Re: QSTs (2015, 2016, 2017) - free for cost of shipping
I give all of mine to the local library at the end of the year when I’m done with them. Head librarian is a ham but not an ARRL member so they all get bound up a year at a time and made available for check out.

I had complete QST's back to 1969 when I decided to give them away to make room in my shack for the installation of a new furnace. I took several years of them to local ham swap meets and I could not give them away! I like other ARRL members, find little need for them now with the ability to acquire reference information from ARRL on-line. My wife and I took them to the curb on recycle day, and got rid of everyone of them. Kind of sad I think, but that is the way it is. I continue to get the printed copy of QST; I read them thoroughly, keep one years worth, and then add one the newest one and pitch the oldest. I find reading QST on-line not be to my liking. 73, Karl, KO8S

Intriguing PCB holder on Amazon
Hi all,
I was doing some window shopping at Amazon and came across this: https://www.amazon.com/Toolour-Pieces-Circuit-Board-Holder/dp/B07TDGT21L/ref=pd_di_sccai_1/141-0245591-8116743?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B07TDGT21L&pd_rd_r=7b0da477-6da5-44bc-a310-0cadc5342c46&pd_rd_w=sxl4t&pd_rd_wg=BWTHC&pf_rd_p=c9443270-b914-4430-a90b-72e3e7e784e0&pf_rd_r=60J8V780JFKXTPYVWZYK&psc=1&refRID=60J8V780JFKXTPYVWZYK Has anyone tried these? They look cool and you can get flexible arms to hold your PCB up higher and change the orientation of the board. Any feedback god, bad or indifferent would be appreciate any info. Re: QSTs (2015, 2016, 2017) - free for cost of shipping
What ever happened to the kids and sometimes adults getting onto the hobby or even those who were not ARRL members who in the past clamored for the recent and even old copies of QST, 73, CQ, etc? We used to haul them home and go through them like Radio Shack and Heathkit catalogs devouring every word and dreaming of someday owning those long forgotten rigs or building some of the kits and projects that were available but not on our budget. Is no one curious or can they all afford the back issue CDs or going through the complicated process of the ARRL archives to find something fun or interesting? Just wondering.

When in model RC airplane building a few years ago even at my mid age I enjoyed any older issues of the modeling mags I could scrounge up to see what had been done before and what was happening on the “new” scene. Those older mags are great bathroom reading fodder or read just when I was just too tired or lazy to go to the shack and make a contact or repair one of my plane wrecks. I still take my one or two year old copies of ham mags to the club and most of the time they sit there. There aren’t that many mags being printed anymore so the piles I bring are even much smaller than years ago. They are FREE too! I just don’t get it. Wow! As I read through all of my accumulated messages, I read the messages between between you and some other hams about how nobody wants the QST magazines and I, too, was amazed that they are still around. I'll take them...will get your address off of Zed and send you the $15.50 in tomorrow's mail, or if you do PayPal, invoice me at bigusmith@... EuGene Smith, KA5NLY P.O. Box 1110 Clinton, AR 72031

Re: QSTs (2015, 2016, 2017) - free for cost of shipping
Thanks for all the comments. Normally (i.e. pre-Covid) when our local library was open - I would take ALL my old magazines there and recycle them. But alas for now and probably for the next 6 months or so, that is NOT an option. As you all have commented no one seems to want them. Oh, well, I tried. I will probably slide them under the bed and wait 6 months or so for the world to start to get back to normal. Meanwhile I'll just try some other avenues. Absolutely hate to just trash them. FYI paper is NOT recyclable around here. Sad but a reality. 73 Bob, WA2CKY

I have seen a few “practice kits” with a PCB and 50-60 parts to solder on..... perhaps 4S would develop a SMT learning kit along with some Hints & Kinks...... it’s here and we need to deal with it.

Re: QSTs (2015, 2016, 2017) - free for cost of shipping
Well David, while it’s true ARRL members can get all back issues of QST and more online I was surprised that non members didn’t show any interest at all. I belong to 5 clubs (250+ Hams) in my area and with less than 25% of Hams actually getting the QST publication I was naive enough to think that they would be interested ! There’s something wrong with that picture.

Clubs with newsletters like the 4S Banner and others, some even with printed and mailed copies, are a tremendous source of information AND education, yet the FREE aspect doesn’t seem to entice them to read the offerings..... I really don’t understand. John

Re: 4SQRP] 30 Meter Hilltopper Kit & More

Andy
interesting thoughts. with some key parts like Si5351a PLL's only available in SMD form we are seeing more hybrid kits, with these critters pre-installed. note QRP Labs is planning a smaller version of QCX with the builder only having to install through hole parts. I did look over a few of my SMD successes -- let's see a frequency counter to the NC2030 that was nearly all surface mount. Maybe my biggest SMD wonder was homebrewing a WBR regen receiver (which BTW is a wonderful 40m CW/SSB receiver) that needed a small value varactor. i had gotten a very tiny sample, mounted it to a little board made for some IC form factor that fit - and it let me attach leads to it. could I do it again? maybe. am I am looking forward to maybe replacing a bad Si5351a on my original QCX (when and if I order one)? i guess I should be up to the challenge but it might take some patient effort. some of us have deep enough stashes of thru hole parts, but the opportunity to mount a few SMD parts for a project (on media that can accept them) is worthwhile. or build something with tubes and real big components. 73 CUL curt wb8yyy

Either take them to your local club after pandemic, or recycle them. They should be available as full issues on line, so nothing lost. Spend the $15 elsewhere.
