Charles;

I'd say you did better than "OK"!

  • 429 QSO at 5 watts is VERY good performance.
  • 1st in Kansas in Class 1B1B
  • 4th in Kansas regardless of class
  • 8th Nationally in class 1B1B

Great job!

Nice net this morning, thanks guys.  40 was up and down, sometimes with deep QSB, but I got most of the exchanges.  Good morning to be on the air.   The Elecraft rigs almost  swept the field today, Chas and I were the only holdouts.  Thanks agn to all who made it in and those who tried.  I heard someone in the noise but couldn't pull you out, sri and hope to work you next week.  Making it in were:

I listened for both nets but never heard a peep. Next week I will hook uo my TuT 80 and see if the noise is there. I think I need to do a noise hunt in this house as well.

Re: Welcome! and propagation question

Don Wilhelm <w3fpr@...>

Fernan,

Get your antenna up higher.  A 40 meter antenna at 12 feet high is just "warming the worms".  Most all your radiation is straight up, and little over the face of the earth.

If you have a tree or other support, put the center of the dipole up as far as you can and operate the antenna as an inverted VEE.  If the ends of the antenna are at 12 feet, that is OK, just get the center up as high as you can.

An effective antenna is 1/4 wavelength to 1/2 wavelength high.  For 40 meters that is 33 to 66 feet.

Hi all

I am new to the group and to the hobby.

now I have a question. I am using an a dipole at 12ft and power of 5W at 40m. If I take advantage of the greyline  propagation that I read about,  reverse beacon says I can be heard up to 750mi at 11db using 40m. Any other time reverse beacon shows nothing. Is this a normal performance( or lack of) for a setup similar to mine?

I am using all homebrewed equipment transmitter, receiver, tuner and everything else. My CW skills is also something I have acquired recently so it cannot be relied upon. So as you can see there are a lot of factors that may explain my stations lack of performance. The question above is basically what I need to develop a baseline to know what my next steps are to improve my station.

A few made it in tonight.  Still it was fun and I hope 80 and 40 are better next week for us. My little Tut80 is a fun little rig and I've enjoyed using it for well over 200 QSOs. With it's nice filtering and limiting in the audio stages, it makes operating on 80 easy on the ears. Thanks gents, hope to hear you on again next week. Checking in were:

John I could hear you intermittently in the noise. Never your full call or even a entire word between the band fading and heavy static from the storms the south coast of Massachusetts seemed a bridge too far tonight.

I will keep trying though and sooner or later I will get in.

Re: Welcome! and propagation question

Hi Fernan.

At 12 feet above the ground most of your energy is being reflected by
the ground at a very high angle. While this is useful in some situations
for communicating with 'nearby' (within a few hundred km or so)
stations, it is often a poor performer for DX pursuits. Even just
doubling the height will make a considerable difference for lower angle
radiation. If you can, raise that antenna!

Also, you may be quite some distance from the RBN monitoring stations
and if most of your energy is going nearly straight up, very little will
reach them except under enhanced conditions which gray line is.

Another thought is to try another dipole that is higher and compare the
two. Next try a vertical or an antenna with more vertical
characteristics for comparison.
