Re: Thursday Morning Net [1 Attachment]
John Stevens (K5JS)
Hey Terry! Took a shot at the net this morning from BTR. Nuthin'. Well, nearly. Heard a weak station or two but I never caught a call. I did hear "cyclone" perhaps that was you. :-) A few minutes later I heard KV6Z in Claremore. We exchanged 449s. QSB made it difficult with his signal just above noise. Heard NE5DL right after on his vertical (from QRZ page) at 549 or so. My 90' wire inverted L at 35' doesn't tune well, so I'm going to have to do some antenna matching improvements this weekend. Even the L-Network tuner does poorly. Vertical section is about 30'. My matching transformer has broken wires for me to fix. Hope that does it along with wire radials under the vertical part of the wire. Supposed to be down to 25F here tonight, but that's just a nice spring day for you guys. :-)

Nice net this morning, six checking including a first timer, thank
you Barry. I was using my Cyclone and it seemed to hold up well on
this end. Everyone was cool today, and the temp here was -2 at the
end of the net.
Thanks to all who made it, and those who tried. 72 WA0ITP

Hi Wayne, I tried to check in at 7:30 but only heard W5XE and one other very faint station. Up until 7:36 there was other station on QSO on 7.122. Do I get partial credit? LOL 72/73 John NS5Z Sent from my iPhone

Re: WX & Other thoughts...
Jerry Haigwood <jerry@...>
Hi Dan,
I have looked at Farhan's Minima
transceiver. As is, I doubt if the transceiver will put out more than a
few microwatts. If you look at the design, the transmitter has only 1/2 of
a bidirectional amp using a 2N2222 as an output before going through the crystal
filter. Crystal filters cannot handle more than about -10 dbm before being
overdriven and subject to failure. I asked Farhan about the amount of
drive going through the crystal filter and he stated it was about 200mV in and
about 50 mV out. He didn't state if that was RMS, Peak or
Peak-to-Peak. If we give him the benefit of the doubt and call it RMS,
then coming out of the crystal filter is 50 microwatts (assumes a 50 ohm
load). After the crystal filter, the only active device is the
mixer. Something is amiss here. I suspect Farhan meant to say that
he can get 1 watt out of the JBOT amp with the Minima driving it. To get
up to 5 watts, another stage of amplification will be needed. You will
also need a low pass filter after the JBOT amp.

WX & Other thoughts...
Been cold in beautiful central IL. I just looked and we're having a heat wave - 13 F! We still have snow on the ground. Sure has been a weird winter. I don't remember this much snow since I was a kid. We have a lake in Decatur and as a kid I remember people used to drive on it in the winter. Recent years that wouldn't work so well.
Has anyone heard about Farhan's new transceiver design? (Farhan developed the marvelous BITX transceiver) It's called the Minima - http://www.phonestack.com/farhan/minima.html It uses an Arduino for some general functions, and to drive an Si570. He uses the KISS mixer and drives it straight from the bandpass filters with no RF amp. CW/SSB and all HF. Real unusual tuning control. Instead of a encoder he uses a 100K pot. From the 'center' you tun the pot left to go down in frequency and right to go up in frequency but like a jog/shuttle knob on a VCR the further you turn from center the faster the frequency moves. A little unusual but should work. As-is the XCVR puts out 1 watt but Farhan also has a nice amp called the JBOT (just a bunch of transistors) that can up it a bit. All open source like. After I get my G-59 going I plan to try to build one. Only expensive part is the Si570. I see Si no longer allows you samples! :-) 73 Dan - KB9JLO <><

FOX: N8SS and WC7S 80M Fox Thurs
Dale Putnam
WC7S 80m Fox I am the other FOX Thurs evening. Located in Cheyenne, Wy. and using a promising new designed antenna, (at least new to me, and having spent the last 3 months modeling it nearly every day)... I'll call it a "BowTie". It is at 50 ft on a tower. With it under test... and props the way they look to be... maybe we can give it a good wringing out.. on 80m coast to coast and border to border. The Wx forecast is for snow... so we'll get to see how it does in snow static too. I'll be running 5 w from a K2, working split until the rush is over.. then I'll start checking on my tx freq. To start with, please spread out.. I have a vfo and I know how to use the knob... (grin)... the freq offset is only one part of the equation to be heard.. the other part of it is timing. I may do the list thing.. listen a bit longer.. make a list, then call the listed stations, one after another... giving my information only once...then listening after each call for the exchange from you, after calling your call. IF I can get that going, it should be more efficient for us, saving time and allowing more pelts. The other improvement, on this end... will be a different way of handling the rst reports. Tues evening, I tried to give honest assessment reports... with a properly calibrated S meter. I found that very difficult to obtain, and keep the flow going well.. so watch for a change there. Might be that I learn how to do it the right way, and still provide honest reports. Good LUck to each of you, hope to see you all in my log after Thurs nite hunt, at 0200z between the trees marked 3550 and 3570 in the 80 acre wood. It's the fastest 90 minutes in radio. Have a great day, --... ...-- Dale - WC7S in Wy N8SS 80M Fox
I am one of the foxii for Thursday night.
I am located in Detroit. From here there is no meters like 80 meters so I expect to have coast to coast propagation during the hunt period. Its 5 watts to a dipole at 90 feet. I am sure I will start out working split and listening up but will change to simplex as soon as the pile gets whittled down. CU in the log Thursday night. RST MI Earl 5W
