I'm not sure of a consensus but I found a small fan for $5 at Walmart that runs on 5 volts. I use a 120 to 5 volt wall wart or my computer ubus. It is quiet and works well Dr. Don W4BWS

I often use little computer fans that run on 12v. Just enough to move the smoke away. The tiny chip coolers are best and can run on lower voltages to be less noisy and still effective.

What I use is the Weller WSA350 benchtop smoke absorber, about a hundred dollars at Techni-Tool. It plugs into a 110V outlet and fits easily on the workbench. It draws the smoke into a replaceable activated charcoal filter.

A muffin fan and a charcoal car filter cut to size is cheaper? John VE3IPS Ham Radio is a lifestyle not a Hobby! Take the radio outside and operate from the Field Throw a wire in a tree and make a QSO

I just breathe deeply. It’s as good as Valium. Happy Ham Husband = more time to do shopping and yak on the phone.

I have been using the Bench-Top ESD Safe Smoke Absorber (Item #BK486) by Circuit Specialists, Inc. for many years. It comes with two filters. 73, Ed - ad7gr
I am looking to get a solder fume extractor. Is there a consensus on the best one to use for occasional work on kits?

I made very similar one from a 4" muffin fan, and 4" plastic dryer ducting. Fan is on the floor and flexible end can be placed near work area. You could easily attach a charcoal filter if you want, but I figure that the harmful smoke has largely settled out by the time it exits the fan, which is 4' away from me. --

With a longer duct tube this can be used for gathering within 70cm and let the fan blow out the chance of any virus out to 10m John VE3IPS Ham Radio is a lifestyle not a Hobby! Take the radio outside and operate from the Field Throw a wire in a tree and make a QSO

Ventilating bad stuff outside is always better then stirring it up, or recycling through a filter.

10m is kind dead these days so if we push it out there we shouldnt have an issue. John VE3IPS Ham Radio is a lifestyle not a Hobby! Take the radio outside and operate from the Field Throw a wire in a tree and make a QSO

I have one I picked up at a stain glass store..pretty much a muffin fan that draws the air away and forces it through a spongey filter material. I also have a muffin fan attached to a flexible dryer vent hose and I set it the exhaust near a basement window. A good filter is next best and at least getting it away from breathing it in directly is better than nothing. -- 72/73, Dan NM3A
