Re: 4SQRP] 30 Meter Hilltopper Kit & More
I think that the problem with SMT kits will be in IDing the various components at the build stage.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
I have only built a few projects that require SMT and got the hang of it quickly but at 77 I confess that my eyes are not quite what they used to be AND from what I’ve read some parts actually don’t have any ID on them so it’s difficult for the kitter and the kit builder. Perhaps a dot of color and separate packages for caps and resistors ? One does need some steady hands and eye assistance but the results are worth the effort. John

Great question, Woody!

I'll toss my thoughts in the jar as well - should make the mud that much more rich! hihihi I use a Weller WES51 soldering iron with an analog temp dial on the front. For SMD work from 1206 to 0403, and for through-hole assembly, I use 650° F and Radio Shack 62/36/2 silver bearing solder. I sometimes have to take the temp to 700 or 750, or switch from a thin pencil to a larger chisel tip in order to attach parts to copper-fill grounds that don't have thermal relief pads. I try to keep the heat to a 2 second count at most and will tweak the temp and/or the tip to keep that approximate rhythm. I hope that's useful. 73, Andy, KG5RKP

4SQRP] 30 Meter Hilltopper Kit & More
For whats worth, not much probably !
I’d love to see them complete-everything-you-need SMD Kit Form Once even the oldest or novice ham practices in tranquil surrounding i think even they would become accomplished constructors Everythings getting smaller in footprint in our world so why not be the folks to give confidence in abundance as a club designing state-of-the-art SMDKits ? OR BRINGING BACK KITTED things Like Norcal Sierra - NC-20/30/40 A new “ Build It Your Complete Kit Of Needed Bits “ to construct a small-footprint “ Bug “ ! Loads ! Of Options I myself have put out the idea many a time for a club to do-things with the north ottawa qrp club ( micro model only ) touch-paddle With things that could be added etc Alas to no avail put down like a horse no longer required for the job This is only thought on the SMD package but if folks had a lil’ smt tool supply along with their everyday soldering tools Then kits would more requested & tried as the fear factor would deminish 72’s 73’s Andy -GM0NWI

Re: Soldering Iron Temperature
WB9YZU
I would bet there was volumes of scientific evidence to support that claim ;)
What it would do is increase the mass the element would need to heat. I'm not sure about the premature failure, but it would take longer to come up to temp, and longer to cool down. Solder tips were the high volume items, not the heating element. They were simple copper or steel tips with little or no cladding; they would be eaten away pretty quickly. On my old Weller guns, I don't even bother to buy tips anymore, I just strip a piece of left over #12 Solid. They seem to last as long ;) The controlled 40W Station is still using the same tip it had when I got it 15 years ago. -- , Ron WB9YZU

Re: What is a QRP Ozark 17 transceiver?
Thanks, Johnny.
I was thinking about buying a dead one that is listed on FleaBag (aka, eBay), but it sounds like it would be very difficult to work on it, and likely more trouble than it's worth. I bet I can find a nice 17 meter qrp xcvr kit, either here in the 4SQRP Store or from QRPme, and not have the hassle of trying to fix a busted one. Also the one that is for sale is almost $47 with shipping and I can most likely get a new kit for about that cost or less. Yep, I will pass on that QRP Boat Anchor!! Thanks again! EuGene, KA5NLY
