It also looks like it would be useful for switching in a separate RX antenna for rigs that don't have that functionality.  Would make it easy to use a Beverage with, say, a KX3.

Apparently that is designed for receiver muting.  It is sequenced with the keyer output - that way, the mute contact will close before the keying contact, allowing the RX to be muted before the transmitter transmits.  It could also be used with a T/R relay for moving the antenna to the transmitter before the transmitter turns on, and moving the antenna back to the RX after the transmitter is no longer transmitting.  There is a timing diagram in the manual.

If you're using a transceiver, you wouldn't normally need to use the muting function.

EZKeyer III questions

James Compton

I just finished building the EZKeyer III.  It's a great kit and fun to build. I do have a couple of questions:

1.  I'm not sure what the function of the "Mute" jack is, perhaps because I'm not familiar with the terminology.  What device would I actually be plugging into that jack and/or what is it's purpose?

2.  Regarding the "Paddles" jack, would the output from a Touch Paddle board be an acceptable feed into this jack?  I just completed the P3K touch-paddle kit from cwtouchkeyer.com. I haven't connected it to a keyer yet, but part of the test procedure is to check the voltage output between both the "dit" and "dah" outputs respectively and ground to show 4.6 volts when the respective paddle is touched.  I don't understand the correlation between the voltage output of this device as an input to a keyer versus closing the dit/dah contacts on a conventional set of paddles.

Obviously, I'm not knowledgeable about electrical design and/or function of devices. I enjoy building kits, but don't have a working knowledge of exactly how they operate. Before I do something to damage my EZKeyer, thought I'd get a some qualified opinions.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Sorry for the dupe QNI, Terry.

QSB was tough initially and I missed your acknowledgement, but then WB8ICN cleared the airwaves with his 589 sig and that brought you up to full readability with peaks at 569.

Your 80m sig last night 369 because a wet weather front was moving in and the static crashes were brutal.  I wasn't going to risk my only pair of ears with a QNI attempt.

Good morning Charles,
Well I heard not a thing last evening, did have S9+ noise though.
Just as a precaution I'm going to thoroughly check the coax to the antenna. It loaded ok but it was weird on 40 last nite.
Many thanks for listening out, much appreciated.
I wonder how Terry is making out this morning on the 40m net?
