RMRc report

First.. thank you all for the fast net... not a lotta chat.. but we gotter done..
had lightning within 10 when I signed off.. with: KE6OIO, K0DTJ, W5HNS, AA7CU, and KC7WNS in the log. Sorry for the short net.. but I have already used up my luck.. actually I don't want to rely on God's protection, when I have a choice... I've already used up some of that this week. Was all set to tell you all about it.. but that can wait til Thurs. Don't worry.. all is well.. nothing happened that won't grow back... in nature... and it will be better too. Tell you Thurs. Thanks for the understanding and tolerance to a fast net today. Have a great day, --... ...-- Dale - WC7S in Wy

Re: Retro station in the offing

you can create your own definition of retro for your station, and maybe explore a few things in parallel. ok here is what I suggest for a station architecture to consider -- 1. magic box. aside from a bunch of cables, its a nifty way to connector a Rx and Tx to a common antenna - and a means to make the CW modulation. 2. any good enough receiver you want. a VFO is retro enough these days! maybe you have something already, whether is features a vernier knob or separate main and bandspread. if you focus more on function, not evil to use solid state devices inside -- its an easier power supply also to provide. 2a. for fun, also have a regen in your stash. while I am building a Ozark Patrol for fun, you might wish to consider a single-ham-band design such as the WBR regen (solid state). if you must have a tube receiver fix, there is that ham band regen in QRP classics. for me the power supply argument encourages considering the solid state path (not that I would not want to make a tube one some day maybe). idea is to plug the regenerative receiver for fun, but perhaps it will convince one to employ the other receiver! 3. transmitter. if you really want to be retro, xtal maybe! others will mate a tube transmitter to a DDS VFO. retro might imply a few stages, and consider transmitters or tubes (see power supply ....) the look and feel of the gear may define retro more than the electronics. analogy is some of those retro looking cars that were recently made, yet they have modern components under the shell. have fun with this. 100 watts eh, now lemmeesee, how do I get the old girl to 100 watts? oh yeah, I remember, turn UP the power control, trouble is I think it's frozen in position, it's been so long since it was used :) Nah, just teasing... Have fun everyone, I'll be mowing the yard and reading up on "stuff".

Retro station in the offing
Wayne Dillon
Good morning 4 Staters, I've been re-reading Ade Weiss's book "History of QRP in the US, 1924 to 1960" and I love the tales of what the "old-timers" did way back when. Well the tale that fascinates me in particular is from David "Mid" Middelton [W7ZC (W4CA/5, W9WFV)] and his tale of operating QRP from a Pecos River cabin in 1934 (the above are his 1934 call-signs, all have been reissued subsequently).
What I'd like to do is reproduce the experience but using 21st century technology but in the same style as the original 1930's station set-up. So, where to start? obviously the "2 tube" Regen RX is going to be be the Ozark Patrol (as soon as stocks are replenished!), yeah I know that there are plenty of Regen designs out there but why go away from the proven products the 4SQRP Group offers? I'm also working on a replacement for the single tube TX (honkin' big power-FET maybe?). Our son, who lives and farms in the Ozarks, has promised me the use of a small cabin on his land.
Anyone else looking at a little retro revival? 72/3 es God Bless all de Wayne - KC0PMH

Re: Work the WAE DX Contest next weekend! (+ homebrew OP Ozark Patrol)
Curt
Another tip -- make sure you understand the culture associated with a QTC exchange -- hint read the rules AND read how to record the QTC in your logging program. While I have seen folk decline these, its more polite to understand and learn this skill that mimics traffic handling.
Yikes another contest - and I did a few too many this past season .... so I may just operate an hour or so. If one does the ARRL DX contest nice to pay back a few QSOs to Europe. From the midwest it just might be short contest running QRP, but of course I could be wrong. But that is another idea - give the K2 time off and run the NC2030 on 20 meters to see what its four watts will do. Also working on homebrew version of the Ozark Patrol, its nearing completion - so maybe I will beat the kit announcement. Actually the parts were sitting there - I had to do something with them - but each regen project one builds seems to nearly deplete the junk box of potentiometers! I think I just need to install the gimmicks and wire up the 9 volt supply. I spotted one wrong connection that I am glad I caught before needing to troubleshoot -- use each connection as an opportunity to verify the previous ones. 73 Curt

Hi Phil,
This one doesn’t appear to have a QRP class, only low power. Is that correct? TIA cu es 72, Bart W0IIT Pittsburg, KS 4Sqrp=#72, FP=#11, ARS=#568, SKCC=1139, NAQCC=#588 FIST=#5819, Zombie=#500, Geratol=#1000

Work the WAE DX Contest next weekend!
Phil Anderson
Hey All,
The Work All Europe (CW) DX Contest is this coming weekend on SAT and SUN. You could work 4 six hour segments. Here's a change to pile up some countries QSL wise. Look at the following for contest details: http://www.hornucopia.com/contestcal/weeklycont.php The Deutscher Amateur Radio Club (DARC) invites radio amateurs world wide to participate in the annual WAE DX Contest. It's a fun one and logs are submitted via the Cabrillo style. Uncle Phil. W0XI PS: The SSB WAE is on another month, I think September.

Another Wonderful exciting and informative Banner... all but page 13... that one single page.. took the wind right outta me. Not that a retirement isn't a good thing.. it is.. but what is saddening.. is that no one stepped up yet. Please? Someone? I'm just simply too far away.. and not practiced at publishing at all.. Plumbing I can do... water runs down hill... Publishing someone else needs to do.. words aren't supposed to run down. Good edition Walter.. very nice.. I've enjoyed the Banner very much. Thank you, and if you get a chance to drift through Cheyenne, do call ahead... or on a radio. Have a great day, --... ...-- Dale - WC7S in Wy To: 4sqrp@... From: 4sqrp@...
