That’s a nice site, Johnny.  I’d likely join you there.  Can we get permission to stay overnight and set up tents and campers?

I have set up at a park local to me, Lewis & Young Park in Louisburg KS but I do need to get permission from the city to stay the weekend.  It is also a nice site on flat ground with lots of good trees.  I have a new 30 Ah LiFePO4 battery that would last a good long time at either site!

Bert, Terry and myself used to do field day at Weston Bend State Park, just across the river in MO.
Nice tall trees, clean camp sites, quiet area.

We spent as much time eating and visiting as working field day!

Just a thought?

Don't forget the December Second Sunday Sprint is coming up tomorrow night (7:00-9:00 Sunday night central time).  Please tabulate your score by Tuesday night at the latest.  I will try to remember to come up with the December winner as well as the 2018 overall winner by Wednesday morning.  As always, when the new year comes, everyone's score magically reverts to 0 and we will start all over again with the 2019 SSS.

It’s a state park, so you can rent camp sites.
We usually reserved at least 2 side by side so we could string wires across both.
Tents and campers are welcome.

Gerry, on FD Saturday, I travel about 60 miles to a Club FD Site and operate. It is QRO, and I get my yearly SSB Fix. On Sunday, I operate QRP CW from my yard. I only have QRP CW on HF. I have heard rumors on any QRP guy in the next County :O

G5RV Antenna

George H. Gates

If you are using a G5RV what are you using for the balun? Not interested in any ones opinion wether ant is good or not. just comment on balun. Tnx Geo/W2BPI

Re: G5RV Antenna

George,
I did have a G5RV and it was fed with coax no balun. When the wind broke the 450 ohm window line I spliced on a hunk of window line and used a 4-1 balun.

I had a home brewed G5RV some years ago.  I used a LDG 4:1 balun to match the  450 Ohm ladder-line. It seemed to work as well as any other G5RV I have experienced.

No balun on mine. Goes directly to coax which goes to the tuner. It works well with minimal RF in the shack. It's been my primary antenna for more than ten years.

I’ve used the G5RV for years.  No balun and followed the original p,an by adjusting the ladderline to coax connection for the lowest SWR on 20 WITHOUT the tuner.

My 2 cents worth

Re: G5RV Antenna

Frank Perkins

Twenty years ago, my G5RV came with a balun.
Dipole with coil in each leg, a length of window line from the center feedpoint, then a balun with SO239 to connect with 50ohm coax to shack.
Worked great with ends about 38 ft, and middle sagged to about 35 ft.
I fed it with about 50ft of RG-8 coax running along the ground to the balun dangling about 2 ft up from the ground.
If yours didn't come with a 4 to 1 balun, buy or make one.

George-

I use a homebrewed dual-core (Guanella) balun. It's in a 4x4" weatherproof ABS enclosure mounted just outside my shack window.

I use 21' of coax wrapped so its inside diameter is 6" with coax feed on one end and straight to 450 Ohm Ladder Line.
Been using this for years and I have little to no trouble tuning the beast. Works QRP or QRO.
My 2 cents.

Re: G5RV Antenna

I use a MFJ 1:1 isolator balun on my G5RV.  The 1:1 connects to the 450 ohm on the downlead and my coax connects to the 1:1.

Is it good or bad ???  I don't know, but I do know I have a QSL card from South Africa for a contact I made using the G5RV with the 1:1 and using my Yaesu FT-817.  And by the way, it was a SSB Phone contact !!!

One other note, I am using 100 feet of LMR400 from the shack out to the 1:1 isolator.  And I do use a tuner, a MFJ-971.  The tuner has meters on it, but I have an Oak Hills Research WM-2 QRP wattmeter between the radio and the tuner so I can see what the reflected power is mush better than I can with the MFJ included meters.

oldie but a goldie Tenna dipper

Just finished my tenna dipper kit from long ago. Its a souped up version with a multi turn 10k, I want to fit in a freq counter but I don't think I can fit any more into it!

Also used a micro rotary for the band switching.

Just thought I would share.
