Brutus bash - got it booked!
ka0ncr
Hi Group, Just got off the phone with the "PTB" at Brutus and have a tent spot reserved. $7.50 a night doesn't seem bad. I think it is the same as last year. I do hope
that they have done something with the outies though.. Last year a 4 AM trip to the "spider shelter" in the dark with nothing but my camp "head light" to see by made me think that the field across the road would have been a better idea! Wish they would leave the door open to the inside facilities... at least at night while the 4sqrp group is camped there! First time Brutus bash campers be warned! ;P I was going to stop by there this Friday on the way down to the Joplin hamfest, but now that I have a spot reserved there is not really a need for it.. Although I still might stop by there since I will be traveling with my dad and I think he might like to spend a few minutes looking at Brutus. We will see how time treats us on the way down.. if we are running early we might stop.. My dad is K0SCN, and while he would like to attend the bash, he's 92 and would probably not like sleeping out on the
ground much:.. so this would be a chance for him to see it. I hope to bring a few items to 'tailgate' again this year. Not sure what yet... Maybe a few kits that I have on the "yet to build" shelf should be brought out. into the light of day for someone who might have a better chance of getting time to put them together.... I Hope to see a few of the 4sqrp group at Joplin this weekend! . 73 - Arnie KA0NCR ( PTB = Powers that be )

K0B was it. I agree on using the club call.
Looking forward to it. Great fun on the great plains of KS.

If I remember correctly it was K0B? I am pretty sure Bart reserved it for the event. When Brutus first began there wasn't a club call yet. I think it would be fun to use the Club call since we have one now?
Any thoughts? I better get to calling, sounds like its gonna be a sell out! Hope to cu all there. 72 Johnny AC0BQ

Last year, everyone pretty much used their own callsigns from what I remember. Using the club call wouldn't be bad either - it was just something I thought about and wondered if anyone else had any interest! Jeremy, NQ0M

Just a thought guys - but 2 years ago someone obtained a 1x1 Special Event call for the Brutus Bash - we did not do that last year - is there any interest at all in having one again this year? I'd be willing to do the reservation if anyone's interested in doing it again this year! WA6CML just called and made my reservation, so I'll be at spot #9 this year. Looking forward to seeing everyone!Jeremy, NQ0M

It actually is on my list to try to make this year. I always have a
long trip the week before the event, and it does take my old body a
few days to recover now, after any trip.
Can't count the number of times in my life that I have been past it,but have never been to it. Really looking forward to meeting many of you in person and I am quite sure I could find a couple of things to set out to part with and hopefully not find any new replacements :) Charlie, W5COV On 8/18/2014 11:34 AM, Paul Smith

I will be there this year, of course. I will probably call them this afternoon to make my reservations. I plan to get in sometime early Friday afternoon, and stay until Sunday. Mini-hamfest sounds like a good idea – that was a lot of fun last year.

The Big Brutus weekend is coming up fast, it's Sept 12 and 13. The campground electrical and water hookups and the camping fee is $15. $10 for tents with no hookups. I just made my reservation for Friday and Saturday nights, leaving on Sunday.
Pse make your reservations soon, there are only 10 sites with hookups. . Hunting season starts that weekend and we need to beat the hunters in reserving the spots. Also if you're a fisherman, the flood strip mine pits are excellent fishing, you'll probably limit out on big largemouths. Should we do a mini hamfest like last year? Thanks to you Terry, Dale, and Johnny for your well-wishes. Also, thank you to Walt for the last 2 years of the Banner. I just finished re-reading a lot of the back issues, and I only hope I can do as well as Walt did during that time – he left some pretty big shoes to fill!
Please everyone, let me know what *YOU* are interested in seeing out of the Banner! As Terry mentioned, I can be reached for now at jerutley@... – Walt told me he’s planning to pass on the ozarkqrpbanner@... address to me as well, so you can use that too. Let me know about your latest build projects, that funky antenna that shouldn’t work but does, funny stories, whatever the case may be! September’s Banner is right around the corner!
Thanks again, all!

Yes a big signal. I took my PFR3 to Blackwater Falls State Park and worked him also from our cabin. I strung up an OCF dipole and exercised each of the bands on this rig. Of course we hiked and saw much of this scenic high elevation (by east standards ...) place - and I just did radio in the evenings.CUL Curt

Hey All, I'm continuing to study Morse Code as a language. I find it an interesting subject. My end goal ~ maybe ~ is to improve my sending and reception up to 30 WPM and be able comprehend rag chew reception at 90%, i.e. understand the conversation without writing down what I'm receiving. I'm NOT nearly there by a long shot so far. If you are so inclined too and wish to receive my frequent summaries about what I've found info wise or what I've found that works for me, email me and I'll put you on my outgoing email list on such. Example: Practicing Receiving Call Signs: I'm now solid at 20 WPM on 90% of them, decent at 25 but less than 30% at 30. Of course, listening on the air - given noise, RST, and quality of the code from the other end is not as easy; but we have to start somewhere. Here's what I've found that works for me so far: @ 20 WPM (don't practice any slower!), I use a call sign generator program (NuMorse) 1. First relax; don't hold your breath, 2. Concentrate after the "de" if receiving off the air on the first two letters that follow, write them down as you receive them if you wish and then listen for the number. 3. I write down the number as I'm listing for the last 1, 2 or 3 letters. 4. I then say the full call out loud; and then, look at the screen to confirm. 5. I practice for 15 to 20 minutes a day most days, receiving a couple of pages of them. 6. It was tough at first but came along faster than I thought it would. 7. Some other technique might work better for you................. When receiving on the air signals, it is clear that different skills are required for different parts of the QSO: callsigns, RST numbers, abbreviations (e.g. QTH etc), names, and common exchanges (like WX, RIG, ANT). As such, I've found that it helps to drill on each of these types. For example, drill on sets of numbers, sets of common QSO words, etc. I've published the top 100 common words on the resources page at www.4qrp.com. I found it really helped me on rig names to listen to the names for the top six brands using my NuMorse program using a text file. Example. KNWD, YEASU, ICOM, RX3, ETC. I practice these names at random at 30 to 40 words per minute. I listen for the whole word and then say it. Same for antenna names: dipole, yagi, etc. A big part of reception is preparation. For example if you are working a contest, read up on the exchange ahead of time, perhaps at: http://www.hornucopia.com/contestcal/weeklycont.php and practice a bit with it. I find it easier then since I know what to expect, example. 55N, GA, NR 0012. Accurate anticipation really makes the reception easier! More detail next time. Unc Phil, W0XI PS: English is much worse: How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on. --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast!
