Re: Antenna Tuner isue

I dunno -- it may be just fine as is ....

We traded e-mail .. he clarified the noise is heard on receive.  I suggested it could be artifact of AGC action of the receiver, or merely hearing the change in the noise as tuner is adjusted.

Another way of looking at this -- if the 'sound' is okay whether tuner is perfectly adjusted, or misadjusted -- then the tuner is okay.

Glad to hear folk building and operating stuff -- and to be part of the community.

Good afternoon all,
Pleased to say I will resume the Wednesday evening 40m nets from Wednesday November 2nd. I will (as time permits) call 2 nets, I'd like to try 00:00z as well as 00:30z to see how the band performs 30 minutes earlier than "normal". Of course it's only a couple of weeks until the clocks go back an hour so condx will likely be perceived as "changing" after that anyway.
I look forward to resuming service on 40m, I really missed it.
Also I've agreed to call the NAQCC Mid West Net on 40m (7.117 +/-) on Monday evenings @ 02:00 so if you're around please feel free to give that one a try as well.
Looking forward to hearing y'all on the air soon.

One way to confirm; swap the Polyvaricons.  If the problem is the same, it's likely static.  If if follows the cap., it's defecdtive.

Dave

nice on your successful build.  Scratchy audio heard when exercising the tuner -- wow very cool to translate mechanical motion into audio modulated electrons -- this is called microphonics, I think ...

No I don't think this is what you are experiencing.  you did not mention that you are transmitting when you here these sounds - but I suspect this is the case.  If so, it is a little instability in the PA or driver stage under varying load to the antenna (often high VSWR but not always).  this is more noticeable in a transceiver that feed transmit audio into the receive chain for the side-tone.  it is an oddity that it occurs while tuning -- hopefully it sounds much clearer when tuner is appropriately adjusted for a match?

If you are not hearing it after the tuner is adjusted in normal operation, I suggest all is well enough.

I have built the 4SQRP Group antenna tuner and really think it is a fantastic kit and easy to build with the provided instructions. It seems to work quite well and I have tested it against other antenna tuners that I have and it is spot on in tuning a long wire that I have is a temporary antenna.

I have noticed though, that when I rapidly turn the left sided tuning capacitor it is scratchy in the audio that I am hearing on the receiver. I didn't think that was possible with these small tuning caps since they have a plastic layer between each of the veins.

Since it does work correctly is this a problem? Should I replace the cap?

Thank you for any and all advice.

Good thought -- I did not consider the possibility of no LO reaching the SA612 IC -- in that case a mixer becomes a resistor, and perhaps only an AM receiver.

Looking forward to hearing that the receiver is working.

Check in at your own comfy speed, I will match you. No but net protocol to worry about.. no list of "Q" signals.. and if you want or need to swap numbers with folks.. just let me know when you check in. NO PROBLEM.

Then.. after the 20M net, I'll call it on 7.0625 and do it there. Pretty much covers the country, come  get your BOO on.

If I remember right you need the jumpers in the xtal position unless you are using an external VFO.

Sources of interesting alternative boxes for Bayou Jumper

G’day

For those who are interested in an unusual alternative to the Hobby Lobby boxes, take a look in your town or city at the shops that are run by charities that work to improve living conditions and health in the poorest of Asia and African countries.

I bought two brilliant keepsake/jewellery boxes yesterday in the Oxfam shop in Perth with very similar dimensions to the smallest Hobby Lobby box.

Have a look at https://shop.oxfam.org.au/homedecor/interior/boxes-baskets/?p=2 for ideas. One of the boxes I bought is the carved elephant keepsake box (AUS29.95). It’s dimensions are not identical to the Hobby Lobby box, but probably close enough to make the Bayou Jumper fit.  The box is made from Mango wood and comes from India.  My other box is made of Sheesham wood, sometimes called Indian Rosewood, and is from Utta Pradesh in India.

Charity shops like the Oxfam ones  often sell lots of these keepsake boxes, as they are popular in the country of origin, where hand skills are still very important and have higher value than in ‘western countries’.

You can buy a really nice box for your project and help with overseas aid too.

Joe

sometimes a direct conversion receiver will pick up a loud station and receive it like a crystal detector - meaning VFO will not tune it.  Perhaps a time out to look over work, orientation of parts and solder joints.  we have all been there - or possibly things are almost working.  I often use a frequency counter -- or put a piece of wire near the oscillator to see if a receiver will pick it up, and it is tuning.  I am not building this particular receiver so a fellow builder should come to your aid.

Re: Bayou Jumper - Sneak Peak! Box

Mark Janzer

I had the opportunity to visit two Hobby Lobby's yesterday and experienced the following:

If the store does not have the small box in stock (on the shelf), they cannot order another one. They are required to order the entire "nested" three box set. They will not order an entire set if there is one or two of the other sized boxes on the shelf.
The "nested" set is available online, but not the one small box.

The small box dimensions are 7-3/4" x 3-1/4" x 5-1/2".

An alternative box can be had at a cigar store. One nearby to me has a large collection available for sale, of various shapes and sizes. I found a "Black Market" cigar box with some personality, and similar dimensions.

to wit:

With some modifications I hope it'll be adaptable to the new kit.

Cheers,
Mark

If you are fortunate enough to be near a Hobby Lobby, the boxes are available individually (the S in the above SKU is the small one). With an internet 40% off coupon, it works out to about $3.80 including tax, at least down here.

Keep checking eBay.  I found one a few years ago set up with the SAXVO oscillator.  They show up every once in a while.

Re: NS 40

I'm not involved with the bayou jumper at all, but since it is called a "transceiver" and since it includes the NS40, my educated guess is that the NS40 circuitry is incorporated into the Bayou Jumper.  The NS40 offered by David is a stand-alone transmitter only, similar to (identical to?) the ones previously offered by 4SQRP.

I'm hoping all the interest in the Bayou Jumper will translate into more activity on the Second Sunday Sprint, since I understand one of the crystals included with the rig is the frequency used by many for that contest (7122 kHz).  Actually, the other crystal (7030 kHz) is often used as well.  Note the receiver coverage (about 120 kHz) is such that it should be able to receive both of those frequencies, one on each end of the tuning dial.

Speculating a little, I assume that, once all the parts have arrived, kitting has begun, and a suitable selling price has been determined, the kit will show up for sale on the 4SQRP website.

My favorite prayer:

"Lord, give me patience, but I want it NOW!"
