Inexpensive Chinese DDS and the SS40HT/SS40TX
I'm uploading a PDf file with what documentation is available from the
Chinese on the particular little DDS VFO I bought off eBay for less than $40. It came with almost no information/instructions, but with a lot of internet searching and my own experimenting with one, I've been able to piece together enough information to make one work reliably. I've also successfully interfaced it with the SS40HT receiver and with the help of its original designer Jim Kortge, K8IQY, also had success with the SS40TX in it's originally intended transceive mode with the SS40HT/RX. I've compiled the DDS information along with my own notes interpreting the Chinese English and added an appendix to the DDS instructions with details on how to interface it with the SS40 pair. All the information I have on the DDS is contained in this document and I won't be available to answer further questions for some time due to vacation travel - I'll be off the beaten path and will have very little internet access for much of the trip. Hopefully the file will explain things sufficiently for those of you that have the SS40HT and SS40TX and want to hook up a DDS VFO in place of the original VXO to give a bit more tuning range without having to switch out the crystals in the VXO as some of you have already done. Our club operates under two categories. The 100 watt SSB stations which were using the call of our club president KK4ICU with 3A AL. We we were all set up at Plainview High School and adjacent Civic Center in Rainsville, Alabama, this is about 50 miles SW of Chattanooga, TN. My station, 5 Watt CW operating under the club call W4GBR 1A AL. I set up a 280' sloping delta loop with an average elevation of about 40'. It was fed with 300 Ohm twin lead to a LDG Z-11 Pro II tuner and a KX3. My partner was Tom KC5UN, we switched off to give each other a break every so often which worked out well. Calling CQ did not work out well, as usual, so we used the S&P method. Here's the QRP band-QSO breakdown:
As always FD is a fun experience. I did not have any trouble sleeping Sunday night!

Great job! I also bolted the pair together and made 20+ contacts. It makes a very nice combo. Your packaging looks great and the dds VFO is just what it needs. Care to share any info on the dds vfo? Well, the "Jayhawker" (SS40 twins packaged similar to a Bayou Jumper and the VXO replaced with a cheap Chinese $35 DDS VFO) is finally operational and had it's first contact this morning with Don, WB6BEE on 7.025MHz at 12:54 UTC. Antenna was a PAR EndFedZ 40-20-10 meter antenna up maybe 20 feet at it's highest point. I was also copied by W6QR in Torrance, CA but I'd already signed and didn't work him. Heard him talking to WB6BEE about my signal being 559 in Torrance though before I pulled the antenna (thunderstorms in the area again).

Looking for one more SS40HT receiver (SS40TX transmitter a plus but not
necessary) - built or unbuilt (preferrably unbuilt) for a reasonable price to use for DDS documentation experiment. Please reply off list if you have one. Jim Sheldon, W0EB (w0eb (at) cox.net)

Darryl,
I would be interested in learning a little more about your 205 ft center fed with the 9:1 balun. Would you mind sharing some information? Thank you, Dave, KD9VT

Well my day started out with good intentions BUT after checking the bands with http://dxcluster.ha8tks.hu/rbn/ All I saw was shoulder to shoulder OPs...looked like contesting to me...Which...ARRL says FD isn't a contest but IMHO I couldn't tell the difference having listened to allot of stations throughout the day...SO, I spent my time on the non-Field Day bands...much less crowded and quieter... Kudos to those who waded those crowded waters... Sent from my iPad Mini Rocky Weeks, AF5AF East Arkansas Fur Takers, FTA Chap 29B

Re: 4sqrp Reflector
I operated 1A portable, in the woods abt 1/4 mile from my home in Southside Va. I used kx1, kx2 and end fed, trapped multiband antenna. I operated only the last 4 hours on Sunday. I really wanted simplicity of the kx1 to work, but it wasn't up to the crowded conditions around 1400z, so I switched to the kx2. What a difference! With the exception of on-frequency QRM, the kx2 eliminated adjacent station interference. I logged 89 QSO's on 40m and 20m. By 1800z crowding had reduced to the point that I probably could have returned to the kx1, but I was enjoying the armchair copy. I was able to work stations from 10 to 30 WPM, well above my comfort speed of 20. I probably could have logged more, but the total experience was enhanced by a good cigar and a hot carafe of coffee. I hope everyone took advantage of the great wx and band conditions.

I operated about three hours from home, 50 contacts and 33 sections, QRP CW 5 watts into my 205' center fed antenna and the new 9:1 balun, 40, 20 and 15 meters, CA, FL, NH, MAR, PA, NY, NM, WY, CO, MT, plus most of the close in states. One of my local clubs rented a house on a lake but I didn't get to go with them, still recovering from double pneumonia.
