Re: Facebook

Hi,

Determined busybodies can hack *anything* - even your home. Don't bother to put your financials on facebook. I have a facebook account and I look at what my family - siblings, cousins, children, grandchildren, great gandchildren, etc are doing. Until recently (when I learned to hog tie facebook) I looked at it once every month or two. Now it is more like weekly (some say weakly). I still call it "in your face book".

We probably don't need yet another facebook forum. The email is more convenient to use and more reliable. I still use the phone and snail mail for that matter and they are still as good as they ever were. Yes..those can be and are hacked too. The whole world is made of dirt and you are going to get some on you every day. Brush it off and keep on going.

I use Facebook quite a bit - both to keep tabs on family and to check the many wood working forums I belong to as well as a few radio and ham radio forums I belong to. I don't worry about hacking - why would someone want to hack my account?  I guess they could and certainly some people do to the great detriment of the people hacked (who can essentially lose control over their Facebook page).

I do find the forum entirely satisfactory for my uses and basically wouldn't see any need to have a Facebook page.  And, quite selfishly, I think the group is big enough as it is!

Hello Paul
I will do my best to explain Brutus Bash.

The clubs founding Fathers, Terry Fletcher, Bart  Lawson, Gene Salisbury (SK) and Joe Porter, decided many years ago (10 or so?) To get together in the fall and have a radio outing, and they called it "The Brutus Bash".
I may have missed some of the originals, if so I hope someone will fill in for me.

Big Brutus is a retired coal shovel that was used for strip mining in SE Kansas a few miles west of Pittsburgh Kansas, actually located in West Mineral KS.
Just search the www for BIG BRUTUS.

It's a beautiful  little quite historical site that is very radio friendly for portable QRP ops to set up antennas and play radio.
We have had big crowds, small crowds and in between crowds, but we have always had a lot of good Qrp FUN!!

I hope this explains it for you.

Gang,
About 1600Z, the sun unleashed another X9 solar flare. The earth is being
showered with electrons, protons (it was also a proton flare) and ionizing
radiation. This has highly ionized the D-layer for total HF absorption and
a total HF blackout.

A total blackout over North America looks like this:
http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/communities/radio-communications

On the air, all you will hear is noise, and if you listen for a minute or
so, it will go up and down in intensity, somewhat like the sound of waves on
a beach, the effects of the Type IV solar storm in progress. These are
massive amounts of electrons spiraling along the sun's magnetic field lines
until they crash into the Earth's magnetic field and ionosphere. So if you
can't make a QSO (and you won't right now), listen for a minute to at least
hear and appreciate the physics of a solar storm.

The possible good news is if the ionizing radiation subsides and allows the
D-layer to recover in a few hours, the E/F layers will remain highly ionized
for some possible great propagation towards the end of local daylight hours
and into sunset. This will temporarily boost the solar flux and MUF, and
might persist into tomorrow (Monday).

The other good news is today's X-class flare was on the extreme limb of the
sun, meaning the resulting CME and shockwave is not Earth directed to
trigger geomagnetic storms as the last X9 flare last week did. So once the
current solar storm subsides, the bands will return to normal, and hopefully
a bit better than normal.

Not bad for a "quiet sun," eh?

GA all,
As John is busy I offered to do a final reminder on his behalf...
I'm taking the opportunity to remind everyone one more time that the Second Sunday
Sprint is this evening, from 7:00-9:00 pm (CDT). Go to 4SQRP.com
(4SQRP On Air Activities) to find the rules, which haven't changed
recently. Tally your score and enter it at qrpcontest.com/4sqrp. Do
that by Tuesday night at the latest. John plans to report the winner for
September, as well as the standings for the year-long part of the
contest this Wednesday. Counting today, there are merely 4 Second Sunday Sprints left
for 2017. Where does the time go?
