Re: Enjoying 4SQRP Hilltopper 20.
Dave Benson
Chas- The weather behaved nicely here yesterday. I wish I could say the same of band conditions. I went portable yesterday and put up a 40M dipole. There were only a couple CW signals on the band, and I was skunked there. Over the course of an hour, I worked one station- on 20M. He was a SOTA activator, so he could hear me without all the usual man-made noise. I suspect that weekend 'contest fatigue' was also a factor. By contrast, FT8 was roaring merrily along. CW is my first love, but that digital mode might be a more productive bet these days. Just sayin'. Dave- K1SWL

I am on am all the time on 80, 40, and 20 all the time. Just remember it takes very good propagation with anything less than 100 watts. You will here me on 3885. Dwayne. Ka0aam. AAM = ancient amplitude modulation

Chas,
Been watching your Midwest wx condx.
Out here in "earthquake country" we abide but the threat doesn't seem as compelling as yours.
That said we have had more than our share of wild fires.
Both realities offer opportunities for Ham Radio to step up and assist.
Mother Nature bats last.

The only problem with contest days is that each guy is trying that much harder to stamp out the guy next to him. I worked several DX stations during the contest, although I must admit that I was running 50 watts, not 5. Nonetheless, most signals were 599 +20 or +30 where I was.
If the weather behaves tomorrow I’m going to activate a park or two. Today was thunderstorms and driving rain. Not conducive to outdoor activities!

This is a great kit and well worth waiting for. The surface mount parts are already done for you leaving about 30 through hole parts including the toroids to install. The case is pcb material already drilled and marked making for a great finished kit including a nice big speaker inside it! And you can listen to shortwave broadcasts on it like WTWW and WBCQ!

Re: New Kit ?
W6BOW
Steve,
You make excellent, valid points.
Perhaps some day the 4SQRP guys and gals will put out that all purpose rig you desire.
My opinion for what it's worth ….
4SQRP (kits) needn't (and shouldn't) attempt to be all things to all HAMS.
I'm old enough to remember the "AM v SSB" battle. Believe it or not the AM faction called SSB "Silly Side Band". The SSB faction called AM "Ancient Modulation".
Per (in my opinion) the excellent May 2019 Banner "Coming Soon" writeup, "If you have never experienced AM on the ham bands, it is a real treat. Voices sound very natural, and conversations are relaxed without the listener fatigue that comes with distorted SSB. The Nouveau 75 is a great entry level rig to give AM a try."
Emphasis (my own) on, "give AM a try".
Respectfully,
