audio out and speakers
Paul Goemans
Hello again,
Another comment on the Hilltoppers. Sitting in the shack and don’t
feel the need to wear headphones? With the “audio” mod, I find the Hilltopper
will drive a loudspeaker well! After trying many speakers over the years, I
found the BEST external speaker is the Motorola HSN4018. Per Motorola, this
speaker is a “13 watt
water-resistant speaker designed for installation on a motorcycle.”
Any rig that drives headphones well will drive this speaker
well! These speakers were frequently found used at hamfests. If you find one,
grab it!

I was diagnosed in stage 3 back in 2007, but beat it after 7 months of IV chemotherapy and radiation followed by a autologous stem cell transplant. It came back in stage 1 in 2010, but I was able to put it into remission again after 8 months on 25 mg Revlimid and I still take the 15 mg ones 21 out of every 28 days to keep it in remission, I hope for many many years to come since there is no cure for it, but Revlimid just zaps my energy and I never feel much like doing anything at all other than playing on my radios or laptop PC. Well, I've been feeling good just recently so I finally mustered up the energy to build the keyer and it is working great! I hope I continue to feel good because I have 2 other kits I've never finished, one is a NM0S HI-PER-MITE CW filter kit and the other is the Pig Rig version 1 QRP transceiver that transmits around 7037 kHz along with a enclosure for it I got from Ten-Tec and also labels that W8DIZ Diz printed and mailed to me. I've had all these for several years, I believe the serial number on the Pig Rig is # 47. I found the receipt for it and I bought it in August 2014. Hopefully I'll have both of them finished soon if my energy level holds out for a while. Anyway, like the subject line says, "Better Late Than Never!" Very 72/73 Cliff, KU4GW 4SQRP # 536

Great work Paul! And a precise example of why we love this hobby, QRP, and the folks just like yourself who stand tall on the shoulders of giants.
Hope that doesn't sound too florid but hey, what's a little heartfelt hyperbole among friends.

I have been obsessing over the lack of power switch or power
indicator on the Hilltopper rigs. Here’s what I did this morning. Your mileage
may vary!
Noticed a nice unclad square of board at the 4SQRP logo on the top panel.
Hmmm, a window!
Noticed it was directly over the reverse polarity diode D1.
I spotted and drilled a 1/8” hole from the back side of the top panel,
ALMOST through the board.
I mounted a 1/8” green LED (from my junk box) under that spot, supported
from the cathode of D1, with a 3.3K dropping resistor running over to the power
jack ground lug. Trial and error until it just fit into the 1/8” hole!
Results shown below. What’s an extra 2 mA among friends? Now I KNOW if the
rig is getting power!
First photo, see the green LED glowing just to the right of the power jack?
Second photo, top panel view. NO hole in the top panel! Of course you can also
poke an LED all the way through the top panel if you wish.

Good propogation for the coming week
Perhaps it is only wishful thinking that we are soon to see the entrance of Solar Cycle 25, but if not, at least it hints that conditions over the next few days are on the upswing.

They have been rapid firing solar storms and solar flares over the past week and finally one has been launched in the Earth-strike zone! According to models the storm will arrive on May 11! ..." "...amateur and emergency radio operators are now enjoying a big bump in the solar flux that is boosting radio propagation back well into the marginal range. Although the bands will remain noisy with low level solar flares, radio propagation on Earth's day side should continue to be decent over the next week or more!..."
