How much TX Power allowed into a MagicBox T/R Switch?

Hidehiko Komachi - JA9MAT

Hello,

I'd like to use a tube transmitter with an old tube professional receiver.
Well I want to switch T/R smoothly with using my MagicBox. I wonder how much power is allowed. Someone says that the maximum input power is 10W and the other one says 5W. Is there specification?

Murania Radio Low Audio Outout

Curt M.

Edited

Hi guys, I finished Murania the other day and the speaker the output is really low. I double checked all the the components and everything seems fine. It wasn’t specified if +/- on the speaker had to go on any specific terminals on the secondary of the transformer but I suspect they don’t.

I was expecting that just like with my older transistor radios I would be able to set this on the counter and listen to the baseball games in the summer. I pretty much have to hold the radio within a foot of my head to make it out well. I adjusted the loop for the best sound and my battery is new. I may be able to put a small audio amplifier in the same case but before I do that I wanted to see if this is what everyone else has experienced? It was a fun kit to build but I’m disappointed in the speaker output.  I may not have built it if I knew it was going to be this low.

Maybe the audio transformer is defective. The manual had me primed for loud audio being that they tell you to set the volume at 50% while testing. Volume at 50% on my radio is nearly impossible to hear.

Nouveau 75 First QSO

Curt M.

Hi guys, while I don’t have the best antenna setup for 75m I put together the Nouveau 75 and I’ve been calling CQ off and on over the last few evenings. Tonight a station came back to me!  The other station was about 130 miles away and I had a few minute QSO with them. He said my signal wasn’t real strong but the audio sounded fine.

I’m just using a home built end fed antenna 44’ long and only 10’ off the ground so that’s saying something for his station and the output on the Nouveau 75. Surprisingly when I told him I was using a 20w PEP kit radio he called the radio by name so evidently the word is getting out about this radio.

Just figured I would post of my success with the radio for anyone else that hasn’t been heard yet using their Nouveau 75.

Thanks for posting this article.  As a budding CW operator trying to accumulate the courage to make the first qso I really appreciate it.  Although the article is several months younger than me, I've come to amateur radio only recently.  Many thanks

Friendly reminder about the SSS

Folks:

Don't forget.  The Second Sunday Sprint is tomorrow night, 7:00-9:00 pm CST (8:00-10:00 pm EST, and 5:00-7:00 pm PST).  There is sometimes some confusion when we switch from Daylight Saving Time to Standard Time.  If you prefer UTC, until DST starts again in the spring, the contest is from 0100-0300Z Monday.

As usual, try to get your score posted as soon as possible after the contest ends (qrpcontest.com). I try to tabulate everything Tuesday evening or early Wednesday morning.

Nouveau on-the-air

w9ran

With the instability problem out of the way I've used the Nouveau on the air and can report that it received rave reviews on this morning's Midwest Classic (AM) Radio Net on 3885 kHz.    From my QTH in northwest Illinois the reports were "loud and clear" and S7 to S9 from Detroit and St. Louis (250-300 miles) and "10 over 9" from 60 to 80 miles away.   Several commented favorably on the audio quality.

Now the rest of the story:   When I first checked in I was using a small converted CB amplifier using a single sweep tube that produces a resting carrier of 20 watts and 80 watts PEP on voice peaks.   But I switched the amplifier off before asking for signal reports and all the above were on the barefoot signal, not through the amplifier!

Clearly the amplifier makes a difference but this test just proves that with a clear frequency and good antenna (full size 75 meter dipole at 50' in this case) the barefoot Nouveau 75 can do a fine job.

Here's a picture of the Nouveau 75 on it's D&A "Hawk" CB amplifier perch:  https://i.imgur.com/cuFVzBl.png

I'd converted the amplifier to 80/40 meters some time ago, replacing their inefficient tank circuit (except on 11 meters, for some reason?) with a tapped toroid and upgrading the power supply.  It uses a single 6KG6 and would be an easy project to duplicate using most any sweep tube - the schematic can be found online.

I haven’t checked/noticed any heating with my Nouveau 75.  Would you advise this as a routine mod?

I only heard two sigs tonight. Chas for a short time, tried to call back but he couldn't hear me.
Then Glenn in Tenn had a good  and  steady signal on my end 559 most of the time.  Tks Glenn for digging out my weak signal.  Til next time 73;s all.

Someone asked about WA4G?.

That was WA4GIR, Joe.  He was a robust 599 here.  He is the long-serving NCS of the Knightlite's QRP net that meets Sundays on 80m at 2100 ET.  It used to be on 3.575 mHz.but the growth of digital sigs has squeezed us down to around 3.571 mHz.  A well attended net and the QNIs get somewhat rag chewy, and interestingly so.

Thursdays at 2030ET see the New England QRP night on 3.566 mHz.
