Re: MFJ 9200

Below is a link to the owners manual...

Strangely enough, MFJ doesn't sell a MFJ-9200 by itself...it comes with one of the band modules...I.E. MFJ-9215/20/40 etc.   That is why you won't find it by itself.

Also, take note, each module has an initial tuning procedure for best reception and here is a link to that PDF file with the information...

I own one with all the modules and aside from having to exchange modules to change bands I like using it.  TX output is dependent on input voltage and mine will exceed 5 watts at 13 VDC.

Also, if you have the ability to ramp down the voltage when tuning up you antenna system, do so.  The unit is tough but high SWR will cause the final to overheat...and you can feel it through the case when it starts getting hot.   I partially smoked mine while playing with an End-Fed random wire and the output dropped to about 1 watt...BUT, after some back and forth with MFJ about what it should be putting out they replaced the final for the cost of shipping AND did so quickly.  Now I keep and eye/finger on the case to monitor the heat.

Anyway, I have enjoyed mine and made several contacts on it.  Of course your mileage may vary but for the cost, IMHO, it is a nice little unit.

Hope this helps, 73s

Conversion of 80M LPF to 40M?

k9jp.radio@...

Greetings,

Is it possible to convert the current 80 meter LP filter to 40 meters?  Could one just short/solder bridge some of the inductors, or replace them with toroids?

Your thoughts and suggestion appreciated.

Cricket with 3560 Crystal from KC9ON

Wayne Steury

Since I modified my Cricket the receiver seemed off frequency enough to make it some difficult. Well, I changed everything back to the regular way it was given in the original.  BUT I ordered from KC9ON a tall crystal that he sells for 3560 KHZ. It works great and I just made a good QSO with clear reception. I am very happy with this new crystal. My Cricket puts out about 6/10 watt on 3560 and about 8/10 on 3579 (tall crystal that came with the kit). I use the Crystal switch that John KC9ON sells.   https://kc9on.com/store/parts/hc-49u-tall-crystals/

So far it's working with 3535 3550 3560 and 3579 - all HC49/s small cases, have not seen any startup issues.  Putting the 2 pin headers in those cap positions really helped out.

>How much power does it make with the small crystal?
Power is much lower, about slightly less than 1/2W.  Currently using an MFJ949 for measurement but really need to swap it out with my Autek meter as the MFJ accuracy is horrid in the low range.

>Does Q2 get hot?
I will leave that with a "it all depends".  If you do about 60 seconds of normal keying at 10WPM, such as calling CQ, I have not felt any heat. Probably the duty cycle is enough to keep it cool.  But if you drop your shoe on the key it starts to get hot to the touch after about 10 seconds into a dummy load. I haven't left my shoe on the key any longer than that but would assume by 30 seconds full key down magic smoke will appear.

>Does it stay in Class E?
Probably not (see above).  Someone told me of a mod to one of the bias resistors around Q2.  I have not tried this mod yet and don't know if it's better or worse.  I'm off the bench for  summer activities so it may be a while before I starting playing around again.

Another thing I have not done yet is to measure the signal sensitivity.

Overall it's an interesting, but challenging, circuit.  I know the manual states it was a minimalist design and built for a specific purpose but us hackers will be hackers :)

For the headers/sockets........
I don't plan on re-selling them as they are very cheap (penny candy).  However, when someone asks I do drop a few samples in an order when I have extras (usually do).  I get them from TaydaElectronics.com  Their shipping costs are pretty reasonable as well.  I think they are also on Ebay as Tayda2009.   Below are the part numbers:

40 pin breakway header A-197 $.15 - One is enough for 13 crystals.
3 pin straight female header A-1069 $.04
3 pin Right Angle female header A-1028 $.09
(A header and 10 sockets comes out to around $2.07 shipped from them - hard to beat!)

The clear Mini-Yack enclosure was a gift from VE3FWF.  He does not produce them commercially but his local library is lucky enough to have a laser cutter he has occasional access to.  He has also done ones for the Chinese Pixie and Super RM Rockmite.  The software is from www.makercase.com and his current enclosures are available from several places on my web site but here is a direct link to the zip file:   http://kc9on.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/VE3FWF-Enclosures.zip

If anyone is interested I have a Super RM Rockmite enclosure made from hardboard I promised to give away and will send to the first U.S. person to e-mail me off list (Foreign shipping starts at a whopping $9.50 and up.... Ouch!).  You can see a picture of the hardboard version here: http://kc9on.com/ham-radio/qrp-radios/chinese-qrp-kits-2/chinese-super-rm-rockmite-aka-octopus/

Dear OM Wayne,

Physically I am located at least a kilomile from you and the 4SQRP heartland.  Yet over the years you and I have communicated a great deal, both on the air and by e-mail, on a variety of subjects and shared interests.

And, understandably so, I am deeply grieved to learn of this serious loss and the void it has suddenly created in your life.  But over time your sadness will gradually be displaced, for it will be increasingly replaced by the increased memories of those happy times you were so lucky to have Shirley a part of you and you a part of her.

You are both now in my prayers and will be especially 62 hours hence when I celebrate the Anglican communion.

With a heartfelt 72,

Charles,  W2SH

Re: FT8

Nick-WA5BDU

I made my first FT8 QSO a few days ago. I jokingly said I didn't know whether to be proud or ashamed. :-)

For downloads, you mostly need the one package. Everything is there. I did make the mistake of downloading the *current* revision instead of the latest beta, which is the one that has FT8. I did download another recommended utility that's supposed to keep my PC's time pretty close to actual.

Normally used frequencies for each mode on each band are built in to the software, which is handy. So you just need to set your TX levels and know how to set up the RX.  (USB, broad BW, AGC off ...)

I did some monitoring for a while and checked some YouTube videos on how to make it work. But it's not too difficult.

Going in, I wondered if there was much or any human action required to make QSOs. The answer is, not too much, but you do have to, or get to, initiate the QSO.

I can't very well complain about QSOs with very minimal content, since I do like contests and I do try to work DXpeditions. Most of the FT8 QSOs just exchange callsigns and grid squares and an automatic signal report in dB above or below the noise level. It would be nice to add your name or power level or something. There is a way to do that but I'm not sure how much it's done.

I need to play with it a lot more before I get good at it.

Nick, WA5BDU

Wayne,

Oh Wayne, so sad to get this sad news.  Of course, you know that Patsy and I are thinking of you in this terrible moment.  We just met Shirley once out at a Big Brutus Bash.  Her and Patsy really hit it off and stayed in contact for quite some time.  Over time what with our struggles with out health conditions their exchange of emails slacked off.  However when I told the sad news to her just now she was taken aback and sadden.

Again our thoughts are with you and yours in this difficult time.
