Hi,

We should setup our radios for whatever we prefer. If there is no adjustment as Curt has mentioned we should use whatever that produces. I have one that is not adjustable and is 600 Hz. I dial the incoming signal to 600 Hz on my waterfall and *go*. I may install RIT on the rig to get me to my preferred 500 Hz. More likely I have better things to do so 600 it is.

My guess is our preferences mostly fit between 650 and 750 Hz.  Note if a rig isn't adjustable,  the offset between the transmitter and our favorite pitch gives our offset error.

I am not wanting to cause a long thread of responses to my question, but here it goes...

A few years ago when the Hi-Per-Mite was first released, there considerable discussion of the ideal or preferred tone frequency for cw.

Does know or remember the results of that discussion ?

What was the majority preference for tone freq. ?

Honestly a varactor does not seem to be a huge impact on regen stability,  as these things can receive with high fidelity.  the varactor Q will vary some with bias but I am doubting any noticeable impact. 

My homebrew WBR has commercial varactors, and seems sharper than these receivers with makeshift varactors, but its only a coarse observation.

Has anyone measured their regens with a audio FFT like spectrogram?

note a sidetone circuit can operate in parallel if you don't insist it come through your headphones.  I am a bit surprised they did not leave space on the board for sidetone circuitry, but needless to say it should fit easily inside the hobby lobby box.

I've found that to be a frequent comment.
 It often is from another op who isn't used to working rockbound stations.

You hear a CQ, plug in the closest crystal you have and answer
Other op hears you close by and replies but says you were off frequency
Other op retunes to your frequency
You still hear him in the wide Rx
You reply
He says "OK you're right on now" never realizing you didn't touch a thing  :^))

I've had exchanges on sked forums that proceeded as:

I'm on 7050.3
---can you go to 7055?
no, I'm crystal controlled
--- OK, I'll listen for you on 7055
can't transmit there, crystal control
--- can you switch to VFO?
no VFO here
---OK sorry, my tuner is set for 7055

Possibly the instability experience outside the case is merely because the operators fingers are closer to the regeneration coil. 

I just built the Para80Set (from QRPGUYS) and this was what I experienced also.  (The instructions here suggest using a nylon screw or double-sided tape to secure the regen torroid to the board -- I don't know what arrangement the BJ uses here - but mechanical soundness is critical here. 

I have used nail polish to PTO coils -- but this is mostly because the wire used is much smaller diameter than used here.  I am thinking that it isn't necessary here, but no harm if you wish to do it.  If you can operate the rig without moving the frequency (or pitch) of the receive signal -- there is nothing needing treatment here.  Note because there isn't a narrow bandpass anywhere here -- you would only notice a frequency difference as a change in pitch. 

I can't think of any reason to treat the transistors with styrofoam or anything else.  The transistors being rigidly soldered to the board, cannot impact stability here.  It is nothing more than having everything in the box un-moving as the rig is operated.  Your report says everything is well with your rig -- no fixes required.

FWIW I used mine assembled but not in a case for a few QSOs.  Sitting on the operating desk it worked fine, no instability noted.  I have never used polish or anything else on toroids, never any issues and the BJ is no different.

Most times have had instabilities with radios it was caused by a poor or missed solder connection.  I personally wouldn't worry with polish or styrofoam.  Inspect the board for missed or poor connections.
