John Parker,

Went back to Hobby Lobby tonight and I didn’t find any small boxes for the XTAL project so if no one else can come up with one you’ll have to wing it ?  I was fortunate to find another BJ box, must be a popular size as they again only had one on the shelf.

Yours will be in the mail on Monday.

I just got back from Hobby Lobby, got their last BJ box and they don’t have any for the Crystal Spotter Kit so I will have to see what I can come up with.  Maybe I should go into the small box building business ?

The original Hobby Lobby box SKU #299743S was discontinued. I was told this today at our Hobby lobby store in Columbia, Tn. I was also told that other stores may have some remaining stock. I will rig something up. Good luck and hope to see you on the air.

What's your power supply voltage? If it's a 13.8 V supply the current will be only a few mA more than what I measured with a 12 V supply.

All indications point to a zapped U1, so go ahead and contact Steve the Kitter for a replacement.
His email contact info is at the bottom of the Bayou Jumper kit page.

While you are waiting for that you can go ahead and check out the transmitter section. It's completely independent of the receiver.

With the chip out the voltage stayed above 30ma soon as put  the chip in starts getting warm then the  the numbers are crazy.

Re: 40 and 80 Meter Nets

FWIW - 40m propagation has been long for a while but occasionally it does open for short hops.  Tuesday evening our Fox Hunt maps showed 40m propagation to be approximately 1000 miles from the transmitting station. That was verified by our live maps.  One Fox in PA was able to make contacts from WI down through FL and almost none elsewhere.  The second Fox, in TX, had a similar experience.  His saving was his more central location in the U.S. but still his contacts were at plus/minus the 1000 mile range, from CA to ME..

I am located in the between the two Foxii and was able to contact both but with less than desirable reports.  As the evening wore on the TX Fox signal increased to a nice level then began fading again. The PA Fox was a struggle.

Timing was important in this event.  Our hunt began at 0200z and ended at 0330z. It appears the propagation band was moving from east to west during this time frame, as usual, following the sun

Said all that to say this: never heard the 4S net on 40m last night. I'm about 400 air miles from Johnny and I believe Nate is less than 100 air miles from Johnny. So, no surprise we didn't hear the net on 40m.  80m was better and easy to hear/contact Johnny but the QSB was rapid and there was some noise on the band.  Johnny was 579 here and he gave me a 559.

Re: Bayou Jumper troubleshooting audio chip

Get in touch with Steve the Kitter ... his email contact info is at the bottom of the kit web page.
He'll be able to set you up with a replacement chip.

In the meantime, do you have a way to measure the supply current being drawn by the radio?

If so, unplug your earbuds, turn the radio to receive mode and look at the supply current . It should show a brief high current spike for a second or two as capacitors are charging up, then drop back to a steady 25 mA or so.
If it stays above say, 30 mA after 3 or 4 seconds, then turn the radio off. Pop U1 out of its socket and repeat the current test.

Report back what you discover.

Sam,

Let me recommend Bill Grassa, N4ATS. His telephone number is 407-957-8054 and his address is 4854 Sparrow Drive, St. Cloud, FL 34772 which is near Orlando. HE DOES GREAT WORK and his prices are terrific as well. Can't praise him enough.

Bill used to do all the repair work for a local branch of a national amateur radio chain before it closed its doors a few years ago. He is very well known for his outstanding work.

Give him a call or shoot him an email at grassa@... but I will warn you that he will probably need you to respond to a "confirmation" email as he has a system to guard against spam, etc.

Good luck es 73,
