test of new Mediacom port

WA0ITP

MediaCom, the company I love to hate.

Incredibly, without notifying their users, about 3 weeks ago they changed the port and security requirements for sending messages. We all had to figure it out, call them, use Google, or whatever it took.

Finally got done without their help. Couldn't reach their customer no service, lines were busy and loong waits - No wonder. Wasted a lot of time here at home also.

Yahoo wouldn't let me post on their groups with an email other than the one I used to set up my account (understandable) so I've been off the reflector for the 3 weeks. But now I'm baaack. However, I'm using wa0itp@4sqrp.com for everything now except posting to the reflectors. It's a more reliable email address, pse change your address books. Thanks much.

Re: RS-232 question

Jim Sheldon

Bob,
Download the free "terminal" program called "TerraTerm", set it up to send/receive on whatever "COM" port your DB9 connector shows on Windows "Device Manager".  Set the TerraTerm COM port to that one with baud rate 9600, 8bits and No Parity.  Probably stop bit = 1.  That should allow you to see what characters are sent by the keypad on your screen.

I have a keypad that purports to output RS-232 (9600N8).
I need to test it on a Windows computer, but since I have been
an Apple user for some years, I’ve forgotten what Windows utility
I can use.

I’d like to plug the keypad into a DB-9 connector on the
Windows machine, hit a key on the keypad, and see that
character displayed on the screen.  Should be simple in the
software.  .  .  .

Can anyone give me a clue how to get this working?

Thanks and 73 - Bob, K6KL

Re: RS-232 question

You need some sort of driver software to connect the serial port / keyboard activity to the operating system.

Re: PSK try

Jim Pruitt

It is too bad that NJQrp never had a PSK40 warbler.  The Warbler PSK80 was popular for a while.  I seldom see it mentioned any more.  I have 2 of them.  I would have preferred to see a PSK20 but that would have been in direct competition with Dave Benson and am sure that is why none was ever produced as a club kit.  There were a few PSK30 conversion kits sold but I got the impression that it had some problems and never really caught on.

The NUEPSK looked like a great item but was rather expensive for my budget and I get the impression the same thing could be done with a cheap tablet and FLDigi plus a radio and for less money.

Thank you.

Looking for PSK-20, built or unbuilt

Hi folks,

I'm looking to buy a Small Wonder Labs PSK-20, built (working) or unbuilt, prefer the later vox-activated version, but will consider the serial port version if the price is right.

P.S.    If anybody has ever tried to homebrew a PSK rig, I'd appreciate to hear your experiences. I want to make a backpack rig for demos for our college radio club, to work our other portable station when the band is dead.

OT: FS Jetstream JT270M VHF/UHF FM 10 watt transceiver

Jim Sheldon

Anyone need an inexpensive VHF/UHF 10 watt mobile radio? I have for
sale a Jetstream JT270M which is a low end 199 channel 2 meter/70
centimeter mobile/portable radio that makes a real good little "Prepper"
radio. Power output is 10 watts on high and 4 watts on low - frequency
range 136-174 MHz and 400-470 MHz transmit and receive. Transmit
current is 1.8 amp max on high power, standby current is 800 milliamps.
Size is 4 3/4" by 1 1/2" by 3 3/8". This one is a couple years old but
in great condition, never used mobile and from a non-smoking
environment. A good place to find information on this and lots of other
radios of this type is www.miklor.com.

Comes with the original box (60+ page English manual on CD as the
original manual was in Chinese), Mobile mounting bracket, new
microphone, power cord and programming cord ($14 value). Programs
easily with the free Chirp software using the included cord.

These originally sold in the $125 to $145 range new. I'm asking $60 for
this one and that will include shipping anywhere in the United States.
Prefer not to ship internationally as I'm not sure how this meets
government regulations except for the U.S.

If interested, please reply direct, not on the reflector to
w0eb@cox.net. I'll take PayPal or USPS money orders and the first "I'll
take it" by date/time sent on the email, will get the right of first
refusal.
