Kit building

Rob Roberts

Hello all,

I’m looking for advice on what brand of soldering iron and what type/thickness of solder do you recommend for kit building. Right now I’m using a cheap soldering iron from Harbor Freight and practicing on pixies.  Any advice or links would be appreciated.

Let me know how ur loop comes out. 25 years ago at my farm I had a full wave loop on 80 meters. it was a dandy but picked up static like crazy when storms came by. I always had to keep it unhooked and grounded out of the house when not in use hi hi de Paul

No problem, we had checkins and that’s what counts.  I’m going to experiment with a low loop to see what I can do about reducing noise on 80 meters if I can find acceptable attaching points for it..

I jumped over to 80 meters to see if anyone was there after I checked in on 40 meters. Check ins, loosely speaking, were as follows:

NK8O, Chas in KS (NCS)
N0NBD, Paul in KS
N0EVH, John in MO
KV6Z, Bill in OK
N0XM, Mike in KS also reported by e-mail that I was 599 in Wichita

I think Paul took a few check ins prior to me but had storms in the area.

Heard you Bill in my mobile and called you after returning home and after you exchanged with K3ESE. I was using my Bayou Jumper and a Dipole in the attic broadside north and south. The crystal seems also to transmit at more like 7121 so, there are challenges. Maybe next time.

Re: Minion QRP

Carl Gansen

Thank you for the replies...

I'm not really in the market for another QRP.  I couldn't make the case that I *NEED* another
QRP rig with a straight face.

In the latest Michigan QRP Club newsletter there was an interesting review that got me looking for
more information just to satisfy my curiousity.

It is just very interesting to see these new rigs popping up.  Between Arduino(ish) control boards,
inexpensive displays, and DDS chips it's getting easier and easier to offer the latest clever ideas.

I spent the winter tinkering with the Arduino based VFO/49er from last years QST.  It has been
fun and I've learned a lot.

The power out is 5-9w at voltage ?

The front panel indicates a 9 Band(s) while the specs show 10.

Support is what I would be concerned with, but it could be a diamond in the rough !

I didn't find the power output. Looks like it would be about 5 to 10 watts.
