Re: What's On Your Bench?

Curt

Nice thread!  Motivating.

Our local club build of v4 ubitx delayed a host of projects - so just getting back.  It was nifty to hang out with more than 2 dozen builders, many who had never built a rig before.  Of course the v4 needs a lot of care - mods for spurs etc.  Mine has a nifty AGC made from an LED and a photoresistor that works amazing (and makes light!).

Just a couple days ago replaced a volume pot on a cheap reproduction AM/FM radio.  Why do I mention this?  A lot of disassembly to get to it.  Board with a few cheap parts on it buried inside -- wow the sound of a big speaker in a wood cabinet - this thing sounds great (the original pot was always bad).

Built a QCX+ and companion PA for 80m -- very nice rig and the new version is easier with larger part spacing.

Put up the short 250+ foot Beverage that just fits in my yard - at times it is amazing, and often gentler on the ears.

Turned on my WBR regen for 40m - this thing is amazing even though it does not look like much.  I can copy CW signals well enough to QSO with it.  One of a few regens homebrewed -- maybe someday I can graduate to superhets - I have a HYCAS and a few other modules sitting on a breadboard -- and I need to finish assembly of the now-obsolete PHSNA that is mostly assembled.

I am fixing a variable voltage power supply built from QST nearly 40 years ago - it never would reach above 9 volts so maybe a bad lm317 we will see.

Have some stuff gathered for a tube Tx to 'replace' the xtal controlled tuna-tin+mosfet I used with my first receiver.

enjoy your efforts.

Dang, those where the days... open chassis with upwards of 430VDC floating around; seems insane now, but back then it was SOP.
I remember the spark gap stuff my Uncle had. Rotary SG throwing around 1000V out in the open; Oh Yah! (Edit - No I'm not that old, but I saw old photos - but can you imagine how cool (and dangerous that was!)

I am currently playing with an Arduino solution to my dehumidifiers bad mother board. In development stage at this point.
So far I have the Arduino reading a DHT11 and displaying the results. The rest shouldn't be too hard.

Lee,

What a great job ... times three - you're already in serial production!

For anyone who's interested in the original Philmore NT-200 kit manual to see how accurate Lee's replica is, which is well worth the look back into The World That Time Forgot, here's a couple of links to the PDF of the same scan of the manual (redundancy is the enemy of BitRot!):

Re: What's On Your Bench?

Jerome Wysocki

Hi Lee,
You certainly did a great job in constructing your clone of the Philmore Xmtr and power supply. You could probably make some good part time money offering for sale the following options for the Philmore.
1. A bare, undrilled chassis. 2. A bare, drilled chassis. 3. A bare, drilled, painted chassis. 4. A complete kit, with drilled, painted chassis, and all parts.
I believe there is a market out there that might be sufficient to make it worthwhile. I know someone did exactly that for the popular Ameco AC-1, 6V6 Xmtr. The Philmore design is superior to the AC-1. You might even consider such options as above, with the AC-1, as a clone.
