Unless money is changing hands, why bother with signatures?Hi Tommy. Those of us who remember MS-DOS and other early systems can recall not needing a username or password to simply use our computer. It was a bit perturbing to have to do that when I first started learning Linux almost 23 years ago. Eventually Microsoft made user accounts a part of their systems and now it is second nature. Likewise, the use of SSL on the WWW via the HTTPS protocol started out as a means to protect financial transactions and now browsers may complain if a site doesn't use SSL. The world is gravitating toward a greater use of cryptography even for trivial things. Here I'm not even advocating for the use of encryption, just signatures. I agree that most of our communication is of little interest outside of the QRP segment of the amateur radio hobby, but those who wish to play on and against our good will couldn't care less. If you're making a deal with someone to buy/sell things, then it might beI understand your point. I want to be sure that others know and can be reasonably certain via a signature check that it's really me offering some item for sale or offering to purchase some item. Beyond that, I want the same for all my electronic communications, trivial or not, because it is no fun when people believe something was sent when it was really due to a spoof. After that happened to me once, I chose to nip in the bud rather than hope it wouldn't happen again on a larger scale. I am active on quite a number of mailing lists and would like to avoid any loss of good will that may exist. My mail program made it reasonably easy to set up automatically signing my mail, so I do so. I am disappointed that the powers that be of groups.io have chosen to break this very basic way a lot of us that use email extensively to protect ourselves from spoofing. As I may have noted earlier, there are at least two lists I subscribe to that reject signed mail. This is unfortunate and so I mostly just read them and do not participate as much. Regardless, so long as the various lists on groups.io don't reject my signed mail outright, I will continue to send signed mail. 72/73, Nate -- "The optimist proclaims that we live in the best of all possible worlds. Just as a side note on learning CW the long island radio club runs classes on line for those that want learn code or increase speed. They use Zoom video conferencing on line to present the classes.

FOXHUNT: Fox hunt Thursday 11 July N9EP/WX2S
Dale Putnam
Hi folks-just a heads up that our next hunt is this
Thursday 11 July (local date) 0100-0230 July 12 UTC.
I’ll be one of your foxii, the other will be Steve WX2S in NJ. This first-time fox will be hanging out somewhere between 14050-14070 KHz. You will hear the "standard exchange": (substitute appropriate RST) <your call> xx9 IL ED 5W <your call> I will be giving "true" RST reports, so be sure to listen closely. i will be sending at 20 WPM to try and accommodate as many folks as possible. Feel free to call me at any (reasonable) speed. I start to fade at about 40 WPM. I will operate split to start, listening up 1 to 1.5 KHz. I will indicate that I'm listening split by sending "UP". After the calls thin out, I may go to simplex, listen closely for the "UP", if you don't hear it call me simplex. You can probably improve your odds when working simplex if you don't zero-beat me. Hope to hear you all and pass out a lot of pelts! 73 Ed N9EP _

I think it’s always worth asking how you are trying to learn CW? Using a program? Which one? What is the character speed and effective speed? While there may be folks who *can’t* learn Morse code, I’m in the corner of those who believe that almost anyone *can* learn it, when correctly taught. Can you expound a bit on where you are going with Morse? You may be going too fast/too slow or some other obstacle. You are absolutely right about QRP and SSB, at least with band conditions the way they are. I will say though that one of my very few SSB contacts, back in 2012 when the bands were a lot better, I made a contact with 5 watts to Arizona (from Kansas) and the fellow at the other end simply would not believe I was running 5 watts. But in 2012 the bands were not in the absolute depths of the propagation cesspool. I did see in the later responses that there are folks who participate in some QRP voice nets. 72, Chas - NK8O

Unless money is changing hands, why bother with signatures? Most of the emails sent are just yak and opinions. If I don't like it or care, I delete. If someone's going to the trouble of spoofing an email from you, emailing erroneous opinions to the email list is probably not their target. If you're making a deal with someone to buy/sell things, then it might be worth considering. For moderately priced items (dollar amounts I'd be really sad to completely lose), I'll want a phone call or check that your email is the same one I'm sending money to via PayPal (and that you've used that address for some time).

Re: Cryptographic signatures
As I understand it now, Groups.io munges the email body by inserting its
own footer at the end of the message. Since the cryptographic signature does not include this extra text, the signature test fails with the result being a bad signature. The footer, as Groups.io calls it, cannot be removed as mentioned in the FAQ at the bottom of this page: https://groups.io/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Footers I am subscribed to many other lists, mostly about Linux or software development on Linux and all pass the signed data correctly. Even our club mailing list hosted on QTH.net passes it correctly and adds a footer that is separate from the signed message body. Anyway, I wanted to close this thread and say that what I thought would be a useful tool for us is made useless by the mailing list host. 72, Nate -- "The optimist proclaims that we live in the best of all possible worlds. The ten meter folks used to have a backscatter net. They basically pointed their antennas away from whomever they tried to contact. Dunno if this would work with the current low sunspot count. On 7/3/2019 6:25 PM, Dr Jim Kennedy via Groups.Io wrote:

Thank you all for your emails about SSB...I am having to do some downsizing and made the decision to specialize in SSB. The XYL is delighted in the reduction of my gear and I can focus on getting a couple of things done instead of being surrounded by things that others might enjoy. Please let me know of QRP SSB activities or groups.
