Wayne, very interesting, will have to read that Book on QRP Retro , our place looks like a log  cabin and we are out in the sticks  , does that qualify ? hihi.
  Thanks for putting in your article on your attic Grv5 in the Banner , now you can refer questions to it , lol.  I am planning to go portable this Fall i will try out my Verticle and a Dipole homebrewed , also will try to check into the net ,will be Fun , but the hike is a challenge , mentally i am up for it , hihi.  Have Fun, AJ W5HEH

you can create your own definition of retro for your station, and maybe explore a few things in parallel.  ok here is what I suggest for a station architecture to consider --

1. magic box.  aside from a bunch of cables, its a nifty way to connector a Rx and Tx to a common antenna - and a means to make the CW modulation. 

2. any good enough receiver you want.  a VFO is retro enough these days!  maybe you have something already, whether is features a vernier knob or separate main and bandspread.  if you focus more on function, not evil to use solid state devices inside -- its an easier power supply also to provide. 

2a. for fun, also have a regen in your stash.  while I am building a Ozark Patrol for fun, you might wish to consider a single-ham-band design such as the WBR regen (solid state).  if you must have a tube receiver fix, there is that ham band regen in QRP classics.  for me the power supply argument encourages considering the solid state path (not that I would not want to make a tube one some day maybe). 

idea is to plug the regenerative receiver for fun, but perhaps it will convince one to employ the other receiver! 

3. transmitter.  if you really want to be retro, xtal maybe!  others will mate a tube transmitter to a DDS VFO.  retro might imply a few stages, and consider transmitters or tubes (see power supply ....)

the look and feel of the gear may define retro more than the electronics.  analogy is some of those retro looking cars that were recently made, yet they have modern components under the shell.

Another tip -- make sure you understand the culture associated with a QTC exchange -- hint read the rules AND read how to record the QTC in your logging program.  While I have seen folk decline these, its more polite to understand and learn this skill that mimics traffic handling. 

Yikes another contest - and I did a few too many this past season .... so I may just operate an hour or so.  If one does the ARRL DX contest nice to pay back a few QSOs to Europe. 

From the midwest it just might be short contest running QRP, but of course I could be wrong.  But that is another idea - give the K2 time off and run the NC2030 on 20 meters to see what its four watts will do. 

Also working on homebrew version of the Ozark Patrol, its nearing completion - so maybe I will beat the kit announcement.  Actually the parts were sitting there - I had to do something with them - but each regen project one builds seems to nearly deplete the junk box of potentiometers!  I think I just need to install the gimmicks and wire up the 9 volt supply.  I spotted one wrong connection that I am glad I caught before needing to troubleshoot -- use each connection as an opportunity to verify the previous ones.

Lots of noise here this morning.  You were about S3.  I tried calling in a couple of times but no luck.  K2 is working fine.  5 out of 6 20 mtr foxes and all of the W1AW Staes since middle of May.  I will try again next week.
