Balun Designs website gives a table of antenna wire lengths and counterpoise wire recommendations for use with their 9:1 low power unun. 53 ft is easily tunable on 80-10m, and is what I use regularly for travel and the last two FD. Jerry, NK2C

The counterpoise has always for me run from the unun attachment point which has always been above ground and lain on the ground roughly under the antenna, mainly because of convenience. The location of the 50' of coax also has an effect on the system. As you know the bottom of the unun is connected to the shield of the coax and also to the counterpoise. Part of my interest is to have a wide band antenna that can be tuned by an automatic tuner from 2 to 30 Mhz for MARS, and these end fed wires and 9:1 ununs seem to be the best choice for me for now. Also for portable and camping type operations they show potential. Thanks for interest. Darryl, KK5IB

Sounds good Darryl,
Pls tell us if the 25' counterpoise lies on the ground, and if so, is it beneath the antenna. Or is it elevated, and if so, where's it pointed? Obviously the resonance point of a counterpoise is much lower if resting on the ground than if it were elevated above ground, even a few inches above.
Thanks your news.

Good posting, Darryl! I use 50 ft end fed for 40 thru 10 meters and 100 ft end fed for 80 thru 10 meters on the KX2 & KX3. Will give your 56 footer a try with the 9:1 balun. That is really handy for portable / motel operating.

Crosley head phones. No cord. Says 2500 Ohms. Each unit measures 1250 ohms. So they must have been connected in series. Would be nice to go with some old time gear. Was going to put on E-bay but thought someone here might want them. Have no idea for price but am open for offers plus shipping. I got these with a old Atwater Kent radio I bought. It had speaker so I don't need the headphones. I can send a picture. 72 George/W2BPI

End Fed Wire Experiments
Darryl J Kelly
Been doing a lot of experimenting and testing end fed wire antennas especially with small 9:1 ununs.
I have found that a 56' end fed wire, not up to high, 15' to 20' , with a 25' counterpoise fed with 50' of coax and a 9:1 unun will tune from the Cricket frequency up through 10 meters except for 17 meters, tuning with an old LDG Z11 QRP automatic tuner. If you want to run your Cricket but don't have 130' for a dipole or vee, all you need it one support and 56' of wire. Also good for second or third antenna like at my QTH. Hope this is of interest. Thanks for the info Bill. Maybe I'm was just expecting it to be a bit louder. Also I played with the "gimmick capacitor" and it got a bit louder. I guess now, with a good strong signal, I could hear it from a few feet away (though - I'd have to be listening carefully).
I'm pretty certain the resistors are all correct. I had my son check each of them before he soldered them in. Like you, I can't tell always tell the colors, so it's just easier to measure to be sure. Thanks, Dan (KF5CSO)

The volume on mine is rather low but if my shop is quiet I can hear it from twenty feet - if i pay attention. I plug in the "computer speaker" too but if I am going to be near the radio it is loud enough. Do you use your radio with headphones? The simoler radios are best with cans. I think my voltages are closer to what the paper says but those are never dead on. I found a bad capacitor that goes with the "bandswitch" on mine. Did you measure the resistors? I have a lot harder time with the paint used in the color bands and so I use an ohm meter on every one of them. It was much clearer 60 years ago when the parts and the stripes were bigger and there weren't fifty different shades for each color and some colors overlapping others. A navy "blue" stripe .030" wide looks just like a "black" stripe - even under the magnifier. You may discover an out of spec resistor or more likely a resistor in the wrong position. They didn't define "oops" for that one mistake I made once upon a time <evil grin>. 73, Bill KU8H

Ok, after playing with it a bit more I have another question. The receiver is definitely working, but the volume in the speaker seems very very low. In fact it is so low that in a quite room, my son and I had to plug in a amplified external speaker to the headphone jack to hear it well. Is that normal? Also, I noticed that while the Q1 collector voltage looks much better now, the Q3 collector voltage is still only about 5.5 volts instead of the noted 8-9 volts. Just wondering if anyone could provide any further assistance on that. Or perhaps the low volume level and lower voltage is normal.

Last Hunt of the Summer Season 2017
Dale Putnam
The LAST hunt of the 2017 Summer Season, will happen the last day of Aug. (local time).
Are you ready? Will you be hunting in the 20 acre woods with the best Hounds in the Country? They are good. Can you put your hands on a pelt from either the WyLee western FOX, WC7S, or the
Sly yet Intrepid, Wi FOX, NK9G? They will be in the 20 acre woods, between 14.050 and 14.070
Aug 31, at 7pm MT or 0100z. FOX will be calling "FOX u" or "FOX d" working split for beginning, about 1 khz or so, please spread out.
Place your call in a clear spot, (take a shot at the FOX) and grab a pelt, in a hurry, with the exchange being: RST, State or Prov, name, power (and not more than 5 watts please.) i.e. the Western FOX will send: "call RST WY LEE 5 bk" Then you send "R rst State name pwr bk" IF the Prop Princess is smiling on us, it goes very quick. ONE NOTE: DO NOT let the speed of the FOX intimidate you, if you are happy with cw speed of slower than he is going, call anyway!! They will slow down for you, no problem. Altho, it will be the same exchange, with only the rst changing maybe from the FOX.
The FOX have keen ears, but only two of them, and they got confused with everyone calling on top of one another.
And a confused FOX ear is simply not pretty.
IF you like the Summer Season, you'll love the Winter Season, in the 40 and 80 acre woods. We'll have to bribe the Game Warden, to see when, so keep an eye to the web page around the end of October.. or first of Nov. To not miss the start.
Check out the standings at www. qrpfoxhunt.org and make a plan... to be there, to enjoy the fastest 90 minutes in radio, at the LAST hunt of the 2017 Summer Season.
Have a great day,

Re: Ozark Patrol help needed
Not familiar with Ozark Patrol (I might have to get one to play with) but here are my thoughts: 1. The base bias on Q1 is a bit low but probably not a problem at this point. Does V(Q1b) vary with the REGEN control (R4)? 2. I would check the voltage along the component chain leading to Q1 - i.e. junction of R1 and R2, R2 and L1a. If Q1 was 'off' the voltage on Q1c would be a bit less than battery voltage. You are reading 0V so it, as Mike commented, sounds like you either have a short on Q1c or a lack of continuity somewhere along the string from the battery to Q1c. So just keep looking at voltages and staring at the schematic. Something is amiss - probably a bad solder joint. Good luck! 73 Bob Groh, WA2CKY

Re: Ozark Patrol help needed
Mike WA8BXN
Hi Dan,
I would disconnect power and with an ohm meter measure resistance of Q1 collector to ground. If its real close to 0 ohms, I would suspect a short in C1. If not close to 0 ohms I would suspect a problem with L1. Either not soldered properly or wires bit connected to proper places. 73/72- Mike WA8BXN From: 4sqrp@yahoogroups.com <4sqrp@yahoogroups.com> on behalf of dv1900@gmail.com [4sqrp] <4sqrp@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Saturday, August 26, 2017 9:47 AM To: 4sqrp@yahoogroups.com Subject: [4sqrp] Ozark Patrol help needed My son has just completed the Ozark Patrol kit, however it doesn't appear to be working properly. When we power it on, there is a slight hiss from the speaker, however turning the regen knob or tuning knobs doesnt really change anything. Moving on to the voltages listed in the instructions this is what I measured: Battery voltage - 9.35 volts I will put the voltage listed in the instructions in parentheses at the end just for reference Emitter Q1 - 0v (0v) Base Q1 - .52v (.65v) Collector Q1 - 0v (3-5v) Base Q2 - .61v (.65v) Collector Q2 - 3.41v (3v) Emitter Q3 - 2.74v (2.5v) Collector Q3 - 5.48v (8-9v) Ok, so something is clearly wrong on collector of q1 and collector of q3 ... the others seem close to me. Looking at the schematic, I measured the voltage before R1 (around 9v) and between R1 and R2 (around 4.5v), but then the voltage drops to 0. I have looked at the basic stuff (correct components and diode orientation / cold solder / bridges - that's not to say I didn't miss something), but I was wondering if anyone might have any suggestions on where to focus my attention.
