BJ build - TX Xtal doesn't swing

Raimund Reh

hi folks
got my BJ ready yesterday, but both delivered xtal doesn't swing in this circuit.
xtal is rather ok according to xtal tester.
All parts are all right and in place.
Just for fun I put a 80m xtal in - it works!
I raise C28 to 0.005uF without success.
So I need your kind support.
Thank's alot & cheers - Ray, DL1EGR

Do you mean not oscillate?

both 40m xtal which came along with this does not oscillate in this circuit but in xtal tester.

Sounds like a problem with the circuit and not the crystals

Check tank capacitor. I had wrong value and mine wouldn't oscillate

I'm pretty sure that IRF-510 transistors that are marked ""Y64K AP" work reasonably well at Q4, but those marked "618 P 77 WS" would kill the oscillator."

So my IRF-510 is(!) marked "618 P 77 WS" - I cut him out and Q4 oscillates. Wow!
Unfortunately I haven't an subst. IRF-510 e.g. Mouser #844-IRF510PBF factory marked "N77K BJ") on hand.
so how?

Thank you all for kind assistance
cheers - Ray

Guys,

This is just another instance of the wrong part (either in the kit or from your junque box).  I know it takes longer but with the low cost of those Chinese part testers I am now testing each part before installing.  Also it slows me down enough to rethink each part (why and what for) as I install it.

It is surprising how reading the same instructions over and over again, and on different days, how much the meaning changes.  Maybe is is just my old brain but going slow makes for a better build.

Hi Dave -no it's not your brain...
and I did it my way... not like Franky but take a look at the fotos I add...
I also think we are not alone with this expereance of none oscillating Q4 and we wonder why none is asking...
... cheers to you all guys - Ray

Send an email to the person that kitted the BJ. They will send you a replacement. Email address is on the website.

It has been brought up in the group in the last week or so.

I am sure some of us like me just assumed we blew it and replaced it on our own. They are not expensive and in my case I could get them much faster locally.

You are definitely not alone on no crystal osc. I found after many hours of work, that the bias of the oscillator of
is very important.  It needs to be at least 3.00 volts. Check my report in the database.
Good luck & 72

Retired Doc

Ray,

What is the type of transistor tester that you are using?  I have an old M3 Tester but it does not indicate capacitance.  That is really cool!  I had a 77WS  IRF-510 and when I replaced with another I got output.

Best Regard,

Kent KC9LIF

Raimund Reh

@Kent
I took this chinese transistortester LCR-T4 Transistor Diode tester - you'll find several offers on the bay.

@ folks in the group
got IRF-510 from MOUSER - none of the 20pcs batch has the announced 180pF acc. datasheet but less 400pF. please refer to the pics I added.
5wtts out should be good4fun - shouldn't?

so cheers for 4nw - Ray
