Re: My KX2 arrived

Charles W. Powell

It’s a great radio.  It’s ever so slightly confusing when you also have a KX3, but that’s why I have a copy of the manual on my laptop and iPad.  The tuner is nothing short of amazing.  It will match a hairpin, if you plug it in.  Try a 1:1 current balun with the doublet.  You will limit your losses even more.  A good 1:1 balun design has negligible loss, but a 4:1 can have considerable loss.  Not a big deal at 100 watts but a huge deal at 5 watts.

Have fun. I sure do!

GE Ken,

3 things to consider -

1) Make sure it isn’t a 3-position switch.  If it is, make sure switch is thrown all the way over.

2) Check the solder joints on the jumper that crosses the two lugs on the switch closest to the edge of the board.

3) Putting too much heat on a lug when soldering and melting the case which requires a new switch.

Hope this helps

OT: New supply of 12V 17AH batteries

Jim Sheldon

I just received a set of 16 Panasonic LC RD1217P valve regulated, medical grade, 12 volt, 17 Amp hour SLA batteries. These are next to new and are pulls from a portable X-Ray machine. The particular hospital changed maintenance contractors not too long after they were installed. The new contractor required the equipment to have all new batteries at the beginning of the contract so these were pulled and disposed of to my battery supplier.

They are too heavy to ship but are available to anyone willing to pick them up in the Wichita area. Allied Radio sells them for $106.00, Amazon has them for $63.00 but I'm allowed to make them available to area hams for $20 each or two for $30. This will be the only price break though and a case of 4 would be $60.
There are 4 cases available at these prices.

These will be fully tested like new and fully charged, ready to use. They can be charged with just about any standard 12 volt charger.

Interested persons contact me off the reflector please - w0eb@cox.net. Any not sold by the end of September will be at the Wichita hamfest.

Re: Help with 4S-Tuner

Usually, there is a jumper across one end (the "out" position) wires on the center (wiper) pairs go to input and output jacks of the tuner. Remaining two contacts (other end of the switch) go to the tuner in/out.

Help with 4S-Tuner

Ken Harthun

Hello!

I recently built the antenna tuner and in one way, it works great. But I think I goofed on something: it only works with the in/out switch in the "in" position. After I tune up, if I switch it to "out," all the signals disappear. I think I wired the switch wrong. Anyone else had this problem and can tell me what's wrong? If not, I'll figure it out, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask since I'm probably not the only one who has had this problem.

Thanks, de Ken W4KGH

I know it seems like a long time since the July contest. If you forgot any of the rules, go to QRPContest.com to refresh your memory. The rules are also available on the 4SQRP website. They should be the same (i.e., identical). If you forgot how to log your contacts, go to QRPContest.com to do that.

Every month has its own winner. If you haven't participated all year, your chances of winning in August are the same as anyone else's, assuming you enter the contest. If you don't enter, I guarantee you will lose. Again this month, if you participate at all, I'd like you to enter your score, even if it is ZERO. The only requirement is that you at least listen to the frequencies we generally use for at least 15 minutes. See the rules (QRPContest.com) for a list of frequencies.

New for 2016: There will be no October 4x4 Sprint. Attendance the last couple of years was pathetic, especially in 2015. As a result, for this year only, the winner for the year will be based on scores from November, 2015 to December, 2016. Starting in 2017, the winner for the year will be based on scores from January, 2017 to December, 2017, which makes more sense and is much easier to remember.

I'll will try to send one or two additional reminders. I promise they won't be this long.

Re: 4QRP email blog August #1

Walter - K5EST

Hi Tommy, well the publication (4QRP) is technically an unscheduled blog delivered via email.

This type of outlet give a faster news and information. Newsletters are disappearing because of time between publication and since articles and authors are hard pressed to be politically correct or face an outlandish amount of whining complaint emails. Also, the liability of reproduction of someone's webpage for an article is not entirely the webpage owner's right to allow the copying.

We members of the 4SQRP Group do not want any legal proceedings against us for an Internet provider claiming copyrighted webpages and will not easily grant reproduction.

We do have a newsletter Editor and it is his liability and call when to publish.

Thanks for taking the time to email.

1. In this Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM), we propose, in response to a petition for
rulemaking filed by the American Radio Relay League, Inc. (ARRL),1 to amend Part 97 of the
Commissions Rules regarding technical standards applicable to data communications that may be
transmitted in the Amateur Radio Service. Specifically, we propose to remove limitations on the symbol
rate (also known as baud rate)the rate at which the carrier waveform amplitude, frequency, and/or
phase is varied to transmit information2applicable to data emissions in certain amateur bands. We
believe that this rule change will allow amateur service licensees to use modern digital emissions, thereby
better fulfilling the purposes of the amateur service and enhancing its usefulness.

Wednesday night NETS......looks like some of the Wednesday nets are taking a break until around October 1st. Actually if you have the ability to just listes in on 7.122 MHz then you may find Group members just looking for a QSO. If the bands are trashed then it is a perfect time to be building rigs so when Winter gets here, you have a new rig to enjoy!
