w0rw/pm, 11 Nov. 2020, Honoring Veterans.
Times: 1700z and 2100z,
Freq: 14060.5 kHz,  +/- 1 Khz.

The PRC74 is a Viet Nam Era Military  Radio.
It is a solid state, fully synthesized, 1964, backpack radio.

This radio spent 40 years in a junk yard and is now back on the air !
It is not a 'Hanger Queen'.
(See pictures and info at : <http://www.n6cc.com/anprc-74b-hf-manpack-transceiver>.

The entire rig weighs 30 (heavy metal) pounds and that's with the new Li-Ion battery pack.
It is a Special Forces Radio used for long range comms.
This radio has at least 53  HC-49 crystals in it.
They are used to mix all the channel frequencies in 1 kHz steps from 2 to 18 MHz.
Replacement of all the crystals today would cost  $2,000.
The original cost was of the radio $5,560. The cost of my new Chevy was  $2500.
Other similar Green radios used in Viet Nam were the Squad radios, PRC25 and PRC77, for short range low power FM communications, 30-76 MHz.

You can read more about this radios in KI0PF's, book..."MIL SPEC RADIO GEAR",
or see a PRC74 Video at  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8m5NuLvw6k

Send in your score

John Lonigro

This is the monthly reminder to send in your score from yesterday's Second Sunday Sprint (NOT your November Sweepstakes score!).  It seems that more than a few of us got caught up in the November sweepstakes by mistake.  One person emailed me to complain that we were sending CW at 25-35 wpm. That didn't sound like our contest. From the various emails on this reflector, it obviously wasn't. We're the "Friendly Group", not the "Cutthroat Group" (hi).

Anyway, log onto www.qrpcontest.com and enter your score.  As usual, I plan on tabulating the scores Tuesday evening and reporting them Wednesday morning, so get your scores submitted ASAP.

Just wanted to let you know that I was there.........

I do wish that the organizers would (1) Take notice of other events and at least request/define/limit the areas for their event, (2) actually post areas to NOT play in and (3) Ask that the contesters be courteous to those not in the contest when their CQ are answered by an unsuspecting/uninformed OP looking for a QSO.

I listened on 20/40/80m around the usual places and all I heard was 25-35wpm contesters, sorry but I really lost my usual patience and did some WSPR.

No 4SS stations heard on 80m, 40m, nor 20m.  Sweepstakes seems to have everyone (4S) taking break. Lots of QRN from the major solar flare on lower bands, too.  That doesn't help QRP stations.

C;Ya next month.

W6SFM Bug Roundup Event is Coming, Save the Date

SFMARC W6SFM

Announcing W6SFM's BUG ROUNDUP

Have you seen, the solar flux numbers are up in the 90s!

The Samuel F. Morse Amateur Radio Club, a Sacramento, California based CW enthusiast club wanted a special time to bring bug operators together on the air. In the same spirit as ARRL's Straight Key Night, participants are encouraged to make simple, conversational, “chewing-the-fat” QSOs using their bug type key. This is an opportunity to exercise, share and exhibit your personalized fist. This is NOT a contest. However, there is a very easy and quick requested signup form that can be found at https://w6sfm.com/bug-roundup/. Once you have read the page, and optionally registered for the event simply Call "CQ BR" so folks know you are a Bug Roundup Participant.  So lets grab that bug, clean those contacts, and let’er fly! We want to hear that “Banana Boat / Lake Erie Swing" or that commercial KPH/WCC quality fist.

Reserve the date! The event begins on Saturday November 21st (00:00 UTC) and concludes Sunday Nov. 22nd (23:59 UTC), 2020
That's 4:00 PM Friday (Nov. 20th) afternoon until  3:59 PM Pacific Time Sunday (Nov. 22nd Pacific LOCAL Time).

For more information, to register your station, and to help assist in spotting, potentially increasing QSOs, an On-line chat window link can be found near the bottom of Bug Roundup home page located at  https://w6sfm.com/bug-roundup/  We hope to hear you all on the air! 73,

W6SFM
