There's a similar device described in the July, 1997 QST that I
almost built one time.

Something like that would be fun and easy to build, but the warning about having long ragchews is important. If your HT has a time-out timer, it would be a good idea to make sure it is turned on. 72, John, AA0VE

Re: What Kit's would be nice for 2021
Here's a 2m FM unit that you can try. Although it's on my website I have never tried it myself....... I thought that some of the locals would enjoy practicing CW but it was a dead end. Really not very complicated, no bells and whistles. I probably have most all the parts if you don't and would share them. You would need a box and some battery power, perhaps a 9V ? Re: A simple frequency spotting modification kit for legacy Bayou Jumpers.
I would like to report how I frequency spot with my original BJ. I have used the methods described in the instructions (putting the crystal across the antenna input and listening for the heterodyne with the key down in RX). Listening to the heterodyne with the key down in RX is easier than removing the antenna connection and the crystal each to time spot. The problem with my BJ is that the heterodyne whistling zones are far apart and the dead zone is wide. I happen to have an old Whiterook Mini-Keyer Model MK-60MB. It contains the Embedded Research chip "Tick-2". First I used it as an iambic keyer to solve the no sidetone issue and it worked well. I then decided to put it in straight key mode while using a straight key. It also worked well. I then noticed that when I held the straight key down in the RX BJ mode I heard a very, loud heterodyne. It is not only loud but the whistling zones are close with a very small dead zone. Using a second rig and having many BJ QSOs I find that I can not only pick out my transmit frequency very accurately (both upper and lower sideband) but I can also repeat the spotting easily without removing the antenna or even adjusting my Atten or Regen. This certainly helps as my BJ has a mild drift. I mention this not to have BJ owners buy a Tick-2 keyer (although if you have one laying around give it a try) but to perhaps figure out why it works so well and develop a simple and better frequency spotting mechanism. I have the original BJ and I of course did the Keyer mod with TIP42G as seen in the new BJ Rev B instruction manual appendix K If any of the builders are interested I would be happy to make any measurements needed to find out why it works. 72 Peter AA2VG

Re: Bayou Jumper underway
Gm Peter Its a great audio filter. It takes power, audio in and out to headphones. I built one stand alone and used a double pole double throw switch as a by pass. this lets you get close then narrow down on a signal. 72 Johnny AC0BQ

Re: Bayou Jumper underway
Mark I have the original white faced BJ which works extremely well. Nevertheless a filter would be helpful. My Hi-Per-Mite should arrive today or tomorrow. I plan on trying it as an external addition first. If that works, I have a plan for putting it in the BJ wooden suitcase. I can let you know how it goes. 73 Peter AA2VG

It seems that their is lots of interest in the Crystal spotter That Jim N5IB has created. We are ordering the parts and will Have them up for sale as soon as the boards arrive. I have attached the kit info below. I would like to thank Jim N5IB for allowing us to use his design. 72 Johnny ACØBQ Check out the 4SQRP website at 4sqrp.com

Re: What Kit's would be nice for 2021
How about converting that NDB receiver into a one watt tunable transceiver for 630 meter band? The 630-meter (or 600-meter) amateur radio band is a frequency band allocated by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to amateur radio operators, and it ranges from 472–479 kHz, That would help create interest in low frequency communications and antenna experimentation. For an antenna I might try making a PVC pipe rolled base coil and a short (5-8 foot) stinger. Something I could hang in my garage and even using two of them to make a right angle dipole. Yes, efficiency will not be great, but think of the fun talking to other area hams (maybe DX the next town over) and maybe make a few new friends as well. de Jeff K9JP

Re: What Kit's would be nice for 2021 (what is a NDB?)
NDB = Non Directional Beacon like the old aircraft beacons that used to identify airports and give old time pilots a signal to follow to the airport or take reading from three or four beacons and use that to tell where they are...... they are slowly wearing out and not being replaced since GPS is much more accurate and receivers are so cheap.
