Re: FD reports comments?

This was a different Field Day for me.  For the past several decades, I’ve been part of the local club’s effort and usually one half of a two-man team running the CW station.

This time, several (eight) old guys who had been QSO partners in the 60s, about 50 years ago, decided to get together for an old friends FD.  Two flew down from Oregon but most came from various locations in Arkansas.

We operated from Mt. Nebo, a 1800 foot ASL mountain near my QTH.  Far from roughing it, we rented two cabins and had the comforts.  My station was outside though.  We ran two 100 watt CW stations, each using 130 foot dipoles fed with ladder line.  They seemed to do a great job.  We used K5ALU, the call of one of our members.

We managed 2350 QSOs, about 50 of them on 6 meters and the rest divided between the two HF CW stations.  The weather was excellent and the bugs were few.  Great Field Day.

Hi Danny,

After our conversation I was looking for a reason to try simple DSB operation again. FD is always a good time to try things out.

It still amazes me how much fun simple DSB transceivers can be. More than anything I was happy with how the DC receiver worked in the crowded 40M band.

It is based on KK7B, Rick Campbell's, DC receiver designs.

Email me if you need anything for your DSB project.

For sale:  Completely built and tested SS40RX/TX in a Circuit Specialists cabinet.  Frequency range as built is 7.016 through 7.039 MHz.  It's putting out a measured 6.8 watts into a 50 ohm dummy load.  The receiver is the older SS40, but the TX has been fully and properly integrated.  It does very close to full QSK switching.  The receiver is really hot, with the minimum discernable signal a measured -132 dBm.  I've added the Freq-Mite freq counter and the RF connector on the back is an SO-239.  There is also an on-off toggle switch on the back panel.

Asking $130 for the whole package, shipped anywhere in the US.  PayPal preferred but I will take a US Postal Service money order.

Please email me off the reflector to ask for further info or to tell me you want it.  First "I'll take it" determined by time of receipt of the email gets right of first refusal.

Cool Don. I can't wait to try your design sometime. Still throwing around the idea of a DSB kit to pitch to the group...

Re: FD reports comments?

Our local club did pretty good - for us. When I joined the club about 7-8 years ago they hadn't done anything for field day for years. Typical lack of support (who's going to do it?).
I instituted a "shortened" field day and threw in a potluck at the end of the day, Saturday, that way I could be assured of some attendance. Everyone comes for food.
No overnight, no campers, tents, etc... Just go to a good local park and have at it.
It was total selfishness on my part. I wanted to know what field day was all about and I wanted an excuse to operate in a park. I admit it.
So, that's what we've done these last few years.
Of course there's a vocal contingent that say, "that's not the way we used to do it in the good old days." Of course they NEVER EVER do anything anymore.
Enough of the soap box. Well that particular soap box anyway.

We had four complete HF stations setup. All had good antennas. Very nice setups. Had a Honda generator (man, aren't those things nice?). Batteries and I used Li-po's this year. I have a very good friend who flies small, medium & large RC helicopters. Because he doesn't like his batteries getting stale I get his old ones - which for radio use are ideal. And he has given me several of his older chargers as well. These batteries are 2200 mAH. I used two batteries Saturday - not because I had to. Just swapped them out.

I ran the FT-817 my main rig. I don't own a 100 watt rig. I made more contacts and had the farthest contact. I got a KH6 Saturday. I ran on 15 meters all day. Oh and SSB only.
The 817 is a great rig but on 20 meters I just don't have the filters for a field day effort. There are too many stations too close together.
Antenna was a 40 meter OCF dipole / windom. Home made.

We all had a blast and I left a lot of them scratching their heads about that QRP crap.

FOXHUNT Summer Season opener!!

Dale Putnam

The Game Warden, has done due diligence... and finally buckled to extreme pressure,
has agreed to allowing the FOXHUNT to proceed this Thursday, in the 20 acre wood.
The commencement celebration will kick off at 0100z Friday morning (GMT) or 7pm MT Thursday evening,
somewhere between the two trees - 14.050 and 14.070... with two outstanding FOX to be pursued,
caught, and de-pelted. De Pelts consist of exchanging RST SPC (state, providence, or country) op name and power
all this is to be accomplished with 5watts or less.  Sometimes much less... but if an insurance or LOW PWR pelt is
requested, please be use courtesy, and avoid taking FOX time when other Hounds haven't tree'd him yet.

If you want to check up the official rules.. click on - http://www.qrpfoxhunt.org/summer_rules.htm
and when you get a chance, say thanks to the Colorado Qrp Club for all their support!!

May the Prop Princess smile upon us all!!

Have a great hunt,

Re: FD reports comments?

Well, here’s my 2¢ on Field Day. This was my very first solo effort at FD, although I admit that I have done a lot of field setup in recent years. No problems with antennas - 53’ long wire that went straight up, and a dedicated 20 meter vertical on top of a 23’ painter’s pole, with 2 radials. Both antennas worked very well for me. My station was my KX3, PX3, and my Macbook Air. I was 100% battery and solar recharging with 48 Ah of batteries available to me. The laptop was powered by the batteries as well. All CW, I managed 430 QSOs with only one dupe logged that I missed on the front end. Total points ended up at 4820 and i spent 14.5 hours on the air. My chair left a permanent impression on my posterior aspect. But it was fun, and I think successful.

HI Dean,
It is 30 - 50 ft high..  the model of it on 160 is discouraging.. but looks ok on 80..
gets much better on 40 and up.
Sure hears nice in the static.

Dale how hi up is/was the loop? I run one at the cabin here, full wave on 160. Loads nicely on all bands with Johnson kW matchbox OR kx3 atu... I was gonna extend it out another couple hundred feet to be in the 7-800 ft range. Mines only 30ft above ground

FD is a super day to test new antennas... so.. when the day arrived.. I threw up a 700 ft loop.
Had to test it.. so I made 200+Qs with a K2 on a solar charged battery at 5 watts. Comparison
on 80-40-20-15 no one was heard on 10.. the loop is quieter and in most directions at least as
good or better than a 20m EDZ... so... the loop for now, has been deemed a keeper..
Now, I need to make it strong enough to last the winter.

200+ Q and 9 hours of on the air time.. great way to spend a Sat.
AND, I already uploaded to LOTW.. too.

Have a great day,

That's terrifficc, Ed.
Interesting that you used 250 ft...
Modeling that shows it works great on the higher bands.
Congratulations, good job.

Dale;
I have loop envy...
Karen & I pulled ~250 of wire into the trees as a loop at the lake.
It was so QUIET and seemed to work VERY well for us.
We left it up and will probably refine it's configuration a bit as a regular station antenna.
Used the KX3 at 5 watts: 1B OK (2 op, battery.)
Used only one 7AH battery with a solar panel recharging for about 5 hours.
We recharged the logging computer (N3FJP FD Logger) during our breaks.
Around 220 contacts and 63 sections.
Made my first 6 meter SSB contacts ever.
Didn't hear much directly to our North.
Snagged a single KS station but no Nebraska or Dakotas.

I used my homebrew 40M DSB transmitter w/battery power this weekend. I operated about 2 hours total and enjoyed myself quite a bit.

At approx. 2W ERP I  worked 8 contacts. After FD was over I also worked a local fella for a nice long contact.

The band was not very good late Saturday. There was a few strong stations and a lot of QRM in between. I actually had best success with the weak stations.

Hope everyone had a fun weekend.
