Sorry I couldn’t make it this evening.  It’s a little hard to operate from inside a hospital (as a doc, not a patient!)

Chas, Bill, any interest in going fishing?

And John, as far as using Rohn tower sections, you need to be imaginative.
See the photos that I uploaded.  I purchased 240 ft of (very

Re: 4SQRP Second Sunday Sprint - Sun, 8/12/18 #cal-notice

w2sh@...

Jeff,

I was hearing NØEVH at 339-449 from 0109Z continuously to 0140Z.  During the last few of those minutes he was replying to my repeated calls with QRZ, QRZ W2?, and finally W2S?. I can't remember if at that point he sent Sri or I did.  In any case it was high time for both of us to throw in the towel.

Around 0119Z I heard you calling NØEVH, and like me you failed.  I figured that since we both were unsuccessful maybe I could log you.  I moved a bit lower in frequency to get away from NØEVH's ongoing CQs, and sent de W2SH.  You replied and we exchanged 339s and our stuff, and I logged the QSO at 0221Z.

Then I heard you being called being called by NØEVH and you gave him 339.  After your QSO was finished I moved back up to NØEVH's freq to renew my futile calling.  However I shut up when I heard him in QSO with Gary, KF7WNS, at 0132Z.  Earlier I had worked Gary fairly easily on 20m, now I had my chance to bag him on 40m.  I again moved slightly away from NØEVH's unrequited CQs, and Gary and I completed our QSO at 0135Z, with me giving him 449 and to my pleasant surprise I received a 559.

Condx here in NJ on 20m and 40m were mediocre at best, and wretched on 80m.  But some of us stuck it out for most of the two hours.  No one was more dedicated than NØEVH calling CQ a lot, getting you and Gary on 40m, and perhaps also Bill, KV6Z; however his score has yet to be posted.

72,

Charles (aka Chas), W2SH

I've tended to keep my soapbox comments extremely brief. This month I said

"Worked W2SH and N0EVH - hope they finally heard each other!"

To expand on that a bit... when I started tuning around on 20 and 40 at the start of SSS, I was disappointed to hear no calls "CQ 4S"... now, I have pretty bad noise around here, so I tend to blame that before I start blaming the lack of sunspots :-) But this time, yeah, conditions were really poor. Eventually I backed off the RF gain, engaged noise reduction, and finally started hearing a *faint* call by N0EVH (on 40, around 7.122). It took me listening to several rounds of his CQ to even dig his full call out of the mud.

And when I was about to call him... W2SH started calling him! So then began a good 15 minutes of listening to N0EVH's CQs, followed by W2SH patiently calling him back, to no avail.

Finally signals started getting a little stronger, so I called N0EVH and got a response. Sent him an RST of 339 but wondered if I was being generous :-)

Similar report sent to W2SH, and I think (?!) we completed our QSO amid a lot of noise at this end. So that's the story of my two members worked.

Doc: next SSS, give a few CQs. We'll be listening :-)

SSS Results for August

John Lonigro

I don't know if the band conditions are bad or everyone's on vacation or what, but activity was down slightly for August.  We had 9 people officially enter their scores as of 1300 today.  That's not too bad, but only 6 people actually reported contacts.  Carl, WB0CFF, who is usually at or near the top of the heap, reported a score of 0, with the excuse that he's gone fishing.  I've heard of using fishing poles as antennas, but do people actually use them to go fishing as well?  In the spirit of "turnabout is fair play", maybe someone should try fishing using some Rohn tower sections (hi).  Anyway, for August, Chas W2SH came in first with 15 QSO points, followed by Gary KF7WNS (13) and Bill KV6Z (12).  As usual, Chas will be receiving his August certificate shortly.

For 2018, Carl, WB0CFF, is still in the lead, but it has narrowed a bit due to his fishing expedition.  Carl still has 161 QSO points, followed by Bill KV6Z with 149 and Chas W2SH with 139.  If Carl goes fishing again in September, he could find himself in 2nd or 3rd place, unless he invites Bill and Chas to come along (hi).

The 2018 contest year is 2/3 over.  There is still time for any of the top 8 or 10 people to catch up and make this an exciting race up to the end, unlike the American League Eastern division.

72 until next month,

John, AA0VE
4SQRP Contest Coordinator
