May SSS Results

John Lonigro

I should have expected the turnout on Mother's Day to be low. We only had 8 participants this month, which I believe is the lowest number so far this year.  Coming in first for May was Chas, W2SH, with 18 QSO points.  Chas also leads in the annual contest with 70 points, followed by Nick (WB5BKL) with 53 points and Carl (WB0CFF) with 52.

We had a new participant this month, Roy, WA4DOU, from Elm City, NC. Welcome Roy!  An interesting thing about Roy's entry is most of his contacts were with non-members (5), yet he still came in fourth for the month.  Way to go, Roy.  Hope you can join us every month.  With more member participation in future months (hopefully), you might have better luck finding members to communicate with.

Chas will be receiving his May certificate shortly, after I walk the dog...

Re: 4SQRP preferred logging software?

Thanks to everyone that responded. Much appreciated. I see that there are
multiple options. I just need to choose the one best for me. I also use
the SKCC and NAQCC loggers as I am an active member. One of the two might
be just right for my purposes. I will figure it out.

Best regards,

Gary, K7EK

It's a nice logging program. It is free.  Its *.adi files upload nicely to QRZ.com log, LOTW

Re: audio out and speakers

Kent Trimble, K9ZTV

Be careful of these.

Not because they aren't excellent speakers, which they are.  At last count I have six for use at Field Day, Frankenstein, Boy Scout doings, QRP Sprints, etc.  They were the speaker of choice for many ambulances and public utilities in the old Motorola MOTRAC days which means they can be cranked up quite a bit without distortion.

However, many contain 2 ohm speakers which kill audio components in modern amateur radio transceivers.  The impedance will be stamped (usually) on the speaker magnet.  4 or 8 ohm is what you want, but if 2 ohm is all you can find, resistors of appropriate value can be used to raise the impedance.

They can be had at hamfests, dirty and dusty, but otherwise fully functional for $5 (sometimes per pair) and in either black or brownish-maroon colors.  They will most likely be found at Xenia under a table somewhere, in the flea area, thrown into a box of a dozen or more.  Try to find the matching plastic mounting bracket, too.  Pick the best, remove the speaker, put mild soap and water to the case, and it will look brand new.

A very fine communications speaker.

Hello again,
Another comment on the Hilltoppers. Sitting in the shack and don’t feel the need to wear headphones? With the “audio” mod, I find the Hilltopper will drive a loudspeaker well! After trying many speakers over the years, I found the BEST external speaker is the Motorola HSN4018. Per Motorola, this speaker is a “13 watt water-resistant speaker designed for installation on a motorcycle.” Any rig that drives headphones well will drive this speaker well! These speakers were frequently found used at hamfests. If you find one, grab it!

It's the Monday after the Second Sunday!  Hope nobody got in trouble when they disappeared from the Mother's Day celebration to play on their radio for a couple of hours.

Don't forget to send in your score from last night's SSS.  It's easy. Just go to www.qrpcontest.com/4sqrp.

Thanks John,

That makes sense. I will most likely just use my main logging program, N3FJP's

Gary:
The exchange is so simple that i believe most people use paper and pencil. We are talking maybe 10-15 QSOs as an absolute maximum.  You manually enter your results on qrpcontest.com/4sqrp.

Hope this helps.
