I was on 40m until the 80m net, heard 2 single “CQs” and then silence, kinda like letting the air out of a balloon.  80m here was S8, ESP heard some parts not much else.

Sooner or later we’ll make it from Florida !

Nothing heard on 40m.  On 80m WA9PWP was 569; N4MJ was 559 at best but suffered deep QSB.

ACØBQ was 339.  I dropped my call only twice.  Good ears, Johnny.

Ozarkcon 2020 tidbits

Walter - K5EST

Hi All, yes the Ozarkcon Team has been busy with the
details of the greatest venue of QRP fun in mid-America.

The Speakers this year are in line with the last couple of
years and many are known worldwide for knowledge and
their activity in QRP.

The webmaster will soon be receiving the data to put
the Ozarkcon website into operation. We will need to
proofread and make a few adjustments, then a notice
of "open for pre-registration" will be sent to the reflector.
Please allow us just a little more time to get things finalized.

The Stone Castle Hotel is still on winter break but you
can reserve rooms during normal weekday hours by
calling (417) 335-4700 and asking for the 4 State QRP
block of rooms.

More tidbits to follow later.

February SSS Winner

John Lonigro

The February Second Sunday Sprint results are in. This month's winner is John Laney, K4BAI, with 20 QSO points.  Congratulations, John.  The February scores were quite a bit higher than January's. Last month, 6 points was enough to come in first (out of 9 entries).  This month, 6 points gets you tied for 8th place (out of 12).  The overall winner at this early stage of the contest is Carl WB0CFF, but only by the narrowest of margins, a single point.  In one month, John vaulted from last place (didn't participate in January) to being one point from the lead.

Congratulations to all who participated.  John will receive his certificate shortly.

John, AA0VE

Re: Ham planning Katy Trail across-MO bicycle trip

david gauding

Hello Scott.

I don't know your planned pace but starting in Machens at the eastern terminus (St. Charles, MO) a good place to overnight the first day could be Klondike Park. See: https://www.sccmo.org/690/Klondike-Park  It's about thirty-three miles out. Cabins (reserve early) and primitive camping are available and the park is right on the trail. You can catch lunch or dinner at either bar & grill in Defiance, MO about half-way down the trail on day one. There are quite a few wineries along this stretch too. You won't go hungry or thirsty!

My wife and I started riding the Katy in 1990 when it first opened. These days we live about eight miles from the trail. Sandy still rides it occasionally but health issues keep me off now. I still run QRP portable at Klondike from time-to-time and several other shady spots near/along the trail.

Can't help you on repeaters but I'm sure others will chime in. You will want to set some time side for historic Rocheport, MO and Hermann, MO. Plenty of shops and restaurants to choose from there.

As someone has already mentioned the trail is hard on bikes. I read it's 3/8" minus grade limestone. Bad enough when it's dry but can be a real pain when wet. That said it is still a good riding surface and the scenery is ever changing.

Good;luck with your ride. I trust you will be operating portable along the way. Please keep us posted.

Dave Gauding, NF0R

Re: Ham planning Katy Trail across-MO bicycle trip

Jim

HI Scott,

I'm assuming you've done the rails-to-trails riding before.  KATY is crushed gravel, so prepare for the associated dust & drive train wear.  There are some good breweries and wineries along the route (a hike up to Montel might be worth it, depending upon how heavy all your gear is -- they have a lovely large deck with a scenic view of the surrounding area.  Wine, too!).

https://bikekatytrail.com is a pretty good website for info, as are others (plenty of info on the web for the KATY).

Enjoy your ride, let us know how it goes -- no 40m gear?
