Dale,

The summer rules are here.  Good explanation.

http://www.qrpfoxhunt.org/summer_rules.htm

The summer FOXTRAVAGANZA is different only in that there will be as many summer foxes operating as possible.  Tune through the hunting area and work as many as you can.  Lots of fun.  Join us and practice for the winter hunts.

SSS is this Sunday

John Lonigro

I happen to have a few minutes this morning and thought I'd take the opportunity to remind everyone one more time that the Second Sunday Sprint is this Sunday evening, from 7:00-9:00 pm (CDT). Go to 4SQRP.com (4SQRP On Air Activities) to find the rules, which haven't changed recently. Tally your score and enter it at qrpcontest.com/4sqrp. Do that by Tuesday night at the latest. I plan to report the winner for September, as well as the standings for the year-long part of the contest. Counting Sunday, there are merely 4 Second Sunday Sprints left for 2017. Where does the time go?

I know there is a conflict between the SSS (Second Sunday Sprint) and
the BBB (Big Brutus Bash), but it can't be helped. At least BBB should
be finished well before the SSS starts (7:00-9:00 CDT).

Speaking of conflicts, I will be busy this entire weekend with the MS150
bike ride. Don't expect any reminders after Friday morning at the
latest. Assuming I survive the ride, I will tally the scores by
Wednesday, as usual.

So let's make this both your reminder to participate in the Sprint and
to send in your score.

I can't tell you what the Board may or may not be considering but nothing has been mentioned to the 4SQRP List Moderators.

I help with managing several lists hosted on Yahoo, Google, and private Mailman (Linux) servers. All have their pros and cons. None are truly "free". In exchange for not handing over any cold, hard cash, you agree to accept advertising, etc. on any of the "free" services. Mostly, you get to choose whether it's Yahoo or Google that mines your information.

My LongWire Antenna.  Design Info based on this   W8JI article.

His information is available on his website,  and is extensive and easy to read.

my system is build from his  Long-Wire  "Basic Simple System"   on this page  .

and a very informative analysis of counter-poise on this page

...
and  there is  much, much more.

Documentation for W8JI Long Wire Antenna  (click for PDF version of this page )

My   W8JI LongWire    is 180 to 225 ft long, up at 17 ft, running in the shape of "Z",

now trimmed  to aprox. 188 ft,
and connected to the coax via a Current Balun to keep RF out of the shack.
Current Balun 1:1 is connected to 52 Ohm coax is 17' long.

The very long-wire maintains odd-quarter wave-lengths for target bands so no impedance matching Balun is required.   It has aprox. 5.5 quarter-wavelengths on 40M and aprox. 11.3 quarter-wavelengths on 20M. The Antenna Tuner is a simple HeathKit HFT-9 QRP ( cap-coil-cap double-"L" )which is the Standard Antenna Tuner design used by everybody.
The Long-Wire  zig-zags across the house and back yard
with angles tighter than 90 degrees.

To Adjust for Lowest SWR  on 40M and 20M,
I roll up the far end of the antenna about 6' at a time, into a simple hand-loop. This adjustment gathered fist sized loop  is taped securely
and hooked on my fence at 5' off ground.
Then I go into the shack, and vary the antenna-tunner, until lowest SWR.

Certain antenna lengths give 10Mhz, 14Mhz, 18Mhz,
while the standard adjusted length (188 ft) gives 3.5Mhz, 7Mhz, 10Mhz, 14Mhz
at near  1:1 at the Antenna-Tuner.
80M tunes narrowly.  40M  and  20M tune broadly,  both 1:1 .

Results:
I run 1 W QRPp/CW into the Long-Wire,
and have worked all states, and half of Europe, and Hawaii,
with my HW-8  1977  tranceiver.
It Seems to be efficient enough for my  ONE WATT  20M  system.

GC_W8JI_Counter-Poise_.gif

The Counterpoise wire runs down from the 17' pole,
then along the brick side of the house,
and attaches to the back fence ,  ungrounded.
My counter-poise is about 20' long, and not grounded at the antenna.
Ideally it would be a few feet of the ground, but mine is 10' up, 20' long.

The Counterpoise is not grounded to the earth
and only  grounded to the transceiver system.
Only the Coax Sheild is grounded,  and only  in the shack, at the Antenna-Tuner,
along with the normal shack equipment grounds, and a very close ground rod.
This Long-Wire is grounded only at the connection of the coax to the antenna tuner,
grounded ONLY inside the shack, right at the tuner.

The Counterpoise is positioned off the feed-end of the "Z" shaped LongWire.

The  1:1 Current Balun has been placed outside, at 17'
where the Long-Wire and the counter-poise are attached.
RF in shack is minimal.
