Re: NS40

Jim, N5IB

A few months back I attempted a scratch build of the Tx section of the Bayou Jumper, without success.
The circuit is nearly identical to the NS-40, with some minor differences in L and C values.
I used T50-6 toroid cores, and the inductance values as noted on the BJ schematic, calculating the turns using the calculator on the Kits and Parts web pages.

The problem was that the 2N7000 oscillator stage would quit oscillating when the IRF-510 final transistor was installed.
We occasionally saw this effect in some Bayou Jumpers, and traced it to IRF-510 devices of dodgy parentage. But even individually selected transistors that worked fine in a Bayou Jumper would not work in my toroided Tx strip.

I set it on the shelf and have not re-visited the project.
Would be interested to hear how your attempt turns out.

Jim, N5IB

I remember when I was kitting and shipping them reading about one a guy scratch built but I have no idea where he came up with the coils. Mabe Dave NM0S will jump in or a while back he was kitting them himself... easy kit to build.

I was looking at the NS40 schematic and was wondering if any one has scratch built one with toroids? guess the next question would be would it work if I did?

Re: Elecraft K1

That is one really nice rig and thought it would go for closer to 500.00.
You do not really see these for sale and if I had the funds it would be heading this way.

Retirement and sale

I have been a ham for 57 years and a member of the 4 state group for over 15 years (number 349). I appreciate what the group does to advance the cause of ham radio in general and qrp in particular. Due to all that is involved in advancing age, as well as living in a sub division with HOA restrictions, I have decided to “hang it up” in ham radio. I have three or four items left that I would like to find a good home for. I will post these here beginning today. I think these prices will be listed at under the market value. Elecraft kx1, 20, 30 40 meters, ATU, paddle, power cord, manual, Pelican 1060 case. Asking $295.00, shipped. Payment by USPS MO. Contact:johnk4qq@yahoo.com. Thanks for all the great memories and 73. Hey, guys and gals! There's a new QRP Sprint in town!

Larry Makoski

We start the outdoor QRP Season each year with FYBO in February.

The there's a long wait until the Spring Classics - QRP To The Field and the Cookie Crumble Contest. Then in the heat of the Summer the Bumblebees and the Skeeters take flight. In the Fall we get nutty with our NoGA friends in the Peanut Power Sprint, and then we pack it all away for the Winter.

Until now, that is! Now, thanks to Tim W3ATB we now have the Leaf Peepers QRP Sprint, which is designed to get you out in the glory of Autumn, where the air is crisp, the leaves colorful and the beauty of nature is breathtaking.

This sprint will take place on Saturday, October 6th from 1700 to 2100 UTC. For all the details and to sign up for a Leaf Peeper number, please visit - https://w3atb.com/leaf-peepers-qrp-contest/

So take a brake from raking and get on the air and enjoy the beauty of the season!
