circuit inductance is not critical, you are probably OK. If it is part of a tuned circuit (where ferrites are seldom used), check the circuit to see how a change of inductance will affect it.

Perhaps we could register the flying pig rigs serial numbers on the groups web page as they come on line ??????

Mine was ordered just this past Sunday and is S/N 172 . It would be interesting to see a list of people that have them or get them and the serial numbers , especially the group members .
Charlie , W5COV SKCC #19 and too many others to remember without looking at my list :)

Since I received S/N 152, I am now wondering who will receive S/N's 172, 182, etc...

Lee,
Mine has shipped as #169. I'm actually hoping it's in my mailbox when I get home!!! Time to heat up the soldering iron.

I bought mine (#157) on March 1. Got an acknowledgement that said it had been shipped first class, but no tracking info. Has anybody bought a higher serial number and already has the kit in hand? 73 de Lee KM4YY

Please add me to the list. I have my Pig Rig but have not started construction yet.

That way, the club members could stay in contact with one another. It is not necessary to stick with 7030.7KHz but rather the club could pick a different frequency. Once the club had picked a frequency then the club would buy the required crystals from whomever they like to put their pig rigs on that frequency. The radio was never intended to be a general purpose 40 meter radio but was intended for single frequency use by clubs or nets. I remember when I was about 16 years old, the one of the local AM radio stations was giving away am radios as a promotion. Of course, the radios only received the single am station that was giving them away! They had a single knob â€" on/off and volume. > > Jerry W5JH > > "building something without experimenting is just solder practice" > > > > > > > > From: 4sqrp@yahoogroups.com <mailto:4sqrp%40yahoogroups.com> [mailto:4sqrp@yahoogroups.com <mailto:4sqrp%40yahoogroups.com>] On Behalf Of Bill Cromwell > Sent: Sunday, March 03, 2013 9:16 AM > To: 4sqrp@yahoogroups.com <mailto:4sqrp%40yahoogroups.com>; John R.
