Ozarkcon 2021

Johnny AC0BQ

Good Evening Group

Well I was hoping that I would not have to make this announcement, but due
to the continued spread of Covid and the delays that have been encountered getting the vaccinations
rolled out, we have decided to Cancel the in Person Ozarkcon for 2021,
that would have been in Branson, Mo.

But, as an old saying goes, when you get handed Lemons, make Lemonade?

Well this is not exactly Lemonade but something a whole lot better!

We're planning to host a Virtual Ozarkcon via one of the social media platforms and disturbed via the World wide Web.
It will be very similar in format to the in person Ozarkcon
except we will be able to view it from the safety of our homes.

The Virtual Ozarkcon is planned for the Second weekend of April, on Saturday the 10th of April. We moved it forward a week since Easter weekend is the 3rd and 4th.

We're working on the details and more details will be posted as soon as they are available.

We will have a great lineup of speakers with a wide variety of Qrp presentations for you to enjoy.
We plan to have a Wackey Key contest, with Video clips to be submitted online, as well as
the long standing and very popular Home Brew contest.

We have decided to hold off on the Buildathon this year since we can't be in the same room together.
Who doesn't enjoy the smell of Melted solder and burning rosin?

We haven't decided if we will have the K0N ops on the air but we will let you know.

Anyway, that's all I have for now.
So stay tuned for updates as they are available.

Stay healthy and I will see you all at the 2021 Virtual Ozarkcon.

Thanks Johnny!  That’s a big relief for us old folks in our 80’s.  Really looking forward to the virtual Ozarkcon 2021.

P.s.  nice to work you on the Jan SSS.  You and a K3Y/4 was about all I could manage.  Band was so noisy.  I could see the 4s signals buried in the noise on the IC7300 but just couldn’t pull them out of the mud on 80 mtrs.

Maybe this will be the last time Ozarkcon has to be cancelled.  Hope so anyway.  Got my shot (vaccine) today, next on on 9 Feb 2021.

Meanwhile -

FYI.  This is a super good event and well worth the $10 early registration.  I attended the previous virtual hamfest. Enjoyed it even more than Xenia.  Missed the feeling/touching new items but learned a lot from presenters.  Take a read. Enjoy a 'virtual' hamfest from the comfort of your shack.

The first QSO Today Expo was a great success with over 16,000 attendees and the March 13-14, 2021 event is anticipated to be even larger. The QSO Expo team has been working hard to make this upcoming Expo even better with new speakers, panel discussions, kit building workshops, and much more.

Anyone can attend from their home or office.

Early Bird Tickets are just $10 (to help cover the cost of this event, $12.50 at the "door") and include entry for the Live 2 day period as well as the 30-day on-demand period). Registration can be found at www.qsotodayhamexpo.com.

The ARRL, the national association for Amateur Radio® in the United States, is a QSO Today Virtual Ham Expo Partner.

At the Expo, amateur radio operators will be able to:
  • Learn from a packed line-up of 60+ renowned ham radio speakers such as Bob Allphin, K4UEE, on “My Favorite DXpeditions to DXCC Top 10 Most Wanted”; Michael Foerster, W0IH, on “Using the Arduino In Your Shack”; and Ron Jones, K7RJ, on “3D Printer Basics”.
  • Take part in Live virtual kit building workshops. Kits will be available for purchase and delivered to you in time for the Expo so you can participate and build from the convenience of your home.
  • Walk through the virtual exhibit hall filled with popular amateur radio suppliers. Watch live product demos of the latest equipment. New video technology will be used to provide a better experience for attendees to engage with exhibitors.
  • Outside of our virtual auditorium is a virtual lounge with tables and chairs for live video chats to allow a “hallway meetup” experience.
  • Prior to the Expo, take advantage of our new speaker calendar technology to download speaker times in your local time zones to your Google or Outlook calendar. You’ll then have a complete schedule of the sessions you want to join.

If you’ve never been to an in-person Hamfest or Expo, you can participate from the convenience of your home or office without spending a dime on travel! This platform simulates a full convention experience with an exhibit hall and exhibit booths staffed by live attendants, speaker auditorium with live Q&A, and now our video lounge.

And remember that you can return over the 30 days after the QSO Today Expo to listen to speakers you missed during the Live period, explore, and re-engage exhibitor offerings.

Flexradio is the Expo’s Platinum Sponsor and Gold sponsors as of this time include Elecraft, RFinder, and Connect Systems.

Go to https://www.qsotodayhamexpo.com/ now to learn more and get registered!

We look forward to having you join us at Expo for an amazing and engaging experience.

Johnny,

Sorry you have to cancel but maybe I will be able to attend for the first time.  Ozarkon has been on my bucket list for years but can’t do that and Dayton/FDIM both.  I will be very happy to pay whatever fees necessary to attend this year.  I am looking for incense that smells like solder to have going in the background to use during the videos (like even the smell of popcorn enhances the experience of watching a movie on TV).

I received the Black Widow key kit yesterday.  Thanks for leaving it in the original mailing envelope.  I am sure that enhanced the value of it.  My wife saw it all and asked how much...... and then asked how many CW keys I needed...... both very touchy questions to an old ham.  I was kind and didn’t ask her about how many cookbooks (that she doesn’t use) and other items that have collected in our home for 47 years...... she almost laughed when she asked the question though.  Good mood and a good day for ham radio.

I’m glad you liked the key, it is a nice memory from the past.

I sat beside Jerry at Ozarkcon during a build a thon several years ago, he was a character!

I know what you mean about the keys and or the cost when it comes to the XYL. Mine has sort of made peace with it. She knows that these “new” Toys come and go from time to time.

We will have a real Ozarkcon again soon I hope. I think the group is wanting to get together in person and

Hello Mike
Yes!
I would appreciate you help very much.
I am a ver inexperienced Zoom user.
I’m assuming we will use zoom
For Webinar and will need to buy a user license.
The club will take care of this, Ron our treasurer has some Money.

I have been looking at the GQRP model from last year.

I’m lining up speakers and will ask them to “record” their presentations.

Do I need to have them do any thing
Other than that?

Thank you very much Mike
I’m sure we will visit more in the near future!

I will mark that date on my calendar and will try to "attend".  I've wanted to attend one of these in person, but have found it difficult to get away that long, as I am caregiver for my wife of 55 years.  So sorry the in-person event had to be cancelled again, but it is probably best for all of us.  Jane and I have nearly completed the on-line course in learning to be hermits! Since March 1 she has only left the house for necessary medical appointments.  I make fast trips through a grocery store with a list arranged in the order of the store's layout; I try to minimize my exposure so I don't bring any bad cooties home to Jane, who is so susceptible to disease (and allergic to flu shots). A virtual event would be perfect, especially being able to plan for the date this far in advance.
Canton OH Chapter 21, QCWA, has been having weekly informal gatherings via ZOOM; they are a great wAy to get together.  We have a number of members join in who cannot normally attend due to distance.
After many years, Jane got her license (KC8IEE). She understands the need for an occasional key, etc.. I try to reciprocate by honoring her desire for a new crockpot or toaster oven, etc., occasionally.  This has worked for us for 55+ years!
I am looking forward to seeing you on April 10!

Hi guys, sorry I haven't responded in a while but I've been pretty busy here.

I saw the announcement about having three judges choosing the winner of the wacky key contest. I was thinking for the homebrew contest it would be neat if we could set up a website with the pictures or videos of the different projects, and then have people vote for their favorites on that webpage. However, I have very little website or HTML programming ability so I wouldn't be able to set it up. Nor would I have an idea how to prevent fraudulent voting. So perhaps it might be a better idea to use the three judge method for the homebrew contest as well. After the contest is over and winners selected, then perhaps we could showcase all the different projects on a webpage, like on the Ozarkcon or 4SQRP website.

Just throwing around ideas here, nothing's set in stone.

this is a fantastic idea to use technology to gather us together.  I watched many of the recorded GQRP presentations - they were indeed presented live -- and a moderator (they may have used a different one for each presentation) took questions at the end - they spent a lot of time with dialog.

if you make it too fancy it may fail -  so go simple with the approach.  something like zoom allows everyone but the presenter to be muted (great idea!) and then use the chat window to take questions.  if audience is well-behaved then consider unmuting everyone after the presentation.

somehow offering an open house to let folk interact is a nice touch, but format needs some thought.

while you all will miss being in Branson live -- its a long trip from the east or west coast.

Well when we went to Atlanticon they charged admission but handed or shipped everyone a club kit, taking place of a group build. Instead of shipping door prizes, if the usual merchants offered a modest discount code to attendees they might get a lot of business.  just wild ideas,  think practical.
